Reaching the status of New York Times bestselling author, the American writer Susan Mallery is someone who has been writing for quite some time now. Creating an impressive backlog of work, she originally started out back in 1991, quickly coming to prominence throughout the following years. This would see her rise to stardom as an author of much repute, building both her name and her brand as an author worldwide on a global scale. With a whole host of readers amassing from all over the world, she is appreciated by both the critics and the general public alike, gaining critical and commercial success. Producing romance novels, she comes from a long and illustrious tradition, creating titles that follow the many tropes of the genre, whilst also branching out on their own. A highly unique author, she combines both character and narrative, creating some extremely compelling and highly engaging novels. Knowing and understanding the format of the genre with expert precision, she is clearly a master of her craft, writing with both confidence and wit. Publishing over eighty novels to date, she has gone on to become one of the most prolific novelists currently working within the industry. Living in Seattle with her husband and their cats, she is also a writer that produces large number of widely regarded series as well. One such series is that of her ongoing and much loved ‘Hometown Heartbreakers’ collection of romance novels, which have been greatly appreciated worldwide. With stand-alone titles each containing their own separate romance, they provide the perfect casual reads for both fans of the author and newcomers alike. Whilst there’s no one particular over-arcing narrative running throughout, this is a series that has a thematic style drawing them altogether. Taking the idea of being set in the hometown of the characters, these provide a cozy romantic feeling for the reader that they can then take away. This also means that the series can potentially carry on indefinitely, with a lot of room to continue growing and building as a franchise in the many years to come.

Consisting of a total of eleven novel so far, the series itself started back in 1994 with the debut title ‘The Best Bride’ and continued from there. Running until 2003 it finally finished with ‘Quinn’s Woman’, giving the series a complete and conclusive feel for the duration of its entire run. There would also be a whole number of omnibus editions collating the many novels for their readers and fans to consume. With more and more discovering this series every day, it is one franchise that will continue to live on into the foreseeable future for a long time yet.

The Best Bride

Originally brought out through the Silhouette publishing label, this would be the title that started the ‘Hometown Heartbreakers’ series. Establishing the core themes, it gives a clear idea of what’s to come in the many books to follow, whilst also providing a self-contained romance story. With characters and a narrative that combine to make a compelling engaging story, this is the ideal opening story for the franchise as a whole.

Setting up a lot of the core ideas, this title really gives the audience a great insight into the mind of Mallery as a romance writer. The characters themselves are atypical of a novel such as this, but not so much so that they don’t stand out, creating personalities that are entirely unique to them. Taking place in a small town, the location is also ideal as well, creating a world that is perfectly juxtaposed with the story itself.

Taking place within Haynes Glenwood, this sees the apparent lady-killer Sheriff Travis as one of the sexiest men in the area. With his killer smile he apparently has all the women their swooning at his feet, but it’s Elizabeth Abbot that finally turns his head. Looking to finally settle down, he could potentially be the one for both Abbot and her daughter, providing the man in their lives. It is her past, though, that could be the major undoing for Elizabeth, as she attempts to put it all behind her and move on with her life and love once again. Will she be able to though? Can Travis be the daddy she’s always wanted for her daughter? Who will be the best bride?

Marriage on Demand

Brought out through Silhouette Books once again, this carries on with another story in the ‘Hometown Heartbreakers’ series of novels. Moving on from the last title, this is another stand-alone romance all of its own, allowing readers to invest themselves in an entirely new world. Using the same thematic ideas though, it still uses a similar structure to the last novel, whilst also developing it at the same time.

Following one Austin Lucas this time, it sees him as one of the sexiest men in his area with a whisper to die for. Soon this even begins to tempt the seemingly innocent and cherubic Rebecca Chalmers, as she finds herself drawn to him. That’s when one night after a particularly vicious storm he finds himself in bed with her, but something is different about this woman, as he finds that he may have feelings for her. Finding himself inexplicably drawn to her, he realizes this apparent small town saint could potentially be the one to tame him and his heart. Will they end up together? Can they overcome their differences? Who will find their marriage on demand?

The Hometown Heartbreakers Series

Not only for fans of the author, but for fans of the genre as a whole, this is one series that really delivers upon its initial premise. With its engaging scenarios and compellingly written characters, it all adds up to being a perfect example of a romance novel, providing escapism and fun. Whilst it works as a collection of stand-alone novels, readers will find themselves not being able to put each one down, immediately moving ahead to the next when they’ve finished. The characters have also resonated with readers worldwide, regardless of where they’re from, thus ensuring its timeless quality as a series. The legacy of the series looks set to be something that’s set to continue for a long time yet, with it not showing signs of going away anytime soon.
