Esther Hatch is a historical fiction romance author. She was born and raised in rural Utah. After high school, she moved to Russia, where she taught children English, and also attended Brigham Young University to study for a degree in archaeology. Her writing journey began when one of her favorite writers invited her to a critique group, and she started writing her first novel a week after joining the group.
A Proper Scandal
A Proper Scandal is the first book in a series by the name authored by Esther Hatch. For Grace Sinclair, she has never wanted anyone to love her, only for her beauty and dowry. And so, she is forced to relocate from the town she spent her childhood and moves in to live with her uncle Bell. Her uncle gives her a creepy vibe right from the beginning, and it only worsens. This forces Grace into a dilemma, whether to live with her uncle, who wants to take advantage of her, or betray her morals and compromise someone into marriage.
The relationship between Grace and Nate is both unusual and adorable. Before getting to know Nate well, she asks him the funniest and most inappropriate questions. She has no idea how to attract a man into her life, which results in some of the most amusing conversations you’ve ever read.
A Proper Scandal story takes place in 1800’s England, and the author allows us to glimpse how the world operated in that era through her detailed and vivid descriptions. Grace is one of the few lucky women regarding finances and aesthetics, with the only things failing her being her common sense and trust.
Regardless, she is sweet, and despite being shuffled from one place to another, all she ever longs for is to belong to a family unit. On the other hand, Nate is such a gentleman. It’s easy to understand the reason why he doesn’t want anything to do with love. He’s been severely deceived and heartbroken; thus, it’s easier to understand why he’s protective of his heart. But he has a weak spot for Grace because she can crack the protective walls he has built around his heart.
Grace is unlike any other woman Nate has ever encountered in London. She’s an intelligent woman who speaks her mind and shows genuine interest in his railway project.
Besides the romance aspect of the novel, A Proper Scandal boasts a thoroughly captivating plot. There are plenty of twists throughout the story, which is a lovely surprise. And while this is an inspirational novel, though there isn’t Christian content, there is something the reader can learn.
We are able to learn that only the truth can set you free. Even though it appeared like the only option she had, the lies Grace formulated only ended up giving her and those she loved pain and heartbreak. As Christians, we need to trust in God even when lies seem like the only way out.
A Proper Charade
To prove to herself and her brother that she can think and work like others, Lady Patience Kendrick decides to work as a maid regardless of her lack of domestic skills. But soon, her employer Anthony requests her to help in a show to help him secure a bride, and Lady Patience accepts, knowing all well the enormous risk she poses to her reputation. She enters the social function wearing a disguise to avoid being recognized as the duke’s sister, while her employer is seriously puzzled by how well she blends in.
Once again, Esther Hatch does a fantastic job in creating a story with a cast of characters that are not only engaging but also experience personal turmoil despite being well off financially and materially. The protagonist, Patience, is a strong, free-spirited lady, well rounded and realistic character. The supporting cast, Anthony, is well-structured, caring, and kind. He gets flustered when he finds Patience working as a maid, but instead of firing her for her incompetence, he instead takes her to his confide. His flexible mindset made him not limited to the strict demands of society at that time.
The plot stands out uniquely in how it expresses Patience’s desire for change. On the other hand, grief is an underlying theme as Patience’s family is mourning. Additionally, the dialogue is lighthearted, amusing, and enjoyable, especially when Patience tries to learn her maid duties.
The romance part of the book is both sweet and entertaining. The two main characters have a rocky start, but their “project” gives them a perfect opportunity to bond. The ending includes some surprise twists and turns, all of which tie up to a satisfying conclusion. If you enjoy reading historical romance fiction books or are a fan of Kristi Ann Hunter or Sarah M. Eden’s books, then you will find this novel a perfect match.
The Roses of Feldstone
Rose and William were once friends as kids, but their friendship fell apart with time. This is because, over time, William became unkind to Rose. But then Rose would say things to annoy him because she never understood why he was so cold towards her.
But the truth is that William’s brother married a woman from a foreign country, which was against their social cast. In response, William’s father disowned and disinherited his brother, and William assumed the role of the heir. As expected, William was supposed to marry a woman of his social class. Even worse, his mother was discouraged and was bedridden due to losing her elder son. In response, William vowed to do whatever it took to make his mother happy.
Now 18, Rose finds herself longing for the old William. What motivates and gives her hope is that she’s seen several things that make her think William cares for her despite everything. But since their communication is absurd, she can’t figure out why William is acting cold to her when there are moments when he’s so kind to her. Her love for him becomes a tangled mess, but she’s ready to fight and never give up.
Suppose you enjoy reading stories with petit fours, social classes, ridiculous banter, dancing, fat cats, roses, gardens, ridiculous hats, and laughter. In that case, A Proper Charade by Ester Hatch is a good match for you.
