Knowing exactly what it is that they both want to say, they work well together, creating confident and intelligent novels, inflected with their ideas of faith and love, whilst also being true to the times that they’re set within. Not only that, but they have a shared gift for building suspense, allowing the reader to be carried along with the story, keeping them upon the edges-of-their-seats. Creating a variety of series too, the both of them have effectively worked together, creating some much loved franchises that have been running for quite some time now. One particular series is that of their ‘Heirs of Acadia’ series of historical novels that follow on from the the previous franchise, the ‘Song of Acadia’ series, which Davis Bunn originally wrote alongside the inspirational Canadian author Janette Oke. Carrying on, this becomes its own series, as it functions as an almost separate entity, whilst remaining true to the aims and the intentions of the original collection. Set within the early 1800’s, this manages to capture essence of high-society at the time within its American Washington D.C. setting. Incorporating historical events with romantic entanglements, it takes place within and around Acadia, looking at what life was like at that time. With a whole score of readers worldwide, these are appreciated by audiences from all across the globe, thanks to the universality of their themes and ideas, something that will continue for quite some time to come.

Running for over five books, this series manages to incorporate a large period of time into the core basis of its main arc and narrative. Starting out in 2004 it begun with the novel ‘The Solitary Envoy’, later being followed up by ‘The Innocent Libertine’ in the same year. The series later finished in 2007 with the title the ‘Falconer’s Quest’, which rounded off the entire saga, giving it a definite conclusion. Over the course of its entire run, it managed to incorporate a variety of different elements, as it shows America growing as a relatively young nation at the time, finding its own feet and independence. With a timeless quality to it, this is a series that will live on into the foreseeable future for quite some time to come yet.

The Solitary Envoy

Published through the ‘Bethany House Publishers’ outlet, this was to be the first in its series. Setting up the ‘Heirs of Acadia’ series, it manages to establish a new saga, whilst also remaining true to the original ‘Song of Acadia’ franchise.

Taking place in the early 1800s, this sees Erica Langston as a young girl being taught the ways of becoming a merchant by her father. Later Washington is taken under siege by the British, as her father is tragically killed, leaving her to ultimately fend for herself. Heading to England she finds herself attempting to request that the bank there pay her back for the damages caused by her father’s death, instead finding a new life filled with friends, family and faith. Will she be able to make a new life? Can she put the past behind her? What will become of her as she goes on the solitary envoy?

The Innocent Libertine

Brought out through the ‘Bethany House Publisher’ label once more, this continues on directly from the last. Published the same year in 2004, this manages to take the series forwards. It also remains true to the original, thus developing ‘Heirs of Acadia’ as a whole.

This time the setting is eighteenth century England, as the American protagonist Erica Langston finds herself attempting to navigate this exciting new world. Attempting to make a new life for herself among the courts, she finds that she must retain her faith and her passion for the world. Meeting the wealthy young Abigail here, she finds that this young woman wants to head to America indulging in the baser pleasures of life. Will she find her way? Can Erica remain true to her faith? What will become of the innocent libertine?

The Heirs of Acadia Series

Working on multiple levels, this is a series that will continue to find an audience for a long time to come, with more and more discovering it every day. Fun and engaging, both Bunns manage to articulate their ideas and beliefs on faith and love into one cohesive saga with a clear message.
