His career would start out in webcomics finding an audience an online, which is a readership he continues to foster and nurture to this day. Maintaining a following both online and off, he attends many different events worldwide, delivering his work to an international audience. Becoming a household name for many, he’s produced a number of well known comic-book series as well, as he continues a variety of different franchises. Writing series such as ‘Scary Go Round,’ which would be in the tradition of British horror, Allison would later propose a more realistic spin-off titled ‘Giant Days’ looking at university life.
Starting out back in 2011 as a webcomic, Allison’s ‘Giant Days’ series is one such collection of comics that he’s become well known for. Becoming a comic-book in 2015, the series would run through to 2019, building up a popular following, while also winning several Eisner and and Harvey awards for the duration of its run. This would also be a series that John Allison would focus on writing, leaving a lot of the artwork and illustrations to the talents of Lissa Treiman and Max Sarin as artists. There would also be a collection of three compendiums titled ‘Not on the Test,’ which would collect eight issues at a time in hardback, running up to issue twenty-four.

Giant Days Volume One
Collecting the first four issues of the Giant Day series, this would be the starting point for the franchise, although there would be ‘Early Registration,’ which would feature some prequel stories. Originally published back in 2015 on the 24th of November, it would come out through the ‘BOOM! Box’ publishing outlet. It was illustrated by Lissa Treiman, and would introduce many of the principle characters for the very first time.

The series features many strong themes and ideas, such as friendship looking at the interactions between the many characters. This is something that the series really fleshes out well for the duration of its run, making the most of this concept. There’s also a look at ideas of feminism too, dealing with them with tact, sensitivity and humor, as it proves to be an intelligent and witty set of stories.

Bringing the world to life too, it makes the most of its location, with the setting being Sheffield University in the United Kingdom. Coming across like a sitcom at times, there’s definitely a lot of personality to it, with some inventive and clever setups established. Each of the characters has their own distinctive personalities, and the stories are really involving, keeping the reader invested in the action.

Following the characters of Esther, Susan, and Daisy, this sees the three characters becoming friends fast after just three weeks at university. Looking to reinvent themselves and their lives, they find themselves experiment and navigating this newfound land, while dealing with the rigmarole of academia. That’s when things start to get strange, as they find themselves contending with some weird and wonderful mysteries and surprises. Will they be able to manage it all? What will become of the influenza mystery? Where will their journey taken them?

Giant Days Volume Two
This would collect issues five through to eight of the individual Giant Days series of comics, making way for the third volume to be published in 2016. Once again published through the ‘BOOM! Box’ publishing label, this would also come out in 2016 on the 12th of April. Both the illustrators Lissa Treiman and Max Sarin would feature in this collection, with their work and contribution appearing together.

Using the character development from where the previous volume and issues left off, this develops the arcs and the world overall. It’s fun once again, really making the most of its concept, while allowing the world the characters inhabit to grow in the process. There’s a real sense of energy running throughout, ensuring the story continually flows effortlessly from page to page.

As a series it’s highly accessible, being easy to pick up and get into, making for some addictive reading that’s then equally difficult to put down. Creating a rich and varied world, the characters really leave a lasting impression upon the reader as they get know them fully. This is something that clearly John Allison clearly excels at as an author, knowing how to craft his characters well.

Looking to find themselves further at university, the three girls, Susan, Esther, and Daisy, all continue to explore the world around them. They aim to make it through to Spring in one piece, navigating university, along with the many characters they meet along the way. Dealing with an array of different events, including holiday balls, boys, academia and home-town rivals, they find this may be more difficult than they initially anticipated. What will they discover along the way? Can they make it through to Spring? Where will they find themselves when they get there?

Giant Days Volume Three
Published through the ‘BOOM! Box’ publishing outlet too, this would come out in 2016 on the 11th of October. There’d be fourteen volumes in total, with ‘Extra Credit’ featuring a collection of short-stories, while this volume would feature issues nine to twelve. Along with Max Sarin and Lissa Treiman as illustrators, this would also feature Jim Campbell working as illustrator. Featuring more humorous stories from the three friends at university, it takes a further look at their lives and adventures there.

The Giant Days Series
It’s easy to see how this became such a popular series, as well as winning the awards that it did for the duration of it print run. Working with ‘Boom! Box’ studios, it’s fast become a classic series, clearly showing the true potential of the comics medium and what it can deliver. With more and more readers discovering the series everyday, it appears to have a legacy that will continue for quite some time to come.
