In this story, readers will meet the main character of Quantum Hughes. Hughes has a unique problem that many would not be able to relate to on a literal level. That’s because the very fabric of his life has been snared, and his existence is permanently parked on repeat.
Quantum is in The Loop, trapped in this dreamworld that is all about the virtual entertainment lifestyle. He’s caught in a glitch and he’s doing whatever he can to try and get out of it. Until he does, the glitch is going to make sure that he lives through a day on repeat. Naturally, Quantum is desperate to break the hold, struggling to try and get away from the glitch.
It appears that change may be on the horizon, however, when he gets a message. The mysterious contact is from Frances Euphoria, apparently a woman. She would be the first human that he’s communicated with in actual years. But who knows if she can even help him? She might be a human player, but it’s not like those are actually easy to come by for Quantum.
His situation is precarious, but in the end, Frances does show up. The only problem is that her arrival seems to have prefaced the arrival of others in The Loop. A ‘murder guild’ that calls itself the Reapers start to show up, and it isn’t in Quantum’s imagination– they really do seem to be out to get him. Their goal appears to be to either capture the repeating man or kill him outright. Neither is an inviting prospect for Quantum.
He’s been trapped here for so long, and starts to realize that the virtual world itself is attempting to do all that is in its power to keep him from getting out. Why does The Loop appear to want him to stay so bad? It’s anyone’s guess whether the motivation is practical, profitable, or personal. All that Quantum knows and understands at this point is that he is running out of the time that he needs.
He’s been trying to break out forever, with no success. Now Quantum has more pressure on himself than ever to try and get out of this world before the Reapers get to him first. With these tough guys on his tail, it’s either going to be his victory or his unfortunate defeat. Meanwhile, he can’t help but consider the identity of Frances Euphoria.
This mysterious woman appeared to him seemingly out of nowhere, but could her existence and identity be even more valuable and important than he realized? How much does she know about his time here trapped in The Loop, and what does she want with him or this world? Could she be aligned with the malevolent guild that’s trying to track Quantum down?
Quantum knows this is his biggest chance to get out of this virtual landscape for good. Everything’s depending on it. Can he get to freedom and break out from this dream world into the real one? He’s in the middle of a mad dash to liberty, and whether he’ll be able to escape this nightmare is anyone’s guess. Find out for yourself by picking up a copy of The Feedback Loop, first in an exciting and innovative science fiction series from Harmon Cooper!
Steampunk Is Dead is the second novel in The Feedback Loop fictional series and the sequel to the first. If you enjoyed the creative first story in this series, be sure to check out this installment and get back in on the action.
Quantum Hughes never expected to actually get out of the world that he was trapped in. But it turns out that having to adjust to the way the ‘real world’ is may prove just as challenging. The stakes were high, and he got out. Now he should be paying attention to his recovery. But instead, he decides to do something different.
Quantum joins Frances Euphoria on an assignment. It will take them to Steam, a world hosted online, as they search for a Proxima Developer. But when Quantum does something, it may just cause the world to come at him like cells attacking a foreign body.
He also has to contend with the return of the Reapers, who follow him to Steam with the intention of tracking him down or possibly killing him. Quantum has to either stay and fight or try to find assistance in The Loop. There’s reality, Steam, and The Loop. Can Quantum succeed in getting out alive? Read this sequel to find out!
