The Geronimo Stilton series is series of bestselling novels written by the famous Italian author named Elisabetta Dami and based on the children’s book genre. It consists of a total of 63 books published between the years 2000 and 2015. All the books in the series were published by the Edizioni Piemme publishing house based in Milan, Italy, since the year 2000. The novels of this series were originally written in the Italian language and their English versions were published by the Scholastic Corporation, since the year 2004. Each of the novels in the series feature the main character in the form of Geronimo Stilton, who is also credited to be the author of the series. However, the original idea of the series is of author Elisabetta Dami, who has also written the novels of the series. Crediting Geronimo Stilton as the author and main character of the series is just a marketing strategy used by author Elisabetta Dami. In fact, the older novels of the series have been issued under the copyright of the pseudonym ‘Geronimo Stilton’, which was later changed in the newer books. Author Elisabetta Dami has said that she had intended to write the novels of this series for the children between the ages of 6 and 12. All the novels of the series feature Geronimo Stilton as the primary character, who is a talking mouse living in the fictional New Mouse City located on the Mouse Island. Author Elisabetta Dami has described Geronimo Stilton as a bestselling novelist, working as an editor and journalist for the well known fictional newspaper agency of the New Mouse City, called as The Rodent’s Gazette. Geronimo’s family consists of a younger sister by the name Thea Stilton, a cousin called Trap Stilton, and a loving nephew named Benjamin Stilton, who is just 9 years old.
The personality of Geronimo Stilton is like that of a mild mannered and a nervous mouse who likes nothing else except living his life in a quiet and peaceful manner. However, throughout the course of the novels of the series, it is shown that he often keeps getting involved in one or the other adventures along with Trap, Benjamin, and his sister Thea Stilton. Sometimes, his Aunt Sweetfur also joins him in the faraway adventures. All the books in the series are written in such a manner that they appear to be the autobiographical stories of adventures in the life of Geronimo Stilton. Initially, the series began in Italy and famous as a children’s book series in the country. As of today, the series has become very much popular all over the world and has been translated into more than 35 foreign languages worldwide. The publishing rights of the English translations of Geronimo Stilton’s graphic novels have been obtained by a publishing company named Papercutz. The graphic novels of the series have retained some of the original names of the popular characters from the original series, which were changed by the Scholastic Corporation while translating it into story books. A few of the named retained by Papercutz from the original series include Pandora and Patty Spring, which were changed to Bugsy Wugsy and Petunia Pretty Jaws respectively by the Scholastic Corporation. A few other books have been published under the series featuring Thea Stilton as the lead character.
The Geronimo Stilton books are also available on the CD and audio-cassette versions which have been published by the Scholastic Audio Books. The first three collections of the Audiobooks contain three stories each and the 10th book in the series is published as a single audio book. All the other audio books in the Geronimo Stilton series are published in pairings. The first 10 books of the series can be heard in the voice of Edward Hermann and the rest others in the voice of Bill Lobley. The novel series, Geronimo Stilton has also been adapted into an animated television series. A couple of seasons of the TV series consisting of 26 episodes each have already been completed and telecast in The Netherlands and Belgium, which started in the year 2009. Currently, the third season of the series is in production. Along with the graphic novels of the Geronimo Stilton series, the Papercutz publishing house has also published the graphic novels of Thea Stilton series, since the year 2013. The famous newspaper of Geronimo Stilton in the New Mouse City, The Rodent’s Gazette, gets updated every several months and features the latest adventures and books of Geronimo Stilton. The paper is also the official website for the English readers all over the world. Since the year 2006, the Scholastic Corporation editors have stopped writing the top stories of the series. But, they still continue to update the Book Reviews section with the latest reviews, book covers, ad the summaries of the latest adventures of Geronimo Stilton.
The first novel of the Geronimo Stilton series was published under the title ‘Lost Treasure of the Emerald Eye’. It was released by the Scholastic Paperbacks in the year 2004. The plot of this novel shows how Geronimo Stilton describes his first adventure when his sister Thea Stilton came across an old and mysterious map. After that, all the adventures in the life of Geronimo Stilton began and never actually stopped. In no time after the discovery of the mysterious and old map by Thea Stilton, Geronimo was dragged by her in her treasure hunt along with his cousin named Trap Stilton. Geronimo describes the adventure as the one which can never be forgotten. This novel was followed by another interesting novel titled as ‘The Curse of the Cheese Pyramid’. This novel was released by the Scholastic Corporation publishing house in the year 2004. The plot of this novel once again introduces the members of the family of Geronimo Stilton, who are also the primary characters of the series.
Some of them include his cousin named Trap Stilton, his adventurous and lovely sister named Thea Stilton, as well as his favorite nephew named Benjamin Stilton. In the opening sequence of the plot of this novel, it is shown that Geronimo’s father named William shows up suddenly and orders to take over the famous newspaper, The Rodent’s Gazette. At first, he fires all the workers in the newspaper agency and then orders Geronimo to go on a tour to Egypt. He also asks him to meet professor Alrat Spitfur and obtain the knowledge of generating energy from the camel dung. While visiting Egypt, Geronimo studies about the Pyramids and secrets about the other Wonders in The Mouse World. After returning from Egypt, he makes a plan along with his colleagues to get rid of his grandfather. In the end, author Elisabetta Dami has managed to introduce the kids to the history and culture of Egypt along with entertaining them.
