About Iris Johansen:
Iris Johansen is an American author. She specializes in Romance and Crime Novels and has had a high level of success. She was born April 7th 1938, she is married and has a son called Roy, who she collaborates with on some of her later novels and a daughter called Tamara who now works as her research assistant
A late Beginning
Johansen did not start writing until later on in her life. She needed something to do once her children had left home. What started out as a hobby quickly became a very successful career and she is still publishing today. She started out writing romance novels and she was first published in 1984 with Touch the Horizon. The book is about the romance between Billie Callahan and David Bradford.
Billie is an actress who travels to the desert to work on a film and David is a mysterious cowboy who has hidden reasons for being in the desert. The book was very successful and was compared to Lawrence of Arabia. The book reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list and the stage was set for her to become a very successful author.
Making the Switch
Johansen had just under 40 novels published when she decided to switch from romance novels to crime fiction. The reason for her switch were not publicized until a fan asked her the question on her website. She indicated that she started out writing romance novels because she liked a happy ending and then she switched because she wanted more plot twists and character depths that were more challenging to her.
She also said that she still tries to put a romance element into her crime novels now, so that she feels like she has the best of both worlds. Her crime novels have brought her great success and she has had 17 consecutive New York Times bestsellers.
A Criminal Beginning
Her first novel as a criminal writer was The Ugly Duckling, which was published in 1996. The novel is concerned with the story of Nell Calder. She suffered a brutal attack, which should have killed her, but she survived. With her attacker still on the loose, she is protected by someone who is determined to save her and catch the killer at the same time.
The book made the New York Times bestseller list and she went on to write a further 113 stand alone novels in the criminal genre. Her latest stand-alone novel was published in 2009 and was called Storm Cycle.
Eve Duncan
In 1998, she published her first Eve Duncan novel called The Face of Deception. Johansen is still writing books for the Eve Duncan series now, with the latest three novels, Taking Eve, Hunting Eve and Silencing Eve all being released in 2013. So far, there are 18 novels in the Eve Duncan Series.
Who is Eve Duncan?
Eve Duncan is a woman who has faced many evils in her life and yet she has survived. She was an illegitimate child when she was born and she followed in her Mother’s footsteps when she had her own child, called Bonnie, at 18 years old. This should have ruined her life but she made the most of it and was working her way through college when Bonnie was kidnapped and murdered. This is something that has shaped her life.
The murderer has never been caught and Bonnie’s body was never found. Since that tragic murder, Eve has devoted her life to bringing closure to other parents. She works as a forensic sculptor and spends a lot of her time at work. She never had anymore children, but she does have an adopted daughter called Jane, who she rescued off the streets. She lives with her lover Joe Quinn and they have built a loving family for themselves.
The Eve Duncan series is critically acclaimed, keeping readers glued to each page and anxiously awaiting the next novel. Novels in this series are usually released in trilogies, with a theme in the three books.
Joe Quinn
Joe Quinn is an FBI Agent and he met Eve when he was assigned to the Bonnie Duncan case. He instantly fell in love with Eve and he left the FBI to join the Atlanta Police Department so could build a life with Eve.
Their relationship is an intense love story but they experience times of strain because Eve is obsessed with finding her daughter’s killer. He has a starring role in six of the 18 Eve Duncan novels; Countdown, Blind Alley, Body of Lies, Killing Game, Quinn and Bonnie.
Jane MacGuire
As mentioned above, Jane is Eve and Joe’s adoptive daughter and they are all very close. Jane rescued her from a life on the street and they have been a family ever since. In the latest novels, Jane is a young woman and has her own career and life. She is an artist and often gets herself into her own messes.
She struggles with relationships because of her past and often has trouble trusting people. She features heavily in the three novels Eight Days to Live, Count Down and Blind Alley and fans of the Eve Duncan novels are always eager to see what she is up to in her life.
The Future
Johansen released her latest Eve Duncan trilogy this year, with the conclusion released on the 1st of October. The trilogy has been a critical success with the first two books heading straight onto the New York Times bestseller list.
In the future, she is set to release the third novel in her other series which feature Kendra Michaels (written with her son) and then she will continue to write her Eve Duncan novels as well as collaborating more with her Son, Roy. Roy himself is an Edgar Award winning screenwriter and novelist. On his own he has written books such as Answer Man, Beyond Belief and Deadly Visions.
Collaboration
In collaboration with her son, Roy, Iris released Close Your Eyes, which tells the story of Kendra Michaels. Kendra tracks serial killers for the FBI with skills that she has developed due to being blind for 20 years of her life. In this story, the target of the serial killer is a previous lover so she is taking the case very personally.

You and your son have made reading a pleasure I have all your books and have shared them with my friends and they love you as much as I do
read all the Eve Duncan series. loved them!!!! first series Ive ever read. normally Im not a reader but couldn’t put the books down. I cant believe a person has that much talent! I am not into love/romance. is there any other drama / crime books I don’t know about?
thanks for keeping me involved in reading.
My wife and I agree. A note after Vendatta as listed under Eve Duncan is required. Eve has very few sentences where she is even mentioned. It’s nice to show where the book belongs in the E D timeline. Otherwise, we don’t think it belongs there. It might be nice to list the E D universe where all the related characters exist in one time line. Harry Bosch is listed in a universe, if not here, elsewhere on the internet. It make reading the books in chronological order much easier
Thanks for the feedback Mike – yes we have the Bosch Universe on our site. I will look into potentially creating a universe for this although if you could give me any pointers for that I’d appreciate it. You could e-mail me g@8ambeerpong.com
I’ve read 38 of your books looking forward to the rest of them love Eve Duncan, kendra and Ling stories
I just finished reading my first Iris Johansen book “On The Run”. Outstanding! Now I’m hooked. I started “Countdown” and realized I’m missing some history and therefore would like to read the Eve series in sequence. I’ll bounce in and out of the Stand Alone books. I’m not very young and a slow reader so I better get cracking.
are there any new Eve Duncan books out now. i have read all 27 up to now and have been looking for new books but haven’t found any
The next one is out in June
I would love for Iris Johansen to write more books
About “Bonnie” appearing and talking to her “Mama.”
There is something that is so soothing in that.
I don’t know, I guess I really just like when she does. Does that make any sense?
Thank you.
i started reading iris”s books back in the 90’s …. my best friend started me on these books with sheiks and powers….. i fell in love with reading thanks to Ms. Johansen. My friend, Kelly commited suicide 2016, and these books now have a special meaning to me more than amazing characters but memories,
