About J.C. Cervantes

Largely writing children’s fantasy novels, the author Jennifer Cervantes, also going under the pen-name of J.C. Cervantes, is a highly regarded bestselling American author. Creating novels that are rich and evocative, she truly is an author who really understands her younger readers, speaking to them directly in a manner that really resonates. Reaching readers from all over the world too, she manages to relate to them both nationally and internationally, writing in a style that is very much her own.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up in San Diego where she was born and raised, Jennifer Cervantes would come to spend many of her summers in New Mexico. It was here that she would discover many of her stories, making up for the fact that she felt that there was not much to do whilst there. Filling her imagination with stories of magic and heroism, she would also read numerous books during her time there too.

This would come to also inspire her lifelong interest with literature, which she would continue to nurture throughout the years. She would also come to attend college in New Mexico later on, before moving back there full-time, all whilst finding her voice as a writer. Now currently living with her husband and three daughters there, she teaches English along with writing, something which she’ll continue for some time to come.

Writing Career

First writing ‘Tortilla Sun’ in 2010, Jennifer Cervantes would make a name for herself as an author of children’s literature. Infusing her stories with magical realism, she would also become highly adept at writing in an engaging manner that took her young readers on an exciting journey. She would later write ‘The Storm Runner’ in 2018, which would also mark the beginning of her series of ‘Storm Runner’ novels.

This would later be followed up with ‘The Fire Keeper’ the following year in 2019, which would continue the much loved series of novels. As an English teach at University in New Mexico too, she continues to make a name for herself as a highly versatile author, always willing to impart the knowledge and skills of her craft. With a strong passion for both magic and football, she maintains her profile both online and off, with plenty more titles planned on the horizon.

Tortilla Sun

Initially released through the Chronicle books publishing label, this would mark the first title to come from Cervantes as an author of children’s literature. Using elements of magical realism infused with fantasy, it takes readers on a journey, whilst also employing a down-to-earth to tone with grounded characters that resonate. First published on the 5th of May in 2010, it would herald the arrival of an exciting new literary talent with a lot to offer with her idiosyncratic stories and prose.

Using a lot of inspiration drawn from her own childhood, Cervantes writes straight from the heart, creating a story that’s truly born from passion. This is shown in both the characters and the world that they inhabit, allowing them to come alive off of the page for the readers. The characters themselves deal with very human issues, such as that found with the leading protagonist of Izzy, as she seems like a fully three-dimensional twelve-year-old that the reader can relate to. In regards to the use of New Mexico as its setting as well, it really makes the most of its environment too, allowing it to come fully into vibrant color.

Discovering a beaten up old baseball with the mysterious words ‘Becausemagic’ inscribed on it, twelve-year-old Izzy finds moving to this new apartment might not be like all the other times. Her mother doesn’t seem to be giving much away, especially in regards to the secrets of her father who passed before she was born. That’s when she begins to discover the secrets of the past and the future, as she spends time at her Nana’s home in a remote New Mexico village. Filled with the taste of her Nana’s home-made enchiladas, she immerses herself in the south-western landscape, with its watermelon mountains and whispering winds. Where will her journey take her? Can she learn the meaning behind the baseball and the truth about her father? What will she discover in the land of the tortilla sun?

The Storm Runner

Brought out through the ‘Rick Ricordian Presents’ publishing house this time, this would initially be released on the 18th of September in 2018. It would be the first in the series of ‘Storm Runner’ novels, introducing both the world and the characters for the very first time. Not only that, but it would take the readers on a journey, providing a self-contained adventure fantasy story as well.

On familiar territory once again, this provides a clear sense of progression from Cervantes previous novel, moving on in both style and tone. Starting up a new franchise, she puts all the pieces into place, whilst also creating a fun and imaginative adventure in the classic mold. The characters themselves are also firmly established, with them set to be the principal players in this new world of fantasy. Bringing New Mexico into the limelight once more too, Cervantes allows the reader to feel as if they’re really there, with the location feeling as if it’s a character in of itself.

Preferring to explore the long dormant volcano nearby his New Mexico home, Zane would rather visit it with his dog Rosie that attend school where he is teased for having a bad leg. That’s when Brooks, a new girl at his school, tells him that he is going to release an ancient evil god from a Mayan relic that has imprisoned him. This is because of his part in the prophecy involving the gateway leading to another world located deep within the heart of the volcano. All of this means that Brooks and him must head into the volcano and destroy the relic, all whilst overcoming a number of different obstacles, such as demons and Brooks transforming into a Hawk. Will they make it to the portal in one piece? Can they prevent the prophecy, whilst Zane copes with his bad leg, along with protecting Rosie? What will happen to them all as Zane becomes the Storm Runner?
