About Greg Iles:

Greg Iles is an American writer who was born in 1960. He was actually born in Germany because his Father was a doctor and was in charge of the US Embassy Clinic. He was raised in Mississippi and managed to graduate from the University of Mississippi in 1980.

Despite his later success as a novelist, he actually started out in a rock band called Frank Scarlett. In the band, he excelled as a guitarist and a singer-songwriter. He only quit the band once he had married and needed to settle down and make more money. That is when he turned his hand to writing and began working on his first novel.

First Novel

Iles’s first novel, Spandau Phoenix, was published in 1993 and was an instant hit. It was his first book and it got on the New York Times best sellers list. This is quite an achievement for a writer who started out writing song lyrics. Spandau Phoenix was about the Nazi-war criminal Rudolph Hess.

He was prisoner number 7 and the police found his diary shortly after his death. This lead them to believe he was a spy and they were interested in a number of flights he made to the UK. The novel is filled with twists about double agents, spies and secret alliances. A young lady is badly assaulted to get the diary and readers must continue to the end of the book to see why the diary is so sought after.

Success

Iles is a writer who has seen unmatched success. He has written 13 novels and all of them have ended up on the bestsellers list. His 2009 novel, Devil’s Punchbowl actually reached number one on the list. He is very respected among other authors and he continues to write today. His books have been translated into a number of languages and they are published in more than 35 countries, a feat that he is very proud of.

Movie Success?

In 2002, Iles wrote the script for a film called 24-Hours. It was based on his novel by the same name. By the time the movie was released it had been re-written three times and the name had been changed to Trapped.

This was something he didn’t mind since the movie was getting confused with a TV show called 24. Iles didn’t really like the finished movie, but he had enjoyed working with the actors on the set, so he came away with a positive experience from it.

The Devil’s Punchbowl

This book is his most successful, reaching number one on the New York Times best sellers list. In this novel, Penn Cage has returned to his hometown and he is set to face his most dangerous case yet.

This book introduces the readers to a town filled with depravity, sex and a lot of corruption. The level of the corruption is revealed to Cage when his best friend tries to tell him what is happening and is brutally murdered.

Car Accident

Iles was involved in a car accident in 2011 and he was badly injured. The car accident resulted in the loss of part of his right leg. It was during the recovery from this accident that he wrote a new trilogy of books. These novels are going to feature his character Penn Cage and the first book entitled, Natchez burning will be published early in 2014.

Who is Penn Cage?

Penn Cage is a prosecutor who tries his hand at writing. He first appears in Iles novel The Quiet Game and then recurs in the novels Turning Angel and the Deil’s Punchbowl. The character also makes an appearance in other novels, but he does not return until the new trilogy.

The Quiet Game

In this novel, Penn Cage is introduced when he is on holiday with his daughter. They are trying to get over the death of their Wife and Mother and they decide to spend some time with Cage’s parents in Mississippi. It is also revealed that he has made an enemy of the Deputy Director of the FBI due to a case he prosecuted and whilst he is home he gets involved with a murder case. The father of an old flame is the prime suspect.

What does the future hold for Iles?

Due to his accident, Iles did take time out from communicating with his fans so he could recover and find himself again. Readers of his webpage will know that he has returned and has started writing again. He is planning on updating his page a lot more and he has pages on Facebook and Twitter, so that he can keep in touch with everyone. He has recently moved to a new Publisher called William Morrow and they are going to be publishing his books in the future.

They are set to release an e-book that is going to be offered for a minimal price, which will set the stage for his new book and update the readers about the character Penn Cage. As mentioned above, Iles has written a new trilogy, which is slated for a 2014 release, and he has since co-authored a novel called Hard Listening with other members of his band. It was released in 2013 and gives readers an insight into the lives of him and his band members.

The Rock Bottom Remainders

The above title is the name of his band. The band is made up of 9 members, all of which are famous authors, including Stephen King and Matt Groenig. That is why they were able to join together and write a success book about their lives.

Social Media

Iles is one of the few authors who like to keep in touch with the readers. He encourages the fans to email him and stay in touch with him because he thinks writing is a very solitary profession. He has spoke about times when he felt very lonely and the fan mail was the only contact that he had with anyone.

On his webpage, he has promised his fans that he will be posting sample chapters; video messages and he might even have some music tracks available from his band. It seems like he is over the worst now and he is working hard to get his life back on track.

I have read your books for several years now and am really impressed. Your descriptions of the places in Natchez are so spot on that when I took the tour in Natchez all the places they showed me were exactly like I imagined. There are very few authors that write so descriptively that you can actually see how something looked in your imagination that looked exactly like I imagined. You are very thorough in your writings and I love your books. As long as you keep writing I will keep reading. Can’t wait for the next book.

I have read the book Natchez burning but have not read the other Penn Cage novels. Which book should I read next? It was not until I researched the second book in the trilogy that I found there were Penn Cage books before Natchez burning. Should I continue w/ the trilogy and readh book #5 or go back to book #1?

Most people I know were able to read the entire trilogy and loved it without having read the previous ones. So I would just continue to read the trilogy 🙂

Read Natchez Burning, The Bone Tree and Mississippi Blood and they ought to be required reading for all College History Majors including Phd candidates. The series was marvelous, hopefully you will continue the series or start a new one just like it.
