Erica Monroe is a USA Today bestselling author from the United States that writes historical romance. Erica has a thing for dark historical fiction. Her love stories have plenty of doom, gloom, and death.

According to Erica, there’s no point in writing a romance novel if there aren’t serious stakes in play. For her efforts in the romance genre, Erica has been a recipient of the Daphne du Maurier Award.

+Biography

Erica Monroe comes from Maryland. She had a great childhood and I wasn’t just because she was so sheltered. The author had amazing parents who encouraged her desire to pursue a writing career.

It helped that the pair loved books almost as much as Erica. With a school librarian for a mother and a sci-fi fan for a father, Erica grew up immersed in the literature of a wide variety.

When Erica wasn’t absorbed in fantasy, she was reading science fiction and even dipping her toes into comic books.

At school, Erica’s teachers were just as supportive of her writing dreams. They saw her talent for what it was and quickly begun nurturing it. Knowing what she wanted to do so early in life pushed Erica to work even harder.

In College, Erica pursued a writing course. It was there that she explored British Literature and, in particular, Shakespeare. It is worth noting that while Erica knew she wanted to write for a living, she didn’t know which genre she intended to pursue.

Her minor in English and major in secretarial studies did little to point her in the right direction. Her career began to take shape when she was introduced to regency romance and it hooked her.

While she had experimented with science fiction and contemporary romance, reading Regency Romance showed Erica Monroe where her voice would be best suited. So she began crafting stories set in the Regency Era, tales with a darker tone, filled with prostitutes, thieves and all manner of scoundrels that eventually put her on the map.

Erica imputes a lot of the success she has achieved in the romance genre to the Romance Writers of America. Joining the group gave Erica access to a myriad of resources, this including other romance authors who guided her in her efforts to plant her flag in the historical romance sub-genre.

Not that Erica believes she wouldn’t have made it without the RWA. The author has described herself as being very passionate. Once she sets her sights on a task, she doesn’t stop pursuing it until she achieves her goal.

This can be seen in Erica Monroe’s decision to self-publish the Rookery Rogues. On the one hand, Erica didn’t think she could sell the Rookery Rogues series to a traditional publisher because of its content.

On the other hand, Erica is a control freak. The idea of people telling her what she can and cannot write, and what she should and shouldn’t censor didn’t appeal to her. The self-publishing route wasn’t easy but Erica pursued it because it gave her the control she desired.

It also helped that indie publishing makes for more flexible writing deadlines. Erica is chronically ill. Her autoimmune disorders can keep her down for quite a few days. So the author needs the flexibility the indie publishing field provides.

Erica is a chronic viewer of television. She spends more time watching television than anything else besides writing, and she elicits as much joy from talking about television as she does watching it.

Erica also reads regularly. Most of her research is done online where the author will pour over historical articles, documents, and novels in an effort to more accurately describe the historical settings in her books.

When it comes to leisurely reading, Erica is all about comic books and science fiction.

The author met her husband in high school. They were married a few years after that. He is often the source of the historical books that Erica Monroe uses to flesh out her historical romance novels.

Because Erica is so passionate about social issues and, in particular, women’s issues, her novels tend to reflect her strong personal opinions.

Erica is very active on social media. She loves to engage with her readers on those things she’s passionate about.

+A Dangerous Invitation

The rookeries are no place for a woman like Kate Morgan or at least that is what she used to think. But then her father died and all the privilege she had known went out the window.

The rookeries are dark and depraved and it takes all the strength Kate can muster to survive. Kate never thought her salvation would come in the form of Daniel O’Reilly.

He might be the first man she ever loved but Daniel broke Kate’s heart when he left her in the wake of an accusation of murder. And now she wants nothing to do with him.

But Daniel O’Reilly is nothing if not persistent. He lost everything one drunken night and now he’s determined to get it all back. First, Daniel must prove that he’s innocent of murder. Second, and most importantly, Daniel must show Kate that he’s changed.

The first historical romance novel from Erica Monroe finds its heroine, Kate Morgan, forced to forge a new life in the rookeries of London when her father’s company goes bankrupt.

With her lover being accused of the murder of a co-worker and fleeing, Kate is forced to fend for herself, surviving by fencing stolen goods. When Kate and Daniel are reunited, they must put their history aside if they are to bring a killer to justice.

+Beauty and the Rake

If there was one person who could have escaped the Whitechapel rookery, it was Abigail Vautille. But that was back when she was beautiful before one horrible night took her money and her looks.

Now, with her family at the edge of ruin, Abigail has no choice but to sell her body to a rogue for two weeks.

Inspector Michael Strickland has always had it easier than most. It wasn’t just his money that got him all the women he could possibly want but the good looks he brought to the table.

Strickland doesn’t know why but something about Abigail sets him ablaze. She thinks she’s hideous but he sees something beautiful in her. And when Abigail’s life is threatened by her past, there’s nothing Strickland won’t do to protect her.
