All writers are storytellers of a unique breed. Storytelling is an art, and authors are the creative and inventive artists. Novels are a form of art and regardless of what part of the world they are from, all authors have a talent for storytelling that is completely their own.

Helene Tursten Biography

Helene Tursten, a notable and accomplished Swedish novelist of Scandinavian crime fiction, was born in Goteborg, Sweden on February 17, 1954. Writing was not her first occupation, nor was it her fisrt profession. Before she became the famous and well-respected writer she is today, she worked as a nurse and then eventually as a dentist. Unfortunately, while working in the medical/dental profession, Tursten became ill and had to leave her job. While battling her illness, she began working as translator of medical articles.

(Helene Tursten’s books were all originally written and published in her Swedish native language and later translated to the English language. In this article, the English versions will be used when referring to her works.)

Helene Tursten’s Early Works:

In 1998, Helene Tursten published her very first novel that became: Detective Inspector Huss (The English Version was published in 2003) The main character of the book is named: Detective Inspector Irene Huss. Detective Huss became the main character in all of Tursten’s novels from then on.

The first book of Helene Tursten’s series of novels, is set up as somewhat of an introduction to the main character Director Inspector Irene Huss. In this introductory story, Inspector Huss, the main character, is stationed in Goteborg, Sweden.

The book stars the Detective Huss and her colleagues who work in the Violent Crimes Unit at their precinct. One night, they are called out to investigate the death of a wealthy man named von Knecht. The team of detectives eventually discovers that he was connected to the Swedish elite.
The suspense of the exciting crime novel begins with the onset of the Detective Team’s investigation into his death..

As the story progresses, the investigation into the brutal crime becomes an extremely complicated one. The motive and method for the murder are a huge mystery right from the start. However, the reader can pretty much guess which character in the story eventually turns out to be the primary culprit. However, the story still ends up having a very unexpected twist

Detective Huss and her team of intelligent and competent detectives waste no time tracing von Knecht’s life into a criminal underground involving both motorcycle gangs an drug dealing. Tursten then makes the case turn deadly again. A bomb blows up Von Knecht’s business office, and kills two more of the story’s characters. Detective Huss’ team face many struggles whilst attempting to discover a motive for all of the violence.
Huss herself starts feeling like von Knecht’s underworld connections and business connections have somewhow crossed at a very dangerous junction. She begins to worry that more killings will be following if she and her team is unable to stop the vicious perpetrator soon.

A large portion of the novel’s successful storyline is attributable to Tursten’s detailed, step-by-step rendering of the difficult, yet uncompromising detective work that eventually leads up to the exciting climax and resolution.

In 1999, Tursten published her second book in her Detective Irene Huss series that became Night Rounds.

In this second part of Tursten’s Swedish crime series the main character, Irene Huss,’ continues her work as a Detective Inspector with the Violent Crimes Unit in Goteborg, Sweden. In this story, however, she is a former Ju-Jitsu champion, and has teenaged twin daughters. She is also married to of a successful chef. Night Rounds proves to be a gripping follow-up to Detective Inspector Huss.

The plot of this second story begins with Detective Inspector Irene Huss tackling a mind-boggling challenge of complex human relationships and disentangling wandering ghosts, all in order to solve a uniquely intriguing case.

The story begins in a small private hospital run by a man named Dr. Sverker Lowander. One night a blackout occurs while there is only one doctor and two nurses on duty. The blackout causes a respirator ICU room to fail, and for some unknown reason, the generator fails to turn on. Later, one of the 2 nurses ends up missing and the other is eventually found to be dead.

Tursten’s second novel has interesting and intriguing plot strands. Director Huss ends up with a lot oher plate: the murder of one nurse, the disappearance of another one, the appearance of a so-called ghost, her relationship with her team of detectives, and her relationship with her husband and 14 year old twin daughters.

The written style of this particular Tursten book is a very direct writing style that does not include a lot of adornment. There are some peculiarities of expression, such as the consistent references to “morning prayers”, which is the term Huss and her team use when referring to the meeting the the Crimes Squad holds at the beginning of each day. The direct style of writing has been used in other crime fiction works, but not quite as commonly as this particular Helene Tursten novel implies. The overall plot of Night Rounds is intriguingly inventive and uniquely engaging,

This immensely engaging book was a great introduction to the author Helene Tursten. It’s been quite awhile since I read a book that I couldn’t put down. It was excellent – great translator and great main character. Hopefully this review will reach the author.

I’m going to find some others by this author!!!

Y’know Graeme, without this site of yours I’d be quite ignorant of so many authors. My sister asked if I’d heard of Helene Tursten (NO) so I immediately came to your site and checked her out. LOTS of information about her and what she’s written. Another new author for me to look into.
    As ever – Thanks!!
