A character named Katelyn is seen as a depressed teen, regretting her miserable at one time. The next time, she is seen lying on a stainless steel slab with frosted skin and glassy eyes. No one knows the cause of her death. At some other place down the street, a pair of twins named Taylor and Haley Ryan are seen trapped in the encroaching darkness of winter.
They are frightened by the news of Katelyn’s death and realize that they very much entwined in the Empty Coffin, which is circulating evil. Just as they are wondering about the truth about the death of Katelyn, they are pushed by an unknown force to uncover the truth.
They believe it to be the soul of Katelyn, who is helping them to escape the Empty Coffin. Hayley and Taylor are determined to find out the truth about the culprits and the victims using their wits and twin-sense intelligence. As they proceed with the investigation, they come across even more disturbing dark truths. The novel was based on a true crime involving cyber-bullying that resulted in the death of a 13-year old girl, Megan Meier.
