Nobody’s Princess
Nobody’s Princess is the first book in the Nobody’s Princess series. Hellen of Sparta is a beautiful princess with steely determination and a sassy attitude to match. While she is set to become Queen of Sparta in the future, Helen is not keen to follow the traditional path. Her love for adventure sees her following her brothers to the field for fighting lessons instead of staying indoors with the ladies doing some needlework. Since it is not common for a queen or a woman for that matter to practice fighting among the menfolk, Hellen has to disguise herself and dress like the rest of the boys. Fortunately, her mother, trainer, and brothers know about the training and support her fully.
When Helen’s twin sets off to wed with the Prince of Mykenae, Helen is among those who escort her to her new kingdom. Her brothers Polydeuces and Castor decide to go to Calydon to hunt for a rabid boar at some point, and Helen is left all alone with her sister. It is then that she decides that she would never be an average queen. Her future was undoubtedly on the battlefield, and she would do anything possible to be known for her heroic acts and not just her beauty. The author incorporates a few myths into the story, which adds some air of mystery and intrigue to it.
This story is a perfect blend of fiction and history and mythology. The author takes you back to ancient Greek and Spartan society, culture, and way of life. If you are a fan of Greek history, you will love Greece’s details and outstanding events that shaped the Spartan society. This book will also appeal to anyone who enjoys a story with a strong female character. Helen is the true definition of a strong young lady, and it is incredible how she wants to be judged through her actions and not her beauty. The story takes us through her childhood and teenage years, and it is lovely to see her transformation in those few years.
Nobody’s Princess is the story of a young girl who refuses to bow to societal expectations and forge her path. Hellen is born into royalty, but she is determined to be a fighter. Not even society expectations will deter her from achieving her goal. You would expect a princess would want to spend her time beautifying herself with the help of her servants, but Helen is not that kind of Princess. The message this book is pushing is perfect for teenage girls like Hellen, who are just discovering their identity. This book makes it clear that people should be judged according to their deeds and not their looks.
Sphinx’s Princess
Sphinx’s Princess is the first in the Sphinx’s Princess series. The book tells Nefertiti’s story, the beautiful and dutiful daughter of the Royal Wife’s brother. While Nefertiti is a commoner, her life is anything but ordinary. The young lady has been receiving scribe lessons in secret, and she is known to act quickly where injustice or cruelty is concerned. Her striking beauty is also known far and wide. When Queen Tiye hears of her niece’s beauty and impulsive behavior, she decides to use it as a pawn on her quest for power. The queen devises a plan to bring Nefertiti to the palace and keep her there before her marriage.
Nefertiti is taken from her family, an action that leaves her sad and lonely. Her life in the palace is characterized by danger and intrigue, and it is disturbing that her mind and spirit refuse to rest even when living among royalty. She is set to become a princess after marrying Queen Tiye’s firstborn son. However, in the three years before this marriage happens, she is to stay amidst Pharaoh’s junior wives, but she cannot communicate with them. You would think that her time in the palace would be a great time to get to know her betrothed, but the cold man rarely spends time with her.
A glimmer of light appears through the Prince’s brother, who also happens to be a scribe. Soon enough, Nefertiti is retaking scribe lessons in secret, and she greatly enjoys her betrothed brother’s company. The young man enjoys showing Nefertiti the city and teaching her to drive a chariot. However, when her betrothed learns about her escapades with his brother, he threatens Nefertiti.
Things take an exciting turn when the Pharaoh goes on a journey for a long time. His firstborn son takes over the throne, and Nefertiti is quick to notice his transformation. Is she finally falling in love with her husband to be? What about the recent accusation? Can her betrothed do anything to change her fate? Friesner again succeeds in blending mythology and historical fiction into a thrilling story. The tale will take you back to Egyptian history and its mythology.
Sphinx’s Princess is an enchanting read characterized by a strong female character, a rich Egyptian history, and a tension that doesn’t ease up until the last page. This is the story of a commoner who turns into royalty. Through Nefertiti, we get to experience the best of both worlds, and it is intriguing how the commoners over worshipped the gods. Imagine living in a society where one can be blamed for angering the gods for a small mistake. The book ends with a cliffhanger that will leave you searching for the next installment. You can only hope that the next book picks up where this one ended.
