In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, the lives of Adrian Monk and Natalie are depicted as getting back to normal again in San Francisco. But, there is one exception as Natalie is studying for obtaining her PI license, after which she will become the permanent partner of Monk. Before taking the big step, Natalie goes to Miranda Bigley, who runs a self-help program in Half Moon Bay, for a retreat from her. Miranda has helped Natalie with her philosophical work to deal with the recent changes in her life. Adrian Monk thinks that Miranda is a cult and is fooling Natalie.
