In Murder on the Bucket List, something is in the air. The ladies of the Summer Ridge Bridge Club are close and enjoy living life together. The women are all in their seventies but still at young at heart, so they get together secretly one night in July to have an adventure. The Bridge Club wants to check skinny dipping off of their bucket list, and they have vowed to do it together.
The main characters of this novel are the two friends, Charlotte and Francine. While they are looking forward to going skinny dipping in the pool at their friend Alice’s home, the other members of their club seem like they are more worried about their bodies and how they look and staying busy during faux preparations than actually jumping in the pool and doing the deed. So when some of the women say that there is a strange odor coming from the pool, it seems like another proffered excuse to procrastinate on going skinny dipping.
But as it turns out, the smell in the pool area is not another excuse. It’s real, and Mary Ruth (who works as a caterer) thinks it is coming from the pool shed. They open the door and sure enough, a dead body falls out. Someone has been murdered and stuffed in the pool shed. For Bridge Club member Charlotte, this is way more interesting than a group of older women getting into a pool for a minute or two. It just so happens that her first item on her bucket list was not skinny dipping but was to have the chance to solve a murder.
It may be unfortunate, but Charlotte is thrilled and it seems like a prayer for adventure has been answered. It’s just too bad that someone has to die in order for her to get the chance! She pulls in her friend Francine to help her as she sets out to solve this case. Together they must figure out who has conducted the murder before it is too late. They negotiate the crime scene and unfortunately have to deal with the press’s coverage of their Bridge Club’s skinny-dipping outing that ended with a dead man falling out of a shed.
Now they have to contend with a number of situations that keep popping up. Between an angry home owner’s association and a horribly disastrous appearance on the television show Good Morning America, and media offers being extended to the two ladies left and right by a publicist who wants to represent them, as well as their fame-hungry friend Joy wanting to get her name in the papers, Francine and Charlotte quickly feel that they are in over their head. And of course, there is the killer out there to contend with.
This lively murder mystery story was called a wonderful light read by author Clare O’Donohue. Will the ladies find the murderer, or will they turn up with nothing for their troubles? Will Charlotte and Francine get the job done and put a horrible act and the person responsible to justice? You’ll have to read it to find out.
In the meantime, you can check out the sequel to Murder on the Bucket List, Murder Under the Covered Bridge. In this book, the ladies of the Bridge Club are back. These older ladies are determined to bare it all in the attempt to help Charlotte cross another thing that she has on her bucket list off for good. It’s going to be a pinup calendar shoot, and since the ladies are going to be taping a television spot to promote the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival.
The ladies decide that it might be a good idea to use their access to the Roseville Bridge to try and help Charlotte get her task of being a sexy calendar girl done for the day. It’s all going well for their calendar shoot on the bridge, but just when they are getting started, the shoot is broken up by gunshots. Not only that, the ladies see William stumbling down a riverbank and he is followed by a man holding a gun.
William is Francine’s cousin, and he seems really hurt. In the end, the injuries that he sustains were actually life-threatening. Is it a case of attempted murder, or is it something else? With the calendar photo shoot put aside, Francine and Charlotte have the chance to solve a mystery once more.
The two go into detective mode and decide to work together to try and uncover what William knew about the shooter following him since he can’t tell them himself. But just like the first time, Francine and Charlotte must go through a variety of trials, including two different instances of arson, a seance, nursing home residents with memory issues, a killer, and even a shortage on Mary Ruth’s corn fritter donuts.
Check out this exciting mystery thriller from Elizabeth Perona and see whether the truth can be uncovered and if the photo shoot can continue after all! Murder on the Covered Bridge is a great read. Be sure to check out the third book in the series, Murder at the Male Revue.
