Phillips has penned a variety of stand alone novels for readers to enjoy and some graphic novels. He has contributed to many different series and edited several anthologies too.
Gary Phillips is the creator and the author of the Ivan Monk series of fictional novels. The series first began in 1994 with the publication of the debut novel, Violent Spring. That was followed in 1996 by the publication of the second installment of the series, Perdition, U.S.A. The third novel came out in 1998 and is titled Bad Night is Falling. The fourth novel would be released in 2000 and is titled Only the Wicked. In 2004 a collection of the series was released with all of the stories called Monkology: The Ivan Monk stories.
Violent Spring is the first novel in the Ivan Monk series of novels written by Gary Phillips. If you like crime novels or any story with a bit of action and adventure, be sure to check the debut story in this series out for yourself!
The story of this book is set in the moments that come after the beating of Rodney King and the large scale rioting that happened after. This story is set in the city of Los Angeles.
Main character Ivan Monk is African-American and a private investigator. The private eye is on a job, looking for a killer in a city that is going through an extremely strong moment of racial tension that may continue to get more intense. While looking for a killer, Ivan finds that another body has been discovered. Could the two be related?
The PI has been looking into a Korean shop owner’s death, but there is so much going on at the moment he can barely get his head around things. Some think that the murder may have had to do with race, but Monk suspects that the most likely motivation may have been greed.
Monk has the FBI as well as the city’s biggest gang, the Rolling Daltons, following behind him. He’s also starting to wonder about these cases. Could there be more than just murder going on? Moving all over the city from the richest areas to the very poorest, Ivan Monk is looking for answers. Will the famous City of Angels be willing to help him out?
Pick up a copy of Violent Spring and read to the end to find out what this private eye discovers!
Perdition, U.S.A. is the second novel in the Ivan Monk series by author Gary Phillips. If you read the first novel and thought that it was engaging, be sure to move on to its sequel and catch all of the action!
Main character and private investigator Ivan Monk is back. This time he’s looking into a suspicious event. Three young men, all black, have been killed. They were all gunned down on blocks close to each other. One was a college student, the other a crack dealer, and another a petty thief.
What do they all have in common with each other– or someone else out there? That’s what Ivan Monk intends to find out. As he looks into the case, he gets busy investigating what links they all could potentially share.
But just like that, he’s starting to get into the thick of it. As Ivan searches for clues with the ‘random’ murders, he also starts to uncover signs that this is part of a racial conspiracy held in a small town in the Northwest. Could this be about skin color more than anything else? Does the case go deeper than he ever suspected it could? Find out by picking up a copy of this thriller and reading to the end!
If you’re looking for more from this author to read, check out Matthew Henson and the Ice Temple of Harlem. This is the right book for you if you’re looking for a little adventure!
The reader follows along on Matt Henson’s journey. Matthew was the first black man ever to get to the North Pole. Now at the end of the twenties, he’s got a job to get back a spiritual leader’s kidnapped daughter and look after her and her father for some time and keep them safe until they can go to a rally and deliver a speech.
Henson has the ability to do so, but must use all of the skills that he’s learned over the years. In the process of this new gig, he’ll meet up with people like Dutch Schultz, a gangster that wants to cut back on his competition, and Nikola Tesla, the famous inventor. Matthew is in a race against time to try and save others and protect an Arctic meteor fragment from coming into the wrong hands, all with a death ray trying to close in on him.
Can Matt Henson get the job done and live to tell the tale? Read this book to find out!
