H.L. Burke
H. L. Burke was born in a small town located in north central Oregon, and spent most of her childhood surrounded by farm animals and trees and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Narnia and Middle Earth to keep her company, she also became an incurable romantic.
Since she has an addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to the next, being at times completely obsessed with various movies, books, or television series, with Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars each taking their turns. She has since grown to be what she considers to be a well-rounded connoisseur of geek culture.
She married her high school crush, who is now a US Marine, she has moved many times during her adult life, however believes that home is wherever her two daughters, husband, and all her pets are.
Burke’s “Nyssa Glass Steampunk” series won the 2016 Realm Award for Young Adult Fiction.
“Dragon’s Curse” is the first novel in the “Dragon and the Scholar” series and was released in the year 2014. Shannon Macaulay, a young healer and scholar, is going on her first assignment fresh out of the Academy, and gets summoned to the struggling kingdom of Regone to see to the wounds of the crippled yet young king.
When the unwanted attentions of an aggressive knight and a hated dragon’s sudden appearance turn her world on end, she figures she’ll take matters into her own hands even if doing so proves to be dangerous.
Finding herself oddly drawn to the company of Gnaw, the dragon, she must force herself out of her comfortable world of books and botany to come to the help of her unexpected ally in an odd kingdom, which is cursed by a fateful encounter with a dragon and a beloved prince’s loss. Cann she possibly learn to set aside her fears, and possibly sacrifice her deepest desires, all to help out a friend and restore one family?
“Dragon’s Debt” is the second novel in the “Dragon and the Scholar” series and was released in the year 2014. Shannon and Ewan, the Dragon-Prince, have been traveling together for a year when their blissful companionship gets interrupted by a cryptic message from Martin, their friend. He tells them that Edmond needs them, and to come to Westshire.
Ewan, who is drawn to his brother’s aid, finds that he is hunting this elusive monster: a winged beast that abducts young women and robs them of their memories. Its recent victim is the Princess Brighid of Westshire, the same girl that Edmond has fallen for recently, much to the disapproval of her temperamental dad, King Riley, and her stoic brother, Prince Ryan.
Ewan’s determined to rescue his brother’s beloved, no matter what it costs. However when Ryan’s eyes fall on Shannon, the dragon knows that the cost may be much greater than he’s willing to pay.
“Dragon’s Rival” is the third novel in the “Dragon and the Scholar” series and was released in the year 2014. Ewan, having abandoned his family and friends and taken to the skies, is hiding in the Wilderlands, away from all humans. But, one unexpected attempt on his life and a warning from another dragon lead him to suspecting that not all’s right in Regone.
Ewan goes back to his homeland to go to his brother’s wedding and find the source of the bounty that is on his head. Once there the dragon prince finds that Ryan Westshire has been using his absence to court Lady Shannon.
With the unknown forces working to undermine his brother’s throne and his own heart being torn between his own love for Shannon and his desire to see her be happy, he has to choose once and for all: is he a man or a dragon?
“Dragon’s Bride” is the fourth novel in the “Dragon and the Scholar” series and was released in the year 2014. Ewan has promised Shannon, his beloved, that he’s going to become a man again or die trying. Now he’s going to do anything he can in order to make good on his promise.
With the help of Martin, his scholarly friend, Ewan consults the great Dragon Queen Harviss, who offers up a unique solution to him: go back to the past to find Ewan’s Fey ancestor and beg her to help. Martin and Ewan, while leaving Shannon behind, go to a dangerous past and fall right into the clutches of one powerful Fey queen.
At the same time, Shannon finds she is alone and with child. Unable to sit still without her husband, she joins up with Ryan of Westshire in the prince’s desperate quest to find King Riley, his young son. However, somebody will see Ryan dead long before allowing him to locate his lost child.
Can Shannon figure out a way to reunite Ryan with his son? Or is this attempt cost her not just her life, but the life of her unborn kid? Are Ewan and Martin going to find the cure that they are seeking out or are they going to remain stuck in the past and Ewan separated from his bride forever?
“Nyssa Glass and the House of Mirrors” is the first novel in the “Nyssa Glass” series and was released in the year 2016. Nyssa Glass, who is a reformed cat burglar turned electrician’s apprentice, settled into a life repairing radio sets and videophones.
But when her past comes to pay a call on her, she finds herself being forced into doing one last job. Nobody has entered into Professor Dalhart’s secluded mansion in close to a decade now, at least nobody that’s returned to talk about their experience.
If she wants to ensure her own freedom, she is going to brave all the booby trapped hallways and the mechanized maids. She has got skills, however this house has got more than its fair share of secrets. While she steps into these cobwebbed halls lined with their dusty mirrors, she must wonder, is the House of Mirrors truly abandoned?
