Eric Brown is a British author of fiction. He was born on May 24, 1960, in West Yorkshire, England. His work has been quite popular and sold well enough to be translated into over a dozen languages and counting. He is the author of several series, from the Virex to the Helix and Starship series and more!
He first began writing in 1975. Brown has lived in many places besides England as well, including Greece, India, and Australia. He was initially most influenced by the works of Robert Silverberg (a science fiction writer) and Agatha Christie (the famous murder mystery author). He has written over 45 books and nearly half as many short stories. Brown was also nominated for the British Science Fiction Award five times and ended up winning it in 2000 and 2002 for his stories.
While his first novel Meridian Days was released in 1992, one of Brown’s short stories made it to print long before that. Brown has also written several children’s books as well as books for young adults and adults; so he’s really covered the entire spectrum of reading groups as a writer!
In addition to writing books and stories, he also pens a regular review column for the Guardian that covers different science fiction media and books monthly. Writing is one of his favorite hobbies, but Brown also enjoys cooking food (especially Indian curries) and collecting books. He currently resides with his family, his beloved wife and daughter, in East Lothian.
He is the author of the popular Virex series. The series kicked off in 2000 with the publication of the debut novel in this fictional science fiction trilogy. It is titled New York Nights. The novel is set in the future in a place where the city is a city that contains only the lost.
New York Nights is the intriguing and futuristic first novel set in the Virex series of novels by Eric Brown. The setting for this debut story in the Virex series is in 2040 in New York. The city that used to be referred to as The Big Apple is now a place for the lost. They all live here.
Hal Halliday has a good job working as a junior detective specializing in missing persons, which keeps him busy in a city such as this. Even though there is plenty of reason to think that business would be good, it’s never enough to take Hal Halliday’s mind off of certain things. Like his sister, who was killed when she was a child years ago– burned alive, dying in the most horrible way possible. It haunts him to this day and not even the cases that he takes on could make him forget about it.
But now he may have the chance to get her back in some way, even if it is through VR. Hal never thought that he would get to experience her again in any fashion, that the memories that he had of her were all that was left. But VR is giving him the very real chance to bring his sister back to life, in a sense; even though she may not be really alive, the technology of the future may just be the thing that finally allows him to live in the past.
When a new missing persons case comes through to the detective agency, junior partner Halliday is assigned to follow up on any leads. But the further that he delves into this case, the more complicated it seems to get. Hal is going to have to survive this job, but working in a futuristic New York City is no joke. This case may end up affecting those he is closest to as he follows up on leads and gets closer to finding out the truth.
As the stakes grow higher, Hal must face the realities of working in a field such as his own. Will he be able to solve the case, or will he find that detective work truly has its drawbacks? Read New York Nights to find out!
New York Blues is the second novel in the Virex fictional trilogy by author Eric Brown. The reader meets up with the interesting character of Hal Halliday once more, the junior partner of a detective agency that specializes in finding people that have gone missing.
In the middle of the twenty-first century, New York City is as busy and populated as ever. But now, thanks to terrorist outbursts, it is a city that is also home to refugees. The majority of these people came to New York after the acts of terrorism rendered most of America a wasteland, brimming with radioactivity.
Hal runs a missing persons business in the middle of all this chaos. The grim situation sparks depression and dissatisfaction; many people in New York fill up the time with hours spent in virtual reality, putting more than they can count into a world of total escape. Hal himself has his own need to escape, mourning the loss of people that he has loved.
The appeal of the VR tech is something that made Sergio Mantoni fabulously rich. This millionaire magnate profited greatly from the VR tech’s popularity, but now he is starting to find the opposition against him and this technology mounting.
The resistance comes from VIREX, a guerilla group. The group has pledged to commit themselves to the singular goal of ending VR and the falsely promised world that it provides. So how does Hal figure into this?
When the detective takes a gig to find the missing sister of Vanessa Artois, a famous star of Holodrama, he is poised to be more involved in the world of VR than ever before– and all that comes with it. As VR and the guerilla group VIREX battle for supremacy, Hal Halliday might just find that he is more involved than ever.
Can Hal track down Vanessa’s missing sister, Canada? Will VIREX finally be able to take out the VR technology once and for all– one of the only outlets of escape for the suffering people of a broken America? You’re going to have to read this exciting novel that is part science-fiction and part fantasy by acclaimed writer Eric Brown in order to find out!
