Emma Lee Jayne is an American author of romance novels. She writes fast-paced stories with many swoon heroes, snarky heroines, and detailed world-building. Jayne lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband and their two children, where they keep chickens, dogs, cats, and Legos.
Heart Smart
This is the first book in Work for it, a series Emma Lee Jayne contributed. We meet Holly, who has been assigned a task to get the very ill-tempered but genius professor to tidy up for an award he’s been shortlisted for. But Molly has her work cut out since the professor is not interested in talking to people or tidying up. He prefers staying in his lab and working with the few students who can tolerate running around him. This story is quite exciting, and you’ll love how the heroine comes out as being lovable.
The professor (Max) is a vagrant, and Molly tries out her best to get him sorted. But the thing professor does notice is that the woman tidying him up is very charming, and that annoys him. Sparks fly when Molly steals something from his lab to get his attention.
Jayne does a fantastic job of bringing two unlikely characters together, making way for some of the best romances you’ve ever read. This novel is equal parts hate-to-love romance, workplace romance, and opposite-attract romance.
The story feels much a lot like the reverse of My Fair Lady, a 1964 American musical comedy-drama film. How do you take an ill-tempered but brilliant researcher/professor and turn him into to be a man worthy of a prestigious award? Well, bring in an expert in the communication field, an associate at the university where the professor works. When the two meet, it’s fireworks instantly, both as the professor resists any advances but the focused communication expert. The two soon realize that they feel a spark of attraction between them. This sparks a battle of wits that lasts for much of the story and creates sparks that will keep you hooked deeply into Max and Holly’s journey.
Here are some of the reasons that will make you love Emma Lee Jayne’s story:
When a difficult-to-deal-with hero begins to show his humane side, that sparks the reader’s emotion, and that’s the case with Max in this story. However, it takes much of the story for Max’s kindness to be revealed, but as soon as it happens, it’ll make you feel at ease for Jayne’s characters. But even with his humane side revealed, Max retains his solid outer walls but soon finds out it’s more of a “make-up” rather than his inability to be nice.
What the author lays out in her story, the challenges of a non-tenured professor, being part are all true, and any reader will easily relate to these challenges. The frequent push and pull of the hero and heroine play a perfect foreplay role for their later coupling. This is a slow-burn romance and fits perfectly for Max and Holly’s tale.
At Max’s expense, there are some light moments of laughter, which helps allow for some moments of relief from the detailed Max characterization. The author provides a nice balance between strife and resolution as the narrative progresses.
One of this book’s central themes is the achievement gap and food insufficiency for the students. The author does not preach it but vividly illustrates it through Holly’s experiences at the university. What Emma Jayne showcases in this slow-burn romance is true to the theme and offers a personal resolution to the problems.
But Holly’s heart is the best part of Heart Smart, hence the novel’s title. Through her compassion for people and animals that society often considers broken, the reader is reminded that we all are part of ecology created in perfect balance. As Holly loves her ill-tempered Max and her pets, we can visualize the power of “seeing” people beyond their physical appearances. And that’s a compelling message, especially in a world focused on the outer impression.
Smart Mouth
Tom found himself as a teenage pop star at the age of 15. He feels that his induction into the Boys of Summer band contributed to the breakup of his family and the bad relations with his twin brother, James. On the other hand, Gwendolyn was James’s best friend in high school. When Gwen and Tom first meet, they are both infatuated, but James isn’t willing to share.
In a series of unfortunate events, Tom and Gwen reconnect, and Tom won’t risk the chance of having her in his life again. Tom is a cautious celebrity who understands that his fame has both advantages and disadvantages. He has found a much more comfortable position behind the scenes as the manager of a recording studio. We first meet Gwen Heart Smart- in the story of Max and Holly, where she worked as Max’s assistant. She is an intelligent woman, but unfortunately, social gathering often leaves her perplexed. As she awaits to defend her Ph.D. dissertation, she firmly believes it would be wise to try dating. However, she never expected Tom to be in love with her. Overall she is complicated but also an interesting character.
You will enjoy everything about Smart Mouth as the story addresses anxiety’s debilitating nature, focusing on women’s achievement in the world. But these themes never walk hand in hand in the story; instead, they are characterized by the two characters, Tom and Gwen.
Due to Tom’s anxiety and Gwen’s uncertainty in relationships, Gwen and Tom’s path is riddled with problems. As these two reconnect and Tom promises to assist Gwen in her dilemma of meeting men, a realm of misunderstanding and uncertainty ensues. What is evident, however, is their chemistry. Jayne choreographs this dance between the two, one desiring more while believing the other cannot desire the same. It is brilliantly orchestrated to capture Jayne’s readers’ interest. It is explosive when they finally connect sexually due to years of suppressed emotions. If you enjoy reading romance novels with swoon characters, then Emma Lee Jayne books are a perfect match for you.
