Howard of Warwick is a notable English author hailing from Warwick, UK. He likes to write books and stories based on the crime, comedy, historical fiction, and humor genres. Author Howard is regarded as a humble chronicler, who often stumbles upon the manuscripts describing the stories revolving around his popular character named Brother Hermitage and his companion called Wat the Weaver. Author Howard was born and brought up in Warwick. His works have been seen, heard, and read. Most of the books of Howard are filled with laughter and humor elements. Howard’s peers have seen fit to give recognition to the unworthy efforts of Howard. They have even handed him prizes for coming up with excellent stories to tell. His most successful work, Brother Hermitage is now 8 novels old. Brother Hermitage is described as a medieval detective. The books are loosely released all over the world and have gained enough success because of the purchasing public. The stories of Brother Hermitage flow in the forward direction continuously. Other than a few accuracy checks, the stories look quite interesting to read and laugh out loud. Some short stories featuring Brother Hermitage’s character are also available freely. A dedicated web page has also been developed under the name of the author. Author Howard remains in touch with his readers and fans through his personal website and a Twitter account, where he tries to sort the queries of his fans and even informs them about the recent happenings in his writing career as well as the release dates of his upcoming books.

Author Howard says that he gained the inspiration to write his books from the popular works of some established authors such as Monty Python, Spike Milligan, Woodhouse, Terry Pratchet, Douglas Adams, etc. Howard is also the chronicler of creative history. He takes references from the real life events and forces them on to the past’s great events. Author Howard had taken birth on a special day. It is said that when he learned to walk, he plucked the first quill from his family goose. Howard used to skim through the old volumes of pipe designs of the medieval period idly. Later, he found his first parchment fragment with Brother Hermitage. He had no idea at that time that it would lead to literary marvel. After spending many years in research, and coming up with several volumes, the Brother Hermitage stories have become the best selling humor historicals of the world. Apart from the research works related to Brother Hermitage, author Howard has produced reinterpretations of several major historical events of Britain. The ‘agents’ of Howard continue to supply him with manuscripts. He is regarded as a man of questionable integrity and boundless energy. Howard is known to keep pressing for new volumes one after the other. And with this, his work continues to progress. He keeps coming up with titles after every small interval. This has led him to find a place in the list of noteworthy authors. Howard’s name is counted among the very best of the historical comedy genre. Howard usually ridicules the great historical events in his books, and in doing so, he makes the readers enjoy his unique descriptions.

The Chronicles of Brother Hermitage series written by Howard of Warwick consists of 8 books in total, which were released between the years 2010 and 2016. Each and every book of this series features the lead character in the role of Brother Hermitage, who is described as living in the period of early history in England. The first book of this series is entitled ‘The Heretics of De’Ath’. It was released by the Funny Book publication in the year 2010. At the start of the book’s story, it is shown that the year is 1066 in England. A pretty pointless and theological debate is going on at the De’Ath Dingle monastery. Suddenly, someone dies mysteriously. The investigation of this death case seems to be a routine thing for an average medieval monk. However, the mystery of the case is such that it does not look to the cup of tea of normal monks. It is thought if Brother Simon is made in charge of the murder investigation by someone, then he must either be out of his mind or he must be planning something. Later, Brother Hermitage is ordered to be executed for murdering the victim without any solid proof. Hermitage is innocent in this case in every possible way as he was just standing on the sidelines when the murder happened. Brother Hermitage wonders whether something planning is going on to frame him falsely. He decides to take the help of Wat, who is a pornographic tapestry weaver. The two try to find clues and evidences in the murder case and catch the real killer before times runs out. Author Howard says that this book is a perfect one for the lovers of historical detective novels.

The second book of the series is called ‘The Garderobe of Death’. It was published in 2015 by Funny Book publishers. Author Howard has mentioned the primary characters of this novel as Henri de Turold, Lord Robert Grosmal, King William, and Brother Hermitage. He has set the story at the time of the year 1067 in England. At the beginning of the story of the book, it is depicted that Henri Turold is the favorite companion of King William while they go for hunting. He gets murdered and the nature of the wounds on his body keeps everyone puzzling as to how anyone could murder him like this. Lord Grosmal, who has a disordered castle and a disordered mind, knows it very well that King William becomes very tetchy on learning about the murder of his friends. Therefore, he sends someone to De’Ath Dingle and orders him to bring a monk for carrying out the murder investigation. Generally, the medieval monks prove very good in such investigations. Brother Hermitage is selected to do the investigation as he too is a monk. However, he does not seem very good in this field as he is very new to it. But, he and Wat are motivated and confident because of the previous case that they had solved successfully. Later, they learn that King William is going to arrive for taking a first hand information about the progress made in the investigation. Therefore, Brother Hermitage begins to hurry as he doesn’t wish to face the wrath of the king. And as he moves ahead with interrogating the suspects and local people, he comes across many revelations. The book was well appreciated and praised by one and all.

I thoroughly enjoy these stories. I was halfway through The Garderobe of Death last week when I lost my Kindle at the Denver airport. Just a little glitch in my reading.
