The Garrett P.I. series is a series of mystery and fantasy novels written by author the popular American Glen Cook. The series features Garrett as a freelance private investigator. In his world, magic looks very much real and is prevalent everywhere along with the intelligent half-breed species, which coexist along with the humans in an uneasy way. There is a total of 14 novels published in the series with a few more to be published soon as the series is currently going on. Author Glen Cook began writing the series in the year 1987 and since then, he has published at least one novel every year. Cook has written the novels of the series in a film noir style, depicting elements of detective fiction and traditional mysteries. There are also many humorous dialogues in the novels of the series. The main protagonist Garrett lives in a fantasy world and undergoes many adventures to solve the mysteries. He moves from his home city of TunFaire to those of Cantard and Karenta in search of evidences and meets many centaurs, wizards, elves, trolls, vampires and witches. Although the novels of the series are set in a fantasy world, their plots focus more on the detective aspects. Garrett was called as Wart by his mother when he was young. He is introduced in the series as an ex-marine and is tall and handsome, with blue eyes and red hair. Garrett appears very fit physically, and is aged in his mid 30s.

Before working as a private investigator, he had spent 5 years in the marines, but was discharged and sent home. Even though he owns his own freelance investigative service, he does not like to work very much, and only tries to make his ends meet. Initially, Garrett does not seem to have enough money, however, at the end of the first novel of the series, he collects some amount of money to buy a house for himself. The initial and constant source of income of Garrett was from the contract with Max Weider, who had hired him to check the corrupt activities at his breweries. As far as the personality of Garrett is concerned, he likes to drink a lot of beer and indulge in romantic relationships with different types of women. One of his most prominent partners is a woman named Tinnie Tate. He says that he likes to prefer more of the redheads. The adventures of Garrett mostly include rescuing women from difficulties. The cases in which is involved are often made even more difficult due to his goodwill towards other people and his conscience. Garrett does not prefer to kill anyone unless he is sure that they are actually evil. The other recurring characters of the series include Morley Dotes, Saucerhead Tharpe, The Dead Man, Dean. Playmate, Winger, Tinnie Tate, as well as a few others. Morley is introduced as an entrepreneur who owns a bar and restaurant. He is known to be the best street fighter and one of the best friends of Garrett. Saucerhead Tharpe is a bodyguard and professional thug. He is also a friend of Garrett and Morley. Tharpe likes to beat people for money. The Dead Man is the partner of Garrett and belongs to the rare species of Loghyr. Dean is described as a cook and housekeeper, and ages around 70 years.

The first novel of the Garrett P.I. series was published in the year 1987 by the Roc publishing house. It was titled ‘Sweet Silver Blues’ and deals about a mysterious case involving Garrett as the private investigator for the first time. In the opening sequence of the novel, he is seen working on a case, which seemed simple but was very difficult actually. He strives hard to track down a woman, who was left with a fortune in silver by the Garrett’s dead friend Danny. He takes the help of Morley Dotes, who is one of the toughest half-elf. However, even with his help, Garrett is not sure whether he will come out alive from the magical and deadly world of vampires, witches, wizards, elves, etc., who seem to be hungry for the human blood. Even though the people of TunFaire city come to Garrett for help at the time of trouble, he himself gets attracted towards on his own, as seen on many occasions. He seems to be surrounded by trouble all the time, whether he likes or not, it’s not up to him. At the beginning of the novel, Garrett gets approached by the Tate family for investigating the death of an old army man named Denny Tate. Before succumbing to the injuries from the accident, Denny had acquired a huge fortune of silver and he according to his will, he had donated all of it to Kayean Kronk, the woman he loved. Kayean is believed to be living somewhere around Cantard and Tate family wants Garrett to find her so that they can deliver the fortune to her. Things begin to become difficult when other parties try to steal the fortune. Garrett sets out to find Kayean along with his friend Morley. He saves her from the vampires and allows the Tates to deliver the silver fortune to her. They also give Garrett a portion of the fortune as his fee. With the money, Garrett purchases a new house and starts living with the Dead Man. He also starts his own freelancing investigative agency.

The second novel of the series written by author Glen Cook was published under the title ‘Bitter Gold Hearts’. It was published by the Roc publishing house in the year 1988. The plot of this novel deals with a case in which several children of Stormwarden get kidnapped. Private Investigator Garrett is asked to carry out the investigation and help to catch the kidnappers. But, he is caught between the a fearsome and powerful horde of ogres and a beautiful half-elf. He is required to think twice before going for the gold fortune and sacrificing everything else. As the story begins, Garrett comes to know that the son of Stormwarden Raver Styx named Karl daPena is kidnapped, through a young woman named Amiranda Crest. He is asked to help with the exchange of the ransom and Karl with the kidnappers. However, when Garrett gets attacked in the process, he begins to get involved more in the case. Soon, other closed ones of the Stormwarden get kidnapped, while Amiranda Crest gets murdered at the hands of the kidnappers. The situation becomes ugly and Garrett ha to flee from the scene along with his company. The remaining mystery of the plot is explained in the narrative by the Dead Man.
