Garth Stein is a New York Times bestselling American writer and movie producer from Seattle, Washington, who is famous for writing historical, gothic, comic-of-age novels, and ghost stories. He is widely known for writing the bestselling book, The Art of Dancing in the Rain. In addition to writing novels, author Garth is also involved in making documentary films, teaching, racing and working as a playwright. Garth’s birth had taken place on December 06, 1964, in Los Angeles, California. He spent most of his childhood time in Seattle. Garth’s father was a native of Brooklyn and was the son of a Jewish immigrant from Austria. This way author Garth considers himself as an Austrian descendant. Garth’s mother came from Alaska and had her roots in the Irish and Tlingit descent. The readers can see a glimpse of the Tlingit heritage of Garth in his debut book, Raven Stole the Moon. Author Garth obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Columbia University’s Columbia College in the year 1987. Later, he also earned his MA degree in Fine Arts from the Arts School of the same university in 1990. Right after the completion of graduation, Garth got involved in film making and accept any job opportunity that came his way. He has worked as a producer, director, and writer for documentary films, some of which have won prestigious awards. Garth was the co-producer of the 1991 Academy Award winner, The Lunch Date. The was an excellent short film that attracted many viewers and critics. Later, author Garth also co-produced a movie based on the Democratic National Convention of 1992, known by the name The Last Party. Garth’s sister had to undergo a brain surgery due to some illness, which he took care of from start to end. Later, decided to make a documentary of the entire process. When the idea saw the light of the day, Garth decided to direct as well as produce the documentary. After spending some time in the world of film making, author Garth decided to shift his focus towards creative writing. He was also involved in teaching the art of creative writing to the students at Tacoma Arts School.

Among the published literary works of author Garth, there are 3 books and 2 plays. His debut play was Brother Jones, which was produced in 2005 in Los Angeles. His second play was written for the Shorewood School’s theatrical department, which is also his alma mater located in Shoreline, WA. The third novel of Garth’s career went on to win the Pacific Booksellers Award in 2009 and was also listed as a bestseller in the NYT. This book revolves around the life story of dog named Enzo, who is obsessed with racing cars. Enzo believes that he will get reincarnated in the form of a human in his next life. Enzo’s owner, racer Denny Swift, teaches him all about the racing world and the its art. However, Enzo, gets most of his knowledge and ideas, including the crazy one about reincarnation, from watching TV. Author Garth got the inspiration to write this book after he watched a Mongolian documentary. For developing the characters and describing the insights of racing, author Garth used his own experience as a car racer. In 2001, had shifted to Seattle from New York City to learn high performance driving and to earn a racing license. He was involved in a serious crash while racing on a rainy track and decided to leave racing completely. Author Garth spent 18 years of his life in New York City and then returned back to Seattle. He is happily married and currently resides with his beautiful wife named Andrea Perbinder Stein. The two are blessed with 3 sons, Eamon, Dashiell, and Caleb. When Garth was in New York, he used to rehearse with a rock band known as Zero Band. This band hardly got the chance to perform on stage.

An initial book penned by Garth Stein is entitled ‘A Sudden Light’. It was released in the year 2014 by the Simon Schuster publication. The story of this book revolves around the attempts of a young boy to save the marriage of his parents by discovering the legacy of his family’s secrets. Garth has written it in the form of a ghost story. The main characters involved are Trevor, Jones, Serena, Samuel, and Elijah Riddell. At the start of the story, it is depicted that a 14 year old boy named Trevor Riddell gets to see the Riddell House for the first time in 1990’s summer. This legendary family house was constructed from huge whole tress and was built at the time when the family had a massive fortune out of timber business. Now, the family has become bankrupt, and is left with only the big mansion covering a huge estate near Puget Sound. Trevor’s father, Jones, has filed for separation from his wife due to some problems arose between the two because of the financial problems. He has a motive behind bringing Trevor to the family mansion. Jones wants Trevor to join his sister Serena in dispatching Grandpa Samuel to an assisted living facility so that he could sell the house. Jones sees it as the only option of overcoming bankruptcy as he is getting pretty good offers for the development of tract housing on the family property. But, Trevor finds that there is a ghost living in the mansion. This ghost, Elijah, whose wish is that the property be turned into forest land in order to pay for the numerous trees that the Riddell has harvested over the years for their timber business. Trevor shows a willingness to learn about his family’s past, while its future lies in the hands.

Another exciting written by Garth is called ‘How Evan Broke His Head & Other Secrets’. This was released by the Soho Press in 2014. The primary characters of this book include Evan and Dean, who are a father-son pair. At the beginning of the book’s story, it is shown that Evan sees his son after a gap of 14 years. Like every father’s wish to get the first look of their children, he too was dying to see Dean all these years. Dean had been sent to another city secretly along with his mother when he was just born. Now, after 14 years, Evan learns that his wife has died and Dean is coming to stay with him. This makes him a single parent all of a sudden. Once, Evan was a lead guitarist in a popular band. Now, he works as a guitar instructor for young boys and does some odd jobs at a music shop. As Dean has arrived in his life, he is required to change himself fast. For this, he must face his past and look up to his own dad. Also, he must get over the epilepsy haunting him and threatening each moment of his life.

    “The Art of Racing in the Rain” is NOT just a book for “dog lovers”…it is a great book.
