Glass & Steele series by C.J. Archer
Author C. J. Archer pens the “Glass and Steele” series of young adult fantasy novels. The series began publication in the year 2016, when “The Watchmaker’s Daughter” was published.

The series is a historical fantasy mystery series that is set in Victorian England. It should be read in order and is appropriate for teenagers.

The series stars India Steele and Matthew Glass. Matthew has a watch that rejuvenates him when he is ill. Together, the two solve mysteries after India takes a job with him.

It is set in a Victorian era world where magic exists, however it is inherited and is misunderstood and practiced in secret by people that can enchant different objects. The normal people fear these magical people and do anything in their power to stop them..

“The Watchmaker’s Daughter” is the first novel in the “Glass and Steele” series and was released in the year 2016. India Steele is quite desperate. Her fiance stole her inheritance, her dad is dead, and nobody is willing to hire her, despite the years she spent working for her watchmaker dad. Certainly the other watchmakers in London are frightened of India. Poor, alone, and at the end of her tether, she takes up employment with the one person that will takes her in. One mysterious guy from America. One that has an odd watch that rejuvenates him when he is sick.

Matthew Glass has to find a certain watchmaker, but isn’t telling India why just any watchmaker won’t work. Nor will he tell her what his job is back home, and how he is able to afford to stay in a house on one of London’s very best streets. She reads about this American outlaw known as the Dark Rider showing up in England, she thinks Mr. Glass could be the fugitive. When danger comes knocking on their door, she is sure of it. However if she notifies the authorities, she will surely find herself unemployed and homeless once more. And she’ll also have betrayed the man that saved her life, too.

With just a dash of romance, quite the intriguing mystery, and a cast of quirky characters, this is the beginning of a thrilling new series from a fantastic author.

“The Mapmaker’s Apprentice” is the second novel in the “Glass and Steele” series and was released in the year 2016. This apprentice from the Mapmakers’ Guild vanishes, India and Matt are hired to locate him. They go undercover as a married couple, and learn that not everybody at the guild is as they appear, and this lad’s unearthly maps caused suspicion, fear, and jealousy.

With one of the apprentice’s magic maps in their possession, they have to use their wits and India’s fledgling and untested magic to locate him. However the more they investigate, the more sinister plots they start to learn about. Including this connection between the Watchmakers’ and Mapmakers’ Guilds, as well as this ancient magical treasure that is buried under the streets of London.

While foes come closer and the net of suspicion widens, it isn’t just the apprentice’s life that is in danger, but also Matt’s is. Somebody is willing to go to great lengths in order to prevent him from learning the name of the guy able to fix the watch that keeps him alive. Great lengths for sure.

“The Apothecary’s Poison” is the third novel in the “Glass and Steele” series and was released in the year 2017. Matt sees a newspaper report on a medical miracle, he and India go looking for Dr. Hale in hopes that he is more magical doctor than a miracle worker and will be able to lead both of them to Chronos. However Hale ends up being an apothecary magician that is keen on educating the public about magic.

They quickly forget their disappointment at not locating Chronos when Hale is murdered and Matt is one of the suspects. With Sheriff Payne, Matt’s nemesis, influencing the case’s investigating detective, Matt and India have to catch the real killer, or risk his freedom, and his life, ultimately. Time runs out while hunting for this killer that is capable of turning medicine into poison with just a magic spell, and continue looking for Chronos. It is a search that has to be a successful one before Matt’s malfunctioning watch quits altogether.

“The Magician’s Diary” is the fourth novel in the “Glass and Steele” series and was released in the year 2017. Matt and India believed each of their problems would be over once they located Chronos. However the watch magician brings along with him just as many questions as he does answers. Not to mention a load of trouble. In order to fix Matt’s magic watch, they have to locate an old diary that used to belong to a doctor magician that was murdered decades prior.

However while the reason for India’s oddly strong magic is revealed, she is interested to draw other magicians out in the open, but Matt wants to hide her magic in order to protect her. India’s plan backfires, and Matt’s plan is ruined. Danger ends up coming to their door.

“The Convent’s Secret” is the fifth novel in the “Glass and Steele” series and was released in the year 2018. Matt and India, to track down the one man that can fix the magic in Matt’s watch, are led to this convent where the nuns are willing to do anything they have to in order to keep their secrets private. Does that include murder? India and Matt have to learn the truth behind the disappearance of the mother superior and two babies given to her care some years ago. However sometimes, the truth is painful and the exposure of it could have some lethal consequences.

With his magic watch starting to slow down, Matt needs all the help that India and his friends can offer him before time finally runs out on him. However his nemesis will stop at nothing to bring his downfall about, including rock Matt’s family with a scandal that could ruin them, as well as India and Matt’s chance of happiness.
