Each and every book of this series features the chief protagonist in the role of an investigative reporter named Irwin Maurice Fletcher. Fletcher is a former Marine and is often referred to as I.M. Fletcher. However, he prefers to be called by his nickname, Fletch. Over the course of the series, Fletch gets involved in various mysteries and crime scenes, which he solves successfully with the help of his military training. Francis Xavier Flynn is depicted as a homicide detective working for the Boston Police department. This character features in several Fletch books. When Flynn’s character started gaining much appreciation from the critics and the readers, Gregory decided to develop another detective series with Flynn in the lead role. This is how the Flynn series was created. The last few books of the Fletch series are also linked to the Son of Fletch book series, which is also penned by Gregory McDonald. Author Gregory started writing the Fletch series in the year 1974, and also published its first book in the same year. This series’ debut novel was adapted into a movie called Fletch in 1985. The comedy film features actor Chevy Chase in the lead role of I.M. Fletcher. In 1989, another film called Fletch lives was developed, but it had an original storyline instead of using one of Gregory’s novels. The debut book of the Fletch series written by Gregory McDonald is entitled ‘Fletch’. It was released in 2002 by the Vintage publication, after its first release in 1974. The primary characters mentioned in the book include Irwin Fletcher and Alan Stanwyk. At the start of the book’s story, Fletch is shown as a reporter, who uses orthodox methods for his investigation. In his latest case, he takes to the beach to get some information about the drug being supplied there. When Fletch informs his editor about the case, she does not approve of his means to extract information. In spite of her disapproval, Fletch continues with the investigation and tries to discover the source of the drugs. Later, a multimillionaire named Alan Stanwyk gives a high paying job offer to Fletch. The job has many benefits for Fletch, if he accepts it, but he finds it intriguing and suspicious. So, he starts digging to know what the offer actually has in it for him. And his discoveries make it clear that the offer is just a means to make him go off-track in the drug-investigation case. Fletch goes on to unravel the drug business and also unmasks the real face of Alan Stanwyk of being a drug lord.

The sequel novel of this series is called ‘Confess, Fletch’. It was also published by Vintage Books in 2002. This book is set in Boston and has the central characters as Fletch & Flynn. At the beginning of the story of the book, it is depicted that Fletch visits Rome for investigating about the kidnapping of his fiancee’s father. He is also required to track down a robbed art collection that was a part of the fiancee’s family for generations. However, as soon as Fletch comes to his apartment, he discovers a body and things become much more complicated from there onwards. Flynn is appointed to handle the homicide case and he immediately takes in Fletch as the prime suspect. However, he had the feeling that there was another angle in this case that seemed to be missing. Fletch is on the run not only to prove his innocence, but also to find the art collection and the kidnappers. He breaks into an art gallery, where he comes across the mother of his fiancee. Flynn continues to be on his trail in the homicide case and with the twist and turns, he joins Fletch and together they start working on the cases. A point comes when everything becomes clear and Flynn & Fletch end up becoming good friends.
