Homer Hickam is a published author. He is an American veteran and was an engineer for NASA. He is the author of October Sky, which was turned into a 1999 feature length film. He has appeared on multiple television series as himself.

Born in 1943, Homer grew up in West Virginia in Coalwood. He graduated high school and later would attend the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He graduated in 1964 with a degree in industrial engineering.

He served in Vietnam with the Army for one year until 1968, He was awarded various commendations for his time in active duty. He has been writing ever since he returned from service. At first he would write about his favorite hobby, scuba diving. He has been on many adventures and wrote about some of them. The pieces were published in several magazines.

After being inspired by a dive on a wreck, he became interested in military history. As a result, he researched and would write about an event during the second World War– a battle against the Germans that took place of the eastern coast of the United States. The result would end up being the novel Torpedo Junction.

This book was published in 1989 and would make him an author in print for the very first time. The military history book would also be popular enough to become a bestseller in its genre. In addition to military books, this author has written in other genres, such as fantasy.

Homer still loves writing and going on a scuba dive. One of his recreational activities that he does on a near daily basis is jogging. He has also taken up the field of paleontology on an amateur level. Despite his beginner’s status, he goes to Montana to work with a Doctor in the field for the summer every year.

Homer Hickam is the creator and author of the Josh Thurlow series. This series first became available to readers in 2003. The first book in the series was titled The Keeper’s Son, and a sequel came out shortly after. The Far Reaches came out in 2007 and made the series a trilogy.

The Keeper’s Son is the intriguing first book in the Thurlow series. Check it out at your local library or bookstore or find it online!

The book starts out with the main character on a journey home. Josh Thurlow may have a lot of baggage, but he can’t let that stop him from trying to get back to Killakeet Island. Despite the demons, he has to get there and take command of a patrol boat. The small Coast Guard vessel already has a crew ready to man it.

The locals all have their own unique personalities. The island itself may be small, but it is brimming to the top with natural beauty. The lighthouse in particular is a crown gem of the island, and Josh’s family has maintained it over the generations for a number of years. Just seeing it is a reminder, however, to all that happened before.

Josh cannot help his memories of his brother, just a baby when he had been mysterious lost at sea. It had been seventeen years since that acute tragedy struck and devastated their family. Even worse that his brother had disappeared without a trace was the fact that many blamed him for the loss. All these years later, he cannot forget about what happened and often thinks of his sibling.

Though all his relatives thought his brother to be dead, Josh always wondered if he might be out there somewhere. There was never any proof provided or any evidence that came to the surface that he had truly died. No one had come forth with any stories and no clothes or remains of him were ever discovered. The concept that he could be alive in the world was not that far fetched, especially since Josh knew for a fact that he had nothing to do with his disappearance into thin air.

He can’t let go of the idea, so he begins the search. Even as the U-boats arrive and the Germans attack the beach, he still keeps up the hunt for his long lost brother. What begins as hope quickly becomes a mission and a quest that he will not let go of– even if it puts him directly in harm’s way.

Thurlow may soon come across an enemy that he may find difficult to conquer. When one of the German commanders stands in his path, Josh has no other choice but to confront this new foe. Otto Krebs may just have the answers to all of his questions, but is he willing to give them up?

Josh may find a new ally in the form of Dosie, a young lady that is on her own quest against those who have come to invade and conquer. Now the hero must figure out whether he can afford to abandon the hunt for his brother or if he is going to give it up to have a chance at happiness and true love.

What will our protagonist decide to do? You’re going to have to pick up this exciting debut history thriller to find out!

The Ambassador’s Son is the exciting second book in Hickam’s series. If you loved all of the action and adventure contained in the debut story, then you should definitely check out the thrilling second installment!

The setting is 1943, and Japan is in the middle of a huge fight. Right now it’s going down across the Solomon Islands, and what happens will determine who controls the South Pacific. Lieutenant Armistead is nowhere to be found and people are saying that he deserted. The rumors are hard to hear for Josh, who is currently a Commander serving with the Coast Guard.

They forged a friendship in battle, but that does not come above duty– or any orders. His superiors have now given him the unfortunate order to bring the Lieutenant in, dead or alive. With the help of a misfit crew, the mission is to track his pal down despite his personal feelings. Can he do it? Read this book to find out!
