Author Gail Zehner Martin was born on December 1, 1962 in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Martin got her BA in the field of history in the year 1984 from Grove City College, and two years later, got her MBA from Pennsylvania State University in the field Management and Marketing Information Systems. She had roles in marketing and was a Vice President of Corporate Communications for seventeen years. After she did this, she founded DreamSpinner Communications in the year 2003.
Her first novel was released in the year 2007, and was the first book of “The Chronicles of the Necromancer”, with the title of “The Summoner”. Gail Martin has also published some stand alone novels, non fiction books, and “Fallen Kings Cycle” series and “Ascendant Kingdoms Saga” series.
The first story she ever wrote was when she was five, and it was about a vampire. When she was only fourteen years old, she made the choice to become a writer. While in preschool, she enjoyed watching “Dark Shadows” and “Lost in Space”.
Now she enjoys going to Renaissance fairs, science fiction or fantasy conventions, as well as living history sites.
She got married to an author named Larry N. Martin in the year 1987 and the couple has three children together, two cats and a dog. The couple have written some stories together.
She writes urban fantasy and epic fantasy; the most well known work she has written is “The Chronicles of the Necromancer”.
“The Summoner” is the first novel in the “Chronicles of the Necromancer” series and was released in the year 2007. King Bricen of Margolan’s second son Martris Drayke’s comfortable world is wrecked when Jared (his older half brother) and Foor Arontala (dark mage of Jared) murder the king and take away the crown for his own evil purposes. Tris is now the royal family’s sole survivor, besides Jared, who is now a turncoat.
Tris is able to leave without being killed with three of his friends: Carroway (master bard of the court), Soterius (who is the guard’s captain), and Harrtuck (who is part of the royal guard). He has a big secret he is keeping. Spirits walk around and influence the living’s affairs, he thinks he could have his grandmother’s power within him. Her name was Bava K’aa, who was the best sorceress of her own time. If this were true, it would make him a Summoner. It is a very rare magical gift to have, and makes it possible for him to arbitrate between both the dead and the living.
Fans of the novel found that this is the debut of a new talent that starts an epic story. It was written by an author that shows her visionary imagination and accomplished skill. Some are glad that they read this, as it has the fast pace and characters that you care about. It was enjoyable to see the main character learn more about himself, and meet up with some new friends on the journey. It was also a nice twist seeing a necromancer as the good guy in the book.
“The Blood King” is the second novel in the “Chronicles of the Necromancer” series and was released in the year 2008. Tris has escaped being killed by Jared, his evil brother, and he has to take control of the magical abilities he has that allows him to communicate with dead people. He also has to put together a large enough army to take back his dead father’s throne.
Jared is not the only one that Tris has to fight. Foor Arontala, who is the dark mage, has some schemes of her own so that she can summon the Obsidian King.
Fans of the novel found this to be exciting and quite the page turner of a book. A few readers were able to get through the book in a little under two days, and they feel sad they are coming close to the end of the story. The story moves with heart pounding moments and electrifying suspense that leaves the reader trying to catch their breath. The book is a good sequel to the first book, as it keeps things fresh, yet continues doing what the first book did well.
“Dark Haven” is the third novel in the “Chronicles of the Necromancer” series and was released in the year 2009. The reign of terror that Jared the Usurper has unleashed upon Dark Haven strike at the Winter Kingdoms’ ability to stabilize itself. A power struggle between vayash moru and the mortals is going on as forces of undead align against Dark Haven’s Lord Jonmarc Vahanian.
Members of the vayash moru are quite unhappy that a lord that is mortal returns to Dark Haven. Jonmarc has to gain the trust of the mortals in Dark Haven, and play a dangerous political game with the vayash moru in the place. The last four lords died young, which is something that everyone reminds him. All of the Winter Kingdoms, magic has started to be a force that is both unpredictable and dangerous.
The river of magical energy, called The Flow, was horribly damaged when the Soulcatcher orb was ripped from Dark Haven many years back by Arontala. The Flow is now unstable, which threatens the lives and sanity of the many mages that draw on its power. King Martris Drayke gets ready for his wedding, and has to prepare for the fight against those rebels that still have loyalty for Jared. Isencroft is about to have civil war break out because of the fact that a joint kingdom is about to happen.
Each of the Winter Kingdoms are going to be changed forever, with innocence being the very first casualty. This is the only thing that is certain at this point.
Fans of the novel found this to be another installment that will leave its readers breathless and wonder what will happen next. These are strong characters that have emotions, they are not just muscle and magic. Each time, the author raises the stakes, by giving the heroes deeper holes to escape. Without any far fetched solutions to them, which is another plus for readers. This is a series that keeps up your interest the entire time you read it, and seems to be getting better with each page. Some cannot wait to get their hands on the next one to get started on that one.
