Frank E. Peretti is a Christian fiction author that has been described as a natural storyteller best known for his inspirational and children’s novels. Peretti grew up in Seattle, where as a youngster he would tell animated stories to neighborhood children. Now referred to as one of America’s hottest Christian novelists, he is a publishing phenomenon with more than 12 million of his works in print. Once he graduated from high school, he decided that he wanted to become a musician and joined a local bluegrass band where he played banjo. After getting married in 1972, he stopped touring and instead began a small Christian music ministry. During this time, he studied screenwriting, English and film at the University of California and Los Angeles before he became a minister at an Assembly of God church. In 1983, he decided to give up his minister position and began working construction since he had a family to feed. He would later get a job at a ski factory and began writing “This Present Darkness” his debut novel that would become the breakthrough he needed as an aspiring author. He had a slow start to his career as he got tons of rejections and once he finally published, the sales were lackluster at best. It was only when Amy Grant the Christian singer started promoting it to her audience that the novel finally took off. He followed it up with “Piercing the Darkness” in 1989 and has never looked back since.

With millions of his novels sold, Frank E. Peretti has been compared and even declared a worthy successor to C.S Lewis. Peretti’s “This Present Darkness” series has sold millions yet except for his notoriety in the Christian community, he is virtually unknown in mainstream literary circles. Michael G. Maudlin called him the father of the blockbuster Christian fiction and a great fundamentalist novelist in an article he wrote for Christianity Today. Newsweek and Time hailed him as the founder of the crossover Christian thriller novel which makes sense given that he is an ordained minister that was the son of a minister. Peretti writes evangelical stories that celebrate the godly power of prayer and God. He gets much of his inspiration for his novels from Christian theology as his stories usually have good prevail over evil and angels vanquish demons. One of Peretti’s major themes is the spiritual warfare against demonic powers. He is single-handedly responsible for creating the Christian thriller genre of fiction for adults with novels such as “The Visitation,” “This Present Darkness,” “The Oath,” “Prophet,” and “Piercing the Darkness.”

Frank Peretti wrote the first novel of the “Cooper Kids Adventure Series,” “The Door in the Dragon’s Throat” in 1988. Just like he had done with Christian fiction, the series would become a bestseller with more than a million of the books in print. In 2000, he reprised his role as the offbeat substitute Sunday School teacher Mr. Henry in the “Wild and Wacky Totally True Bible Stories” series. These were hilarious stories for children releases in the form of audiocassettes that drew inspiration from the “Visual Bible for Kids” series. “The Wounded Spirit” was his first nonfiction work that he released in 2000 that became a bestseller within a few weeks of release. The novel that is inspired by his painful childhood experiences is written on the theme of the pain of wounded spirits. He also started writing the “Veritas Project” series with “Hangman’s Curse” published in 2001. The novels are targeted at both teens and tweens and posit the “Veritas Project” as a secret government project that is set up to break up criminal rings and fight crime. The series has been called the “evangelical Christian X-Files” by Elaine Fort of School Library Journal. Despite gaining much notoriety and fame, he still lives a well rounded and simple life and when he is not writing he loves to do some carpentry, biking, banjo making, sculpturing, banjo making, and flying.

Frank E Peretti’s “The Door in the Dragon’s Throat” introduces Lila and Jay Cooper who follow their father Jake Cooper on a series of adventures. Jake is a renowned archeologist that loves his kids so much and thus brings them along when he goes on his work trips. They have a lot of fun as they travel to new places and get to learn new skills but often get into some dangerous situations too. In this novel, the family heads to Nepur, where they intend to learn and discover facts on an ancient legend. According to locals, the “Dragon’s Throat,” which is a dark cavern has a secret door inside it which will doom to death anyone who tries to open it. But the Cooper family is Christian and believes in the power of God. As such, they go into the cavern intending to find out what lies on the other side of the mythical Door. In their quest, they have to overcome many challenges and go through a range of tough obstacles before they get to the Door. As they are deep inside the Dragon’s Throat, a strange man tries to make them leave though his motivations are unclear.

Escape from the Island of Aquarius by Frank E. Peretti continues the story of Lila and Jay Cooper. In this installment, they join Jake Cooper their father who is going to Aquarius, an island where Adam MacKenzie a missionary is being held captive. Upon arrival, they find a man leading a bizarre colony that claims that he is the Adam they are seeking. The missionary seems to have come up with unorthodox and strange ideas. He asserts that there is an ancient curse and ancient forces at work and that not even God can beat them. According to the man, all the islanders want to do is to live in harmony without having their lives interfered with by modernity. But when Lila, Jay, and their father start their investigations, they suddenly find themselves targeted by the enigmatic Moro-Kunda. Things only get worse when they learn that the island is being terrorized by erosion and earthquakes. Will they have enough time to locate the real missionary before the island is destroyed.

Frank E. Peretti’s “The Tombs of Anak” is a novel set in Palestine, where three men digging on an archeological site just found an ancient Philistine temple. Digging deeper, they find a strange room deep beneath the ancient temple. One of the men is determined to explore the strange room and is adamant about being let into the cavern. His colleagues finally relent and let him down only for the man to immediately disappear. The Coopers soon arrive on the scene and are soon deep into the intrigue, mystery, and danger that involves the famous Anakim from Genesis. It is in this situation that their faith comes to bear even in the face of extreme danger and even death. It is an extremely creepy and moving novel that fills one with adrenaline in the face of a perilous quest for truth by the Coopers.

The Present Darkness

The Present Darkness is the first installment in the Darkness book series. In Present Darkness, author Frank E. Peretti introduces the readers to Bernice Krueger, a reporter who works for the Ashton Chronicles, who finds herself behind bars after she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Bernice Kruger relocated to Ashton with the hopes of investigating the supposed suicide of her younger sister. Now, Kruger and her boss, one Marshal Morgan must begin to look into some of the weird occurrences within the town. Apart from Kruger, the author also introduces the readers to Hank Busche, a small town pastor, who is more than determined to ensure that his rather argumentative congregation does not fall apart. However, Hank is unaware that there are numerous dark forces within the town that are ensuring that he does not succeed. As all the demon characters, are busy executing their plans, Marshall and Hank become more than convinced that they need to find out the truth.

However, the question remains as to whether these two men will have the strength and the ability to fight off the host of demons that are not visible to the human eye. Furthermore, what is the main reason why the host of heaven is standing around to watch? With that said, the Present of Darkness is a brilliant story. Bernice, Hank, and Marshall stumble upon the truth. They also realize that to save Ashton, they must work together. The reader is going to fall in love with the way, in which the author has portrayed, the angels, as mighty warriors, who interact with one another. The reader will also fall in love with how the author, Peretti, has shown the power of prayer. The Present Darkness is not only scary, but it is also thrilling, scaring and brilliant as well.

Piercing the Darkness

Piercing the Darkness is a classic novel by Frank E Peretti. In this novel, author Frank E. Peretti creates a situation where all the angels in the novels engage in a battle with the demons from hell, with the aim of assisting a small group of people within a town overcome their biggest legal and personal battles. Peretti is a master creator when it comes to creating narratives. The book begins, as he possesses the question, what if spiritual fighting looked just like real-life warfare? Just like the first installment, Piercing the Darkness follows the main characters and heavenly warriors who were introduced in the first installment as they fight against demons, who were more than determined to go after Sally’s life. There was a failed murder attempt on Sally’s life. The group also battle for the spiritual, emotional and personal well-being of a Christian school principal, who all of a sudden finds himself battling a lawsuit against the Christian school. As this happens, they try to regain the principal’s children from the CPS, who had decided to take the children from him for no reason at all. With that said, Piercing the Darkness is an excellent read that was full of action and suspense as well.

This book is highly recommended to any Christian reader. Peretti has done an excellent job of showing the readers a preview of the spiritual warfare that was going on as well as well as its importance. The story was not only easy to follow but was also quite gripping.

The Haunted

The Haunted is the story about Professor, priest who turned into a pragmatist. The professor no longer believes that there is God. Thus, the professor will do anything to ensure that there is a logical explanation for everything. Through several invitations, the heroes in the Haunted find themselves on a plane that is heading to Seattle. These characters believe that they have, separate reasons. However, they do not. The professor has the opportunity of meeting with one of his long-time friends, AJ Van Epps, who informs him of a strange house. Recently, two residents had passed away and deep down he knows that these deaths have something to do with the reappearing house. Aj Van Epps manages to convince the professor to assist him with the investigations. The witty Professor decides to assist him and goes straight to the location of the strange house.

Once he arrived, he runs into tattoo artist, Brenda, who was speaking to a psychic. The professor and Brenda decide to go for their reading. The psychic is known as Earthsong and tells them that they are going to set a boy free who was a prisoner. Several days pass by, and nothing strange happens. However, one day, the Professor begins to notice that a Spectre was following him around. The professor decides to stop, and the specter passes by him and walks into a house that initially was not there. The house is a two-story Victorian house that is richly detailed and covered with sleepy and porch front windows. The professor asks two other people to assist him including Van Epps, who agrees to stay out of the house with a camera. The professor and three others enter into the house. Once inside the house, the four individuals realize that there were no lights in the house. What happens next will keep the readers fully entertained.

The only “series” I believe are This Present Darkness, Piercing The Darkness & Prophet. The Cooper stories are about 1 family’s adventure, but not necessarily a series. They are all amazing.

After reading all of that and appreciating the information, I still don’t know if any of Peretti’s books (besides Present Darkness (2)) are series or stand-alone books.
