In Hero Years
In Hero, Years is a science fiction series by Michael A. Stackpole. The series is set in a small idyllic town named Lyttleton, where teenagers with special powers live, and century-old mysteries remain unresolved. While the teenagers have managed to hide their abilities for years, it is increasingly becoming difficult as revolutionaries threaten to change the town. How will the teenagers act when they have to choose between their secrets and the city they love? Will all appreciate their skills in this town?
Need To Know
Need to Know is the first book in the In Hero Years series and a prequel to Hero Years. I’m Dead novel. The book introduces Grant Stone, an extraterrestrial who is raised like a human teenager. However, the young man comes with incredible powers that set him apart, but he is not ready to reveal them to the world. Grant is not sure which life path to follow. However, he is confident that he doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life working on his family’s farm. When armed revolutionaries come to his home town, Grant has to reevaluate his future.
No one anticipated that a Saturday visit to the bank would turn the way it did. Grant and his sister Polly are busy minding their business when robbers hit the bank. The customers hide in fear, and the bank management follows the robber’s instructions to fill the bags. While Grant has the power to subdue the robber without them even knowing what hit them, he is hesitant to act. What will happen when all the people in the bank discover his secret? Can he continue enjoying life in his beloved town of Lyttleton after his secret is out? What will happen if the thieves start taking hostages?
These are the questions running through Grant’s mind as the robbers go about their business. However, something unusual happens. A white vapor blinds everyone except Grant, who witnesses as a man came from the vault and started attacking the robbers. Instinctively, Grant also moves. In nanoseconds, he manages to take out two of these dangerous men. No one notices his movement, and if Polly didn’t know about his special powers, she would have missed it too. The man from the vault disappears before the police arrive. After the usual questioning, it comes clear that no one saw the stranger who overpowered and handcuffed the robbers and the teenager who helped him.
This incident pushes Grant to consider a path he had always dreamed about. The risk of people finding out about his secret will increase if he follows his dream, but what better way to safeguard the town he loves. Join Grant and Polly on the action-filled yet bizarre adventure. The teenagers are fun, the mystery man even more interesting, and the rest of the cast does a lot to add character to this story. Grant and Polly are likable, and it is beautiful how the two teenagers look out for each other.
Need To Know is an intriguing story that will leave you at the edge of your seat. As the tension rises, the author is going to take you deeper into Gran’s life and the changes happening in his little town. The novella is quite short at about 160 pages, and you can enjoy it all in one sitting. If you are looking for an exciting science-fiction story with teenage characters, this book is a perfect choice.
In Serve Days
In Service, Days is the second book in the In Hero Years series. The book stars Lemuel Lyttle and his sister Lynn. For the last twelve years, Lemuel has been training in different elite academies across the world. The teenager is being trained to become Merlin, the family’s home superhero, and his track record is quite impressive. Now set to join Lyttleton Union High school, Lemuel is afraid of what his new school has to offer. Sure, there will be bullies, but can he survive it all with exposing his abilities? How do you refrain from standing up for yourself when you know those who are bullying you can’t compare to you in strength and skills?
Lemuel will soon discover that he is not the only one with unique abilities, and the good thing is that he and Grant become fast friends. It is interesting to have someone who understands his struggles. Like Polly, Lynn knows about her brother’s abilities, which she has kept a secret over the years. Though younger, Polly is very protective of her brother, but she knows that his nature puts him at a disadvantage, especially where bullies are concerned. How will Grant survive the high school politics, girls, and the extra duties that come with his powers? Read the book to the end to find out.
Once again, the author welcomes you to teenagers’ world and their never-ending desire to fit in. Even those with special abilities have to deal with issues like bullying and peer pressure even though they know they live in a world where they will never fit in. The Lyttleton setting continues to give this series and edge. Thanks to the author’s descriptions, you cannot help but picture the farms and the idyllic life in this small town. Lemuel is likable, and it is incredible that despite his powers and family’s wealth, the teenage boy remains humble and respectful to all. Will Lemuel be pushed to use his powers, and what happens after that? How do the new friendships between the teenagers pan out?
In Serve, Days is another intriguing book in this series. It is just as short as the first one, and the characters are similar in so many ways. As you get to meet Lemuel and Polly, you will also interact more with Grant and Lynn. The writing here is excellent, the world-building outstanding, and the pace will leave you out of breath by the time you get to the end. This book is a perfect choice when you are in the mood for a quick science-fiction read.
