Eric Hamilton Wilson is a Canadian published author of fiction. He is known for writing children’s books and being a local and international best selling author.

Eric was born in Ottawa, Canada on November 24, 1940.

Eric Wilson is a role model and hero to many Canadians and children around the world that have read and loved his books. He is said to have traditionally Canadian qualities, such as being unassuming, forthright, and honest. His mystery stories for kids have sold well and been very popular. He has had his books sell over a million copies in Canada and has sold at least a million globally, with the books being translated into at least ten languages. He has also had his books do very well in countries such as Japan and Spain.

Eric attended the University of British Columbia, graduating with his B.A. He has taught both elementary school and secondary school in British Columbia in White Rock. Teaching in public school ended up helping him get into writing. He was frustrated with some of his students that were slower learners not wanting to read books because they said that they were too boring. He decided to take on writing a story for himself to try and make them more interesting. While his students liked his short stories, publishers felt differently, rejecting the five manuscripts that he first sent out.

Eric developed his own formula that was largely based on the preferences of his students (then in eighth grade level). He would have his books be fairly short and they would open with a scene that was dramatic. The books would have a lot of dialogue and would be filled with different cliffhanger moments. The books are similar to the Hardy Boys as well as true mysteries like those written by Agatha Christie.

The author likes to have the stories be set in Canada and feature Canadian history in his stories. Eric frequently chooses to have relevant themes included in his stories, from child safety to drug abuse and environmental issues. These keep the stories up to date, topical, and also give teacher the opportunity to discuss various topics in class with students.

Eric is also particularly known for writing his Tom and Liz Austen series of fictional books. They’ve won him different recognition and awards, such as the Chairman’s Award from the Crime Writers of Canada and the Author of the Year Award from the Canadian Booksellers Association in 1993. He also received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, intended to recognize Wilson’s work promoting literacy. He was awarded the Arthur Ellis Award in 1990 from the Crime Writers of Canada for Lifetime Achievement.

Eric resides today in British Columbia in Victoria.

Eric Wilson is the creator and the author of the Tom and Liz Austen series of fictional novels. The series features Liz and Tom, who live in Canada and are young detectives. It was his first novel published and came out in 1976. The book is still in print to this day along with the many other novels that make up the series. They have been published in a variety of languages and now are available to a new generation. Parents and teachers frequently use the history and geography of Canada included in these books for teaching moments. The first book, Murder on The Canadian, was followed by Vancouver Nightmare and several more fictional followups for a complete and exciting series!
