The Ruby Key

As the first book in the Sun and Moon book series, the Ruby Key is a fantasy tale, which begins like a human and non-human tale. To maintain the old truce and promises, the humans make a yearly sacrifice. By doing this, the non-humans do not tresspass the territories set, but they also avoid harming the human beings. In this book, the nightlings or non-human spirits are just like elves. Their faces are not only ethereal but are also delicate. Their skin color is either blue or yellow while their order is much higher than that of human beings. However, it does not take before everything becomes clear. The system which was in place had worked for so many years; however, it seems as if it is slowly breaking down in Genna’s village. Gena’s father who fell ill with an exceedingly strange illness has finally disappeared, and their mother is showing similar symptoms that their father had.

While all this is happening, their uncle has taken over the throne of the village. However, unlike the previous ruler, the Uncle is ruling less wisely and has even forced Genna’s mother to become his wife. With the aim of healing their mother, Dan and Genna do the unthinkable. Genna, who is 14 years of age, together with Dan, her twelve-year-old brother are on a mission to gather magical sap, which they would use on their dying mother. However, collecting magical sap during this time of the year is exceedingly risky since it is collected in the nightlings territory. However, Yarri, a nightling girl meets with the two kids and takes them to the ruler of the nightlings, Kai-Lord. The Kai-Lord is a tyrant who has made an exceedingly terrible bargain with the chieftain of the human village.

However, the two together with the other villagers are in great danger because, the king wants a nightling boy to be brought back to him. With that said, this was a brilliantly written novel. All the characters both the main and supporting characters are interesting and engaging. Gennadara is exceedingly intriguing; despite being timid, her determination is still commendable. Holly Lisle has created an immense and exceedingly interesting world. She also does an excellent job of describing the environment in a manner which brilliantly conveys the dank and dark mood of the novel. All in all, this book that has been well-written and the author shows that she has an exceedingly unique skill of creating an intelligent and readable style of writing.

The Silver Door

The Silver Door is the second book in the Sun and Moon book series. Genna together with her good friend is pulled from an anticlimactic life in Arrienda, a city of the nightlings. The two characters are transported into the last city, the Spire. Just like an extremely weird and long lasting technology, the magic which runs through the city is still so much active. While in the city, the two characters can learn about the battle between humans and the nightlings which happened thousands of years ago. After being defeated in the war, the human beings were transformed into beasts of burden. Jargan assists the two main character with their orientation into the history of the city. Jagan is a boy who was placed under a magical sleep by his parents a thousand years ago. However, Catri’s magical kiss is what awaken’s the boy.

Genna’s destiny to become a sun rider is what prevents her from living a luxurious life. It does not take before the severe events force her to leave the last city, Spire. Thus she goes back into the danger so as to rescue the people that she loves deeply. Danrith, Genna’s brother together with her two friends Yarri and Doyati are featured briefly in this installment, which is mainly about Genna, the dragon, Catri and the cat. In this installment, we learn more about the culture of Genna’s and Dan’s people as well as the secret traditions and magics which have been passed down from one generation to another. Integrity and honor are highly valued in this book which in turn makes sense especially for individuals who are controlled by unknown or outside forces.

With that said, the world that Holly Lisle manages to create is not only intriguing but also distinctive like any other real place. The world not only has well-developed societies, but it also has complex societies with great magic. A majority of the readers are going to find the author’s creative addition of fairy lore quite captivating. The Silver Door is a novel which focuses entirely on battle between the humans and the nightlings. It is a story about greed and betrayal. If you haven’t read any of the author’s book’s before, then you are definitely going to love with her unique writing style. She has the ability to create a fictious world and make it sound and feel realistic. Some of the most noticeable places in the book include the taandu tree forests and the moonroads. The author has done an excellent job in describing all these places and in turn will make you feel as if you are a part of the world. You should definitely add this installment to your reading list.
