The Iron Druid Chronicles series is a highly successful novel series based on the urban fantasy genre and written by the novelist Kevin Hearne. The series consists of seven different novels published by the ‘Del Rey Books’ publishers from the year 2011 to 2014. Kevin has finished writing two more novels in the series, which are to be published soon. All the novels of the series are set in the real world consisting of supernatural creatures in the form of werewolves, witches, demons, vampires and deities of many mythologies. The plots of the series are set in places with real world names. In fact, the initial novels are set in Tempe, Arizona. A Druid named ‘Atticus O’Sullivan’ is the one who describes the plot of the series. Atticus runs a bookshop named Third Eye Books and Herbs and finds it difficult to survive in the struggle Gods, Goddesses and supernatural creatures. The names of the novels in the series are named on physical emotions such as Hounded, Hexed, Hammered, Tricked, Trapped, Hunted and so on. The following is the list of the characters that feature in the series:

1. ATTICUS O’SULLIVAN:
Atticus O’Sullivan narrates the whole series and is also the main protagonist. He is introduced as a Druid in the first novel ‘Hounded’ and is described to be the last of his kind. Atticus is born around 100 BCE in Ireland and his real name is Siodhachan O Suileabhain. He is believed to be about 2100 years old and is characterized by fiery red hair and strong physical appearance similar to that of a fully fit 26 year old human. He has a series of tattoos on his right arm up to his right foot which is unique. He has become cynical, world-weary and lonely because of living for more than 2000 years. Now he lives in Arizona after having survived a number of Empires such as the Roman Empire, Christian Persecution and also both the World Wars. He faces various enemies throughout the series included the mythological characters and humans. He has developed several cunning and witty abilities to survive and get over the struggles of his life. Atticus has few weaknesses, the major one being his lustfulness. He is seen losing his cool composure on a number of occasions throughout the series when he finds the sight of attractive women.

2. THE MORRIGAN:
The Morrigan is the Goddess of War in the Irish mythology and the Celtic Chooser of the Slain. She is one of the main characters of The Iron Druid Chronicles series. The Morrigan is known to take different forms such as a crow, an eel, a cow or a wolf. She normally appears as a trio of goddess sisters.

3. GRANUAILE:
Granuaile is a fire-haired Druid initiate of Atticus. She is introduced as a bartender in the first novel of the series. She believes that she is capable of becoming a Druid and asks Atticus to train her after proving her worth on a number of occasions. Although he is a bit reluctant initially, Atticus agrees to train Granuaile after looking at her seriousness to become a Druid. She undergoes strict training to learn martial arts and Druidry. During the course of her 12 years training, she learns multiple languages and using knives and quarterstaff. She consumes the ‘Immortali’ which is a type of tea to stop aging. Granuaile gets her body tattooed and becomes able to use magic. She starts feeling the attraction for Atticus and argues with him accept their relationship. Atticus is reluctant to it due to ethical reasons, but starts believing his love for her after hooking in the magical spectrum. They both consummate and copulate for 3 days, which helps them to build their stamina. Granuaile receives a special weapon from Atticus that can kill many threats and protect her by turning her invisible.

4. LEIF HELGARSON:
Leif Helgarson is introduced in the first novel as one of the main characters. He is an attorney at Magnusson and Hauk. He has vampire characteristics and usually works at night. Leif does not have the knowledge of the modern languages and does his conversations in an old fashion. He holds the territory of Arizona and is one of the most powerful and oldest vampires of the world. Leif is described with different forms of physical appearances in each of the novels of the series. He used to be a colonist in the 10th century, having a wife and two sons. Due to his egoistic character and the wish of becoming immortal Leif becomes a vampire and continues to be the same in all the novels.

5. OBERON:
Oberon is one of the loyal companions of Atticus. He is a Wolfhound, who was found at a dog rescue facility by Atticus. He comes to know that Oberon needs to be understood well due to the changing environment and hence, he starts hunting occasionally alongside him by changing into a hound. Oberon stays at home while Atticus goes to work and watches a lot of television. He is very fond of breakfast meats. Oberon learns the English language over the time, but does not have a complete knowledge. He is easily controlled by deities and has exceptional qualities of smelling the non-dead people and hearing the invisible people. Oberon is described to be 15 years old in the second book of the series. He feeds on the ‘Immortali’ tea by Atticus that prolongs his life.

6. ANGHUS OG:
Anghus Og is the Celtic God of love who pursues Atticus in order to retrieve his sword named Fragarach, The Answerer.

7. PERUN:
Perun is introduced as the Slavic God of Thunder. He teams up with Atticus and his crew to fight against the evils. Perun is described as a read-headed man. He has a large beard and excessive body hair. He is able to speak Russian language. Perun has jolly and friendly nature. He always tries to protect Atticus and his crew by making them immune to lightning. He begins to have a relationship with Flidais, the Celtic Goddess.

8. HALLBJORN HAUK:
Hallbjorn Hauk or Hal is one of the main characters of The Iron Druid Chronicles series. He resides in Tempe, Arizona and is first introduced in the first novel of the series.

9. EMILY:
Emily is the youngest witch in the Tempe Coven. Although the character of Emily is a minor one in the series, she plays an important role along with her twelve witches. She is often protected by Malina Sokolowski.

10. MALINA SOKOLOWSKI:
Malina Sokolowski is a witch of the Tempe Coven and one of the primary characters of the series. She is the guardian of Emily, the youngest witch.

The first book of the series titled ‘Hounded’ was published in May 2011. It introduces the central characters of the series and the magical world of Tempe, Arizona, where vampires, Gods, werewolves and supernatural elements exist. The novel shows the life of Atticus O’Sullivan, the last Druid and his struggles to overcome the vampires and the supernatural elements. He owns the book shop Third Eye Books and Herbs and possess witty characteristics. He gets his power from the Earth and wields a magical sword named Fragarach, The Answerer. The novel unveils a number of Godly events set off by Fragarach blended with the elements of urban fantasy and mythology. The novel was received very well by the critics and the Publisher’s Weekly termed it as a superb debut novel in the urban fantasy genre. Other authors praised Kevin for his efforts. The readers all over the world were amused by the unique characterization and description of the plot. This brought huge success to the novel and helped it to sell numerous copies worldwide. Kevin received huge motivation to write more novels in the series.

The second novel of The Iron Druid Chronicles series was titled ‘Hexed’ and was published in June 2011. This novel is the sequel to the first one and is also based on the urban fantasy genre. The novel continues to show the adventurous life of Atticus O’Sullivan. He has taken up a Druid initiate named Granuaile to train her in Druidry and martial arts. He strives hard to bring his life back to normal and lives with his dog Oberon. He tries to fend off the evils and safe himself from the allegiance and affections of two Celtic goddesses. Atticus is seen trying to keep away from the supernatural elements of his world and at the same time living his adventurous life day by day. The second novel of the series was also very well received by the critics. The readers found it fun and full of action sequences. It was termed as an awesome novel by the Publisher’s Weekly. Kevin Hearne went on to write seven more novels in the series by banking on the success of the initial couple of novels. All the books of the series have been made into Audiobooks. Luke Daniels and Christopher Ragland have done the narration in the Audiobooks.
