Ilsa Madden-Mills is a USA Today, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal, best-selling author of romance, eBooks, and contemporary books best known for her Briarcrest Academy series. She writes about sexy alpha males and strong heroines- characters that at times you want to slap. When not writing, you’ll find Mills jamming out to Pink, drowning herself in Diet Coke, or checking on her chocolate stash.

Ilsa Madden-Mills became a published author in 2014 when Very Wicked Beginning the first book in Briarcrest Academy series was released. The author has also published standalone novels including Fake Fiancé (2017), and I Dare You (2018).

Very Bad Things

Very Bad Things the first book in Briarcrest Academy series introduces us to Nora Blakely.

She is the perfect daughter, the perfect role model and the perfect student from the ideal family. However, this is only what the world sees her because underneath that perfect shell lies a broken young woman who is continuously emotionally tortured by her controlling mother, deprived affection from her ever-absent father, and continually haunted by dark secrets of her past life that keep on surfacing. In other words- she’s not the perfect young girl everyone around her see, but instead, she’s a time bomb.

Her self-control is swiftly slipping away from her fingers more each day and experiencing more panic attacks which were once only in her mind. All it takes is one episode and Nora’s life changes forever.

She thrashes away all the things that have made her life a living hell, rebels against anyone or anything that has held her spirit captive and embarks on a journey of rediscovering herself and self-acceptance. However, having been brought up by a mother who has made her feel inadequate and worthless, the hardest thing for our heroine is to learn self-love.

Madden-Mills story also introduces us to Leo Tate, a young man who lost his parents at a tender age- forcing him to be an adult overnight- responsible for himself and his younger brother. Determined to ensure that his brother never lacks a thing in his life- he put his dreams aside and worked effortlessly to for them to have all the opportunities their parents would have wanted them to have. He raised his younger brother Sebastian into a responsible young man who emotional intelligence and wit can only be matched by his empathy and kindness towards those around him.

However, having invested all his energy and resources into building better lives for themselves, Leo has always neglected the wants of his heart in the process. When he stumbles upon Nora, their fates collide, and they instantaneously connect.

What follows next is one strange courtship, where Nora pursues the unwilling Leo. She is focused on making Leo fall for her, and she’s determined to have her in any means. She acts out of characters and regularly puts her heart on the line. While Leo restrains her advances, Nora embraces her love for him and comes to cope with the rejections and doesn’t give up. Leo’s commitments don’t even allow him to acknowledge his love for her for her see’s love as something fragile, final, painful and the feelings for Nora scares him. So, Leo keeps on pushing her away at every chance he gets, convincing himself that loveless life is much safer than risking that love stolen from him.

Madden-Hill has done an excellent job in her series debut book. Nora makes a great heroine. She was born into a life of secrets and privilege, and at the age of 19, she has everything that she could have desired. She’s a successful pianist, a beauty queen and headed to Princeton after high school. She leaves behind her million dollar house and becomes a young woman bent on pushing the limits with drugs, alcohol, and sex.

Something is refreshing about how the heroine about how she puts bravely puts her card on the table and pursues after her love for Leo knowing well that he could break her heart. She’s an emotional train wreck throughout the story, deeply troubled, self-destructive but her heart is always in the right place even when her mind rebels against the whole world.

On the other hand, Leo is hard to love the character. His struggle to keep Nora away even when his heart was aching for her love is compelling and also heartbreaking at times. He possesses the traits of an alpha character with an emotional obstacle to overcome before letting himself fall in love with the woman he fell in love with at first sight.

Dirty English

Dirty English is the first book in English series by Ilsa Madden-Mills. The book has a touch of Pride & Prejudice one of the bestselling books of all times. It introduces us to Elizabeth Bennet, a woman who can be described as the definition of damaged. She is broken “beyond repair” all in the name of love.

Elizabeth started an as a naïve young woman like we all do when we fall in life, but her life was altered. One decision made during Prom night was all it took to change the course of her life forever and ever since she’s shut down. She’s become rigid, cold, and also withdrawn from her personal life and lives by a moto of no repeats- screw them and leave them immediately before they can screw you. Elizabeth is a brave woman; she receives a scholarship to pursue a whole new life for herself. However, while getting settled, she meets a man named Declan in the most unimaginable ways.

Declan Blay is cute, has silver eyes and a body any woman would die for. He wants to gain independence from his pejorative father. He wants a life for himself and somehow help his brother. He doesn’t want anything to do with love especially after being burned by his ex-lover. However, when he meets Elizabeth, they have an instant connection- but there’s a part of Elizabeth that warns her to keep off from Declan while another pushes her to give it a try.

Dirty English is a wonderful blend of passion, action, romance, and some satisfying college drama to keep the reader engaged to the last page. The story is told from both Elizabeth and Declan point of views with a great deal of depth.
