“Grant Stevens” otherwise known as the Navy SEAL Grant Stevens series is a series of military thrillers by Jamie Fredric the former military officer turned novelist. Jamie Fredric was a military officer that used to be a Navy SEAL before he retired to become a bestselling novelist. The first novel he published in the series was “Mission Critical” that came out in 2010 to much popularity among military thriller fans. He soon followed it up with “Warning Order” to make for a very popular series that is still ongoing. Even though Jamie retired early, he maintains an active interest in the army and runs a very active blog pertaining to the activities of the military. He gets most of his material from the stories of brave military heroes that were involved in complex operations across the globe and from his personal experiences in such missions as a Navy SEAL. Fredric writes novels full of political and military intrigues in a style that has often been compared to Tom Clancy. A lover of films such as “James Bond”, “Enemy at the Gates” and book such as the “Bourne” series, “Flight of the Intruder” and the “Clancy” novels, it is no wonder that most of his novels come with a combinatiuon of action and intrigue common to his favorites. He writes an expertly woven plot that is believable and well designed which has made him one of the most popular military thriller writers of the new millenium.

The lead character of the “Grant Stevens” series of novels is Grant Stevens, a Navy SEAL and intelligence officer that works alongside Liutenant Joe Adler on a range of covert operation and critical missions. The character made his first appearance in the first novel of the series “Mission Critical”. Grant works for the Black Ops Division of the Naval Investigative Service as intelligence officer and Navy SEAL. Stevens is often consulted by the Joint Chiefs and the secretary of defense on his opinion on military buildups and what to do about it. How work often involves confronting the United States old nemesis the KGB and emerging threats from the likes of China. While he is a competent intelligence officer and SEAL, Grant has never been one to follow orders blindly, instead following his gut feeling when he thinks he may be right. His work often takes him and his team behind enemy lines where betrayal, kidnapping, and murder are the order of the day. But Grant has been in the intelligence services long enough, which means he has loads of friends amongst the Russians, Chinese, Japanese, and practically any major intelligence service around the world. With such a widespread network of assets, he often manages to get out of the tightest situations that may doom any other SEAL. While never one to be emotional, he has exceptional loyalty to his men and will go to great lengths to ensure they are protected from unnecessary danger, even if it means that he makes the ultimate sacrifice.

The Grant Stevens series of novels are military thrillers that follow the politcal intrigues of military intelligence missions. The series has Grant Stevens lead a team of intelligence officers that go after terrorists, rogue enemy soldiers, rebels in the Far East, and Russian intelligence among others. Resting in the hands of a small team of SEALS is the American public or their colleagues whose lives depend on the instinct and training of the SEALS if they are to survive. Similar to the Clancy books but having a better characterization and plot, the novel come with the excelelnt descriptions of top secret weapons of the US military that Grant and his team uses in their job. The team typically has to deal with infiltration, frustration, and surprise attacks that sap the strength of the most battle hardened tropps in the quest to free their colleagues trapped behind enemy lines, or captured by enemy troops. However, the most important job they do is to protect the public from devastating plots from nuclear and terrorist attacks. The Grant Stevens series are enthralling novels with narratives of precise and silentmissions on aircraft carriers, land and sea that are struck quickly, silently and decisively to leave the enemy’s sailors incapacitates, dying and dead. Well designed plans sometimes go awry and when they do, hold on to your seat, it may just become rough.

“Mission Critical” the first novel of the Grant Stevens novel is a thrilling story of a potential conflict between the Russian and Chinese governments versus the Americans and their allies. It is set in the Cold War era where US intelligence just intercepted a series of messages indicating that the Chinese are massing troops on the South Korean border with the help of the Russians. South Korea requests the United States to intervene to stop the imminent invasion, and the US respond sby sending the USS John Preston into the Sea of Japan. The group of warships includes the most sophisticated and modern destroyer, the USS Bronson that comes with unimaginable power from its satelite based weapons system. Grant Stevens the squadron commander intelligence officer and Navy SEAL is in charge of the Black Ops divison of the NIS. The Naval Intelligence Service commander asks him to meet with the Joint Chiefs and the Secretary of Defense. His review of the intelligence indicates that the buildup of troops is a ruse intended to lure the Bronson into a trap where the communists can blow it up and sink it. Teaming up with Senior Chief Adler an old friend, Grant faces up to Russian commandos even as he tries to find a communist mole in his ranks. He needs to ensure the safety of the Bronson, and while at it get to the root of a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the heart and soul of the US Navy.

In “Warning Order”, Grant Stevens the Navy SEAL Captain just decided that he is going to follow his gut insticnt yet again and not follow the What, Where, How, Who, and When order of a Warning order. Working together with Joe Adler his Liutenant, he needs to stop a dark conspiracy to assasinate top ranking Russian government heads. His mission will see him go behind the iron curtain, where he will have to face up to betrayal, kidnapping, and murder. Lucky for him, he has Grigori Moshenko a long standing friend in the KGB to help him and his team complete their mission. But it will not be easy as the conspiracy is deep in the Kremlin, the fortress of power of the Soviet Union. It is an excellent novel with an intriguing plot full of twists and turns and action that will have the reader guessing right to the very end. Jamie excellently balances dialogue, description and action to make for a pacy novel that would rival almost any other military thriller out htere. He also does a good job desribing and explaining the technical operation of explosvies, mission type, and parachute drops among others, making it easy to wrap ones head around the story even if one is not very familiar with military jargon.
