H.P. Mallory is American novelist of paranormal romance and urban fantasy novels. She is famously known as the author of best-selling selling Jolie Wilkins and Dulcie O’Neil series. The author began as an indie author, and her success came almost “overnight” and made her way to become USA Today and New York Times bestselling author. Mallory admits that she is a diehard fan of paranormals and loves watching the marathons of Twilight Zone, and besides this, she also likes traveling and has lived in both Scotland and England.
Mallory became a published author in 2010 when her first book in Dulcie O’Neil series, To Kill a Warlock was published. Later the same year, she published Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble which marked the beginning of her second novel series, Jolie Wilkins.
To Kill A Warlock
In the first book in Dulcie O’Neil series, the author introduces Dulcie O’Neil, a fairy, she is not the type you will find playing in the garden instead she is a regulator- a law enforcement operative who guards the creatures of the Netherworld and deters them from causing havoc to the mortal world. When a warlock is brutally murdered, and Dulcie was the last person to see him alive, she must find out what exactly happened to the wizard before she becomes the killer’s next victim or she is deported to Netherworld.
Meet Knight Vander, the handsome investigator sent from Netherworld to partner with Dulcie in solving the case and find the killer. Between confronting her attraction to her spouse, repelling the advances of a powerful vampire and keeping a malicious demon in check, Dulcie has got her hands full. As the number of dead person increases, she finds herself fighting dark magic, exploring in S&M clubs and facing the greatest betrayal.
The first novel in the series is an interesting read, and it is well crafted. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this book is the characters especially the main character Dulcie. The general tone of the novel is intriguing and comfortable while the first person perspective narration had a conversation light style. Dulcie is a likable character; she is smart funny and does what she does to her level best. In some way, the main character is also vulnerable like anyone else, as she possesses insecurity or two. You will love the minor quirks about her, for instance, by day she is a tough cop while by night she is an aspiring romance writer.
The novel also features a variety of supernatural species such as vampires, fairies, werewolves, elves, trolls, goblins and many others that you have probably never heard of before. The mystery in the novel is well executed with some twists and turns while the pacing is excellent and steadily throughout. If you like some bits of romance in a tale of supernatural species, then this novel is ideal for you. There is a love triangle between our main character, Dulcie that includes, a vampire named Bram, her boss Quillan and Knight. The romance is satisfying, as Dulcie admits that she shares some sort of attraction to each of them.
A Tale of Two Goblins
A Tale of Two Goblins, the second novel in the series takes us back into the action with the most adored fairy Dulcie. The first book in the series ended after she quit Association for Netherworld Creatures after the outcome of the last case that she was working on. But now she has agreed to serve as a consultant for the A.N.S hoping that she will get some time to heal the backlash she suffered in the first series installment and also get more time to work on her current novel.
Knight approaches her about a case that is connected to a possible Dreamstalker who has caused several victims unconscious and trapped them between life and death. When Dulcie discovers she has a connection to all the victims, she is worried that this act might be personal and immediately she agrees to help. Over the course of this case, Dulcie will have to make some tough choices and always stay one step ahead of the Dreamstalker if she is to survive.
The second novel in this urban fantasy series is full of suspense and action just like the first book in the series. The events take some twisted turns when Dulcie is faced with some tough choices to save the people held captive by the Dreamstalker.
Great Hexpectations
In Great Hexpectations, the third novel in the series: after Dulcie’s partner get pinned for a crime that he did not commit, Dulcie knows well that it is all her fault since she did not arrest the wanted criminal responsible and she will stop at nothing until the real truth is uncovered. But what Dulcie isn’t planning is a trip to the Netherworld where chaos is the order of the day.
Between fighting the approaches of a strange vampire, safeguarding herself from her enemies and proving the purity of the man who would sacrifice himself for her, Dulcie’s trip to the Netherworld will not be a downhill task, and her skills and wits will be put to the test.
In the third novel, Dulcie has only one goal in her mind, to save her handsome boyfriend Knight from a crime that he did not commit. He has been taken into Netherworld, a place where all the creatures of the world are bound for trial because of his confession that he let a criminal escape just to cover up for his girlfriend, Dulcie. In her journey to Netherworld, Dulcie is accompanied by the handsome vampire, Bram as her escort and maybe take the blame for the crime.
But things get some twisted turn, and now she will have to save both Bram and her boyfriend Knight. Will she finally save both the man she loves and her escort as well? Or will she ultimately fail and be trapped in Netherland for eternity?
Dulcie O’Neil series is a wonderful one, the novels are quite addictive, and the main character Dulcie is quite engaging heroine whose inner dialogue will crack you one minute and get you thing the next minute. She is a character who will keep you on your toes, her co-workers and friends are vital parts of this series and thus make it a lot of fun.
