Previously working as an editor for ‘One Story Magazine’, she has already established a name for herself as an extremely versatile and highly adept author of contemporary and modern fiction. Not only that, but she has gone on to become a leading voice in her own right, and one that is respected by both her many peers and contemporaries alike. With a clear understanding of her craft and what it is that she is trying to say, she always manages to articulate her message in a clear and accessible manner, something which she achieves through her universal themes and well drawn characters. Winning awards for her work she is clearly one to watch in the years to come, leaving a legacy that will remain unparalleled for some time yet, as she has created a career and body of work that many other up-and-coming writers will only aspire to.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up in Salem in the United States where she was born and raised, Hannah Tinti was to become an exceptional writer in time, as she harnessed her passion for both reading and writing from an early age. Harboring a love of the written word she was always a voracious reader too, continually looking for new and exciting ideas to help take her and her work forwards. Attending and graduating from Connecticut College, she later went on to New York University whereby she gained a Master’s Degree, something which really helped propel her writing career.

Keeping herself immersed in the world of literature throughout her life, she held a series of professions following higher education, all the while focused on her main goal of becoming a writer full-time. This would include working in bookstores and at magazines, all of which helped provide her with the necessary grounding and materials needed to build her writing career up from. Now currently living in Brooklyn in New York City she continues to write to this very day where she’s celebrated as one of the foremost influential writers there, with her writing career one of the most successful of her generation.

Writing Career

Bringing out her first novel in 2008 she made her debut into the world of long-form fiction with her novel ‘The Good Thief’ which was extremely well received upon its release. Prior to this she wrote the book ‘Animal Crackers’ which she brought out in 2004, which was a collection of her shorter, but equally well loved, stories, as she made the transition to novel form with ease. Winning awards for her work she is not without acclaim either, as she received the ‘New York Times Notable Book of the Year Award’ upon the release of her first novel, along with being a runner-up for the ‘PEN/Hemingway Award’ for her short-story collection.

Her novel ‘The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley’, which was released in 2017, has been optioned for a big-screen adaptation too by the director Matt Reeves who is all set to transfer it to the cinema. With numerous interviews, such as ones for NPR and ‘Aspen Public Radio’, she can also be found at a variety of different events promoting both her work and her craft. This is something that’s expected to continue for some time to come on into the foreseeable future, as her writing career grows from strength-to-strength.

The Good Thief

Brought out through the ‘Dial Press’ publishing label, this was the first long-form novel from Hannah Tinti as an author, thus establishing her name as a writer. Initially released on the 26th of August in 2008 this was well received by both the critics and the general public alike, as it explored a number of different themes, as well as constructing a well crafted mystery too. Combining suspense and intrigue it draws readers in through its central character, as she resonates with the readers keeping them engaged and always guessing until the finale.

After being abandoned at Saint Anthony’s orphanage for young boys, Ren is twelve years old and trying to find out why he is missing his left hand and where it went. With no parents to call his own he desperately wants to know who they are, this being another mystery in his life, as he dreads the day he will be sent out into the world all alone. That’s when Benjamin Nab arrives telling him he is in actual fact his long-lost brother, followed by getting him set free from the orphanage and taking him across country into an underworld of petty thievery and desperate scam artists. Is Benjamin really who he says he is? Does he truly hold the key to Ren’s past? Who really is the good thief?

The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley

Once again brought out through the ‘Dial Press’ publishing label, this was the second title to be released by Hannah Tinti, with it coming out on the 28th of March in 2017. With the rights to the story now having been optioned to be made into a major motion picture, this is perhaps one of Tinti’s most well received novels to date. Working as a thriller it’s filled with suspense and mystery, something which Tinti has become extremely adept with as an author, as she maintains the pace throughout constantly.

Moving to Olympus in Massachusetts with Loo his teenage daughter, Samuel Hawley has spent a great many years on the run after the death of his late wife. It is here that he finds work as a fisherman, whilst his daughter attempts to fit into the high-school there, all the while growing ever more curious about what actually happened to her mother and how she died. That’s when Hawley’s criminal past comes back to haunt them both along with the twelve scars across his body, as they make a reckoning with the past that spreads back through time and all across America to Alaska. Will they ever be able to settle into a normal life? Who is after them? What is the truth behind the twelve lives of Samuel Hawley?
