Heidi Swanson is an author of cookbooks and blogger at 101cookbooks.com. She has always believed in the power of home cooked meals, natural foods, plants and sharing a table for a meal with your loved ones.

Swanson has lived in San Francisco for more than a decade even though she does travel a lot. She recently moved to Los Angeles where she managed to snag herself a community garden plot. She also has a feisty and cute cocker spaniel named Polly that often makes it into her cooking videos.

The genesis of Heidi Swanson’s culinary career comes down to love, family and place. She was brought up on the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains between the coast and San Jose. It is the place that has now come to be known as Silicon Valley though they never thought of it as such when she was young.
During the 80s and 90s, the locale she lived in was something of a combination of the United Nations meets Agrestic town. Her high school has people of all religious, ethnic and socio economic backgrounds but she loved it. It was during this time that she got to taste all manner of dishes as she visited her Vietnamese and Iranian friends houses where she ate flavorful and fragrant foods.

Over the years, many of her neighbors would work for the likes of HP, Atari and Apple and there was much optimism about the future. Her father grew up at Hunters Point housing project in San Francisco and moved to Mountain View when he was a teenager.

He worked hard and eventually owned an insurance agency. Her mother was the daughter of an Idaho forest ranger that lived in beautiful outposts during her childhood and teenage years before she started working as a medical technologist.

Heidi Swanson never thought that she would ever work in the culinary world. In college, she studied media, photography and art and soon after graduation she got a job for a magazine. But she always felt like her life was out of balance and that she needed a reboot. She decided to quit her job and become a freelancer which gave her more time to engage in her hobby of cooking.

By this time she was in her late twenties and had all manner of cookbooks that she browsed even though she did very little cooking. One day she decided to install one of the earlier blogging platforms on her computer and began recording her recipes in the form of a journal. The journal also served to incentivise her to cook more.

At this time when everything in her life seemed to be in shambles following a recipe felt doable and centering. It was this creative exercise that planted the seed for her getting involved in the culinary community and a career writing cookbooks. She has learned a lot writing recipes and the culinary industry over more than a decade.

Besides her very popular blog she now has several cookbooks to her name. When she is not writing cookbooks or cooking she loves to travel, take long walks, do yoga, have long baths, eat vibrant food, take in the fresh air and drink herbal teas.
