Gary McCarthy is an American author who writes historical novels and westerns. The author has millions of books in print and he continues to write to this day. He is always looking for new stories to write about the American West and enjoys researching new ones the most.
The author grew up in the American west in California, Nevada, and Arizona. This made him particularly well suited to writing about the American West. He has always had an interest in Native American cultures and knows a lot of the Hopi, Navajo, Havasupai and Haulapai who live in Northern Arizona. In college, he studied Animal Science and Agricultural Economics.
McCarthy is married and lives with his wife in Arizona. The couple enjoys horseback riding and hiking, they have spent time in the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests.
Gary has won awards for his writing over the years. He was the winner of the Western Writers of America’s Spur Award for The Gila River in 1993, the 2009 Western Writers of America’s Spur Award for Best Audio Book for River Thunder, and he also received the Life Achievement Peacemaker Award by the Western Fictioneers.
The Horsemen & The Derby Man is McCarthy bringing together the cast of two of his most popular series. It’s been years since Ruff, Dixie and Houston Ballou left Tennessee and the family have begun looking for a place to build a horse ranch and racetrack. A series of events take them to Prescott Valley, Arizona’s new Territorial capital. Darby Buckingham is going from Santa Fe to Prescott to help his longtime love. He’s nearly there when his stagecoach driver flips the coach. Darby is in desperate circumstances when the Ballou family arrive.
Maddie O’Brien’s Wild Turkeys begins after days of rain storms as Maddie O’Brien decides to venture out into the forest with her grandfather. The two of them come across a nest of eleven turkey eggs and their dying mother. When the mother doesn’t make it, the two become determined to raise the poults. Times are tough and the turkeys seem destined for the dinner table, but Maddie will do what she can to help her turkeys and her family.
The Fighting Doctor is the first book in the Medicine Wagon series. The story follows Henry Wallace, the son of a prominent physician in Boston, during his last quarter of college before graduation. Unfortunately, he’ll never graduate. He is forced into a fight and ends up killing the man, the son of a notorious gangster. The police, funded by the gangsters, arrest Henry and sentence him to life so he does the only thing he can do: escape. Henry is now a fugitive and the gangster’s hit men are after him. He makes his way to Denver where he meets the owner of a medicine wagon that will change everything for him.
Sisters of the Wyoming Mountains is about strong-willed sisters making their way after the loss of their mother. They’ve had some rough hardships in life and now they’re pulling their sick father in a Mormon handcart into the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. Rebecca is a gifted healer who finds it hard in the all-male profession and Katie wants to build a Wyoming sheep ranching empire. There are many other characters, including Amos is a polygamist who wishes to make Rebecca his fifth wife, Bryce is a man out for revenge that sees his view change when he meets Rebecca, a tortured Army doctor who is holding on by saving soldiers at Fort Bridger, and a great Shoshone chief named Washaki. The book is based on the true story of the Wyoming women who fought for woman’s suffrage.
Grand Canyon Thunder is the first book in the National Parks historical fiction series. The 1869 Powell Expedition went along the mighty Colorado River on a deadly stretch of river known as Separation Rapids. Three men ended up abandoning the expedition and tried to survive in the wild, but only one of the three could survive high up on the wild. William Dunn is a mountain man haunted by guilt and driven by love. He will cast his fate across the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River.
Mesa Verde Thunder is the second book in the National Parks series. A bold Anasazi leader sees a vision of Raven which makes him realize that he needs to take his people north. A Chacoan medicine woman will risk it all to save a mother and her child from stoning, a move that will leave her branded as a witch. The Horseman is the first book in a series of the same name. The story follows the Ballou family as they leave Tennessee and head to the West to make a new life. They head to a place where their new neighbors will either become their friends for life… or their enemies.
The Derby Man follows Darby Buckingham. He was an unlikely candidate for life in the west with his round-toed shoes and derby hat. Darby is a man of culture who liked gourmet restaurants and expensive cigars. He made his fortune in New York writing novels about the old west and has decided to make his way to the West to do his own research. He was only heading out to learn more about the West, but he soon found himself joining sheriff Zeb Cather in a manhunt for the ruthless Raton Brothers.
Showdown at Snakegrass Junction is the second book in The Derby Man series. Darby takes up playing lawman when his friend Sheriff Zeb Cather is taken out of the picture. The town needs him with their neighbors from Snakegrass Junction determined to blast them out of existence.
