Emily Rodda is the pseudonym of Jennifer Rowe who writes children’s fiction, young adult fantasy, and general fantasy fiction novels.

The author grew up on the North Shore of Sydney and went to the University of Sydney from where she graduated with an English Literature master’s degree in 1973.

Growing up, she was quite the reader and hence it was not surprising that she gravitated towards publishing. She started out working for Angus & Robertson as an editor before she finally became a publisher. She would, later on, become Australian Women’s Weekly’s editor-in-chief.

“Something Special” which was her debut novel came out in 1984 and has a very interesting origin story. Rodda began writing it as a bedtime story for her kid but expanded it since the child loved it so much. Since then, she has gone on to write more than 100 children’s fiction works that range from novels to picture books.

Writing as Jennifer Rowe, she is the creator of several storylines and characters for Murder Call the TV series. For her work, she was the winner of the Australia Book of the Year by the Children’s Book Council, which she has won half a dozen times.

She has also won the Aurealis fantasy award and several Children’s Choice awards.

As a child, throughout her teenage years and twenties, Emily Rodda was known as a huge lover of writing and reading stories. At school, she always loved English and when she got home, she often wrote plays that her siblings would then act out.

As she grew older, her confidence started to wane and she stopped writing. But once Rodda got married and had children of her own, she started telling them stories and it all came back to her.

She composed a few stories and found that her children and several of her friends liked them. She then started writing once again as a hobby until she published her debut work “The Pigs are Flying” in 1986.

Publishing the novel gave her back the confidence she needed and she published several more novels that became very successful. She would turn professional in 1994 and she has said she is lucky to have a career that she loves.

Emily is passionate about children’s fiction as she believes that it is only by reading that children can develop stamina. As such, she writes novels with entertaining and fast-moving plots to grip her readers’ attention, so that they can develop a love for reading.

Emily Rodda won the Dromkeen Medal in 1995. According to the judges, she deserved the award for her work promoting children’s fiction and her prolific writing schedule.

The author has continued to spend a lot of time sharing her love of storytelling with educators and with children. In 2019, the University of Western Sydney granted Rodda an honorary doctorate degree.

In the same year, she was recognized for her services to elevate Australian literature when she was made a Companion of the Order of Australia.

Emily now makes her home in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, where she lives with her husband and Sadie their naughty Labrador. As for what she does when she is not writing, she has said that she loves to read.

When she is in the dumps, you can often find her reading up to three books a week.

“The Forests of Silence” by Emily Rodda opens with the death of Prince Endon’s parents which means that he is proclaimed king. To consummate his ascension to the throne, he is given the Belt of Deltora, a magical steel belt that is set around his waist.

The Belt is what certifies that he is the rightful king of Deltora. Jarred his friend discovers that an evil Shadow Lord who lives in the Shadowlands was and remains a huge threat to the land.

When he had attacked the land eons ago, the Shadow Army had devastated the land that had then been divided into seven tribes. Jarred is informed that Adin the blacksmith had scoured the land and found seven talismans that could improve their chances of beating back their attackers.
Using the power of the gems, Prince Endon’s father was able to drive the enemy back into the Shadowlands. Adin had gone on to rule the land but the Enemy while vanquished had not been destroyed.

He kept his powerful belt with the talismans on his waist but over time, it started losing its power.

Emily Rodda’s novel “The Lake of Tears” starts from right where the debut left off.

In this outing, Jasmine, Barda and Lief are heading to the Lake of Tears in search of the next gemstone to add power to the Deltora Belt. But it is not an easy quest as they will have to beat Thaegan the sorceress who stands in their way.

They already found the golden Topaz but the only way the belt will become strong enough will be if they locate as many stones as they can. The evil Shadow Lord has amassed a lot of power over the years and is not so easy to beat with a weakened belt.

To find the next stone, Jasmine, Barda, and Lief have to travel to the lands of one of the most powerful sorceress in the realm. Once they overcome Thaegan the monster sorceress, they will also have to confront the hideous guardian keeping watch over the magical Lake of Tears.

But they are people with a lot of willpower and they are not going to give up no matter what.

“City of the Rats” by Emily Rodda opens with Jasmine, Barda, and Lief having to head to the City of Rats for their latest mission to find some powerful gems they need. The three companions are united in their hatred for the Shadowy evil Lord and the quest to find the gems for the Belt of Deltora.

It is only when they can locate all the gems and made the Belt complete that they can be powerful enough to overthrow the evil Shadow Lord.

They have so far succeeded in locating the great ruby and the golden topaz. These have strengthened them, provided much-needed magical power, and given them the courage they sorely needed in their search for the remaining stones.

But the Forbidden City of the Rats has horrors none of them ever envisaged.
