Melissa Yi is a published author of fiction. It is a pen name used by Dr. Melissa Yuan-Innes.

In addition to writing books, the author is also an emergency physician. Melissa publishes her medical thriller novels about Dr. Hope Sze under her pen name Melissa Yi and writes other books like fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books under Melissa Yuan-Innes.

She’s been reading since she was young when her parents would drop her off at her local library. The family would relocate to Frankfurt, Germany when Melissa was 10. She started writing her own stories, partially due to the lack of books in English there. They moved again to Canada and Melissa picked up reading more actively and stopped writing for a time, picking back up later.

These days, Yi has won awards for her work. She tries to write and read as often as she can, despite her job calling her away at all hours of the day and night and being busy with being a mother. She is married to her sweetheart from high school and together they have two children and a dog, a Rottweiler shepherd. The family resides in the Eastern Ontario area close to where Melissa works. She enjoys laughing, sustainable fashion, blading, yoga, and stories.

She has made the shortlist for best crime story for an Arthur Ellis Award in Canada and been a finalist to receive a Derringer Award. Melissa has had her work appear in a variety of publications, with stories being featured in Montreal Noir and Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine. While in medical school, she participated in Writers of the Future and placed second. Her work has appeared in the anthology The Dragon and the Stars, which received an Aurora Award. She has written Medical Post articles, romance stories, and children’s books which have earned her awards (under Melissa Yuan).

Melissa has been on CBC Radio many different times. CBC Radio commissioned “Code Blues” a radio drama pilot based on the first novel in the Hope Sze series. The author has also appeared on TV Cogeco and Rogers TV and has been interviewed countless times in print and radio.

The main character of this series is Dr. Hope Sze. She’s an independent woman that works in the medical field, and she came to Montreal with a mission. Actually, a few of them. She wants to get through her residency in family medicine no matter what. She would also like to go somewhere to try some pain au chocolat. She would also like to try and be social, maybe even going out for a date at some point during the course of the upcoming two years.

The good news is that when it comes to dating, Montreal has a ton of cute guys everywhere you look. But when she’s on her first shift in the emergency room, she has an actual emergency come her way. A doctor is coding blue in the locker room and she has to try to resuscitate him. He also happens to be one of the most loved, smartest doctors at St. Joseph’s. But as it turns out, this charming professional cannot be saved.

Now it appears that it’s either an accident or murder. The cops speculate it was an insulin overdose. But that doesn’t explain being in the OR area late at night without any good reason. Hope wants to get to the bottom of this, believing it’s murder. As she attempts to find the killer, she is joined by two men that want to apparently help her. One of them is charming, but are the men innocent or looking to see what she finds?

Hope’s trying to do what she can to solve this case, but at the end of the day, her only mission is to survive. She’s already in over her head. Should she keep going or abandon the detective work and focus on her career? Read this thrilling novel to find out what happens next!

Notorious D.O.C. is the second novel in the Hope Sze Medical Mystery series by Melissa Yi. If you love engaging mysteries, check this series out!

Life has been interesting lately for Dr. Hope Sze. Just a week before, she solved her first amateur case. But she’s done with murder investigations for now since she practically got killed during the process of it all. She’s focusing on passing the psychiatry rotation and that means putting her sleuthing to the side.

Then she starts her rotation and the first patient confides that her daughter’s passed away and that she thinks someone killed her. The mother appears distraught and Hope feels the pull to get involved, even if she doesn’t know how she’d be able to take on an 8-year-old murder case that the Montreal cops couldn’t solve.

This is definitely a cold case, but the mother can’t get over the loss or the lack of justice. She has yet to find closure, and this doctor wants to help. Hope gets two smart men, her ex and a doctor, to help her work the case. But with a potential murderer still out there that could strike again, Hope’s got to work with one eye open. Can she crack the case and make it through unharmed? Read this thriller to find out!
