The Mammoth Book of Southern Gothic Romance(2014)Description / Buy at Amazon

J.C. Daniels is the writing name used by Shiloh Walker. The alter ego is the pseudonym that is used by Walker, who has been writing from a very early age. She loves the fantasy genre and became interested in vampires thanks to the book Bunnicula. Since her childhood interest in the supernatural was sparked, she has channeled her love of the genre into her own novels.

Walker has worked as a nurse but now lives with her family somewhere in the Midwest. She used to work as a nurse and now writes a number of genres and novels that include romance (paranormal and suspense) as well as urban fantasy. She is the author of the Colbana Files series which features a total of seven books, starting with Blade Song which was first published in 2012. The sequel is Night Blade which was published the next year, and the series also includes a prequel to the first six published in 2014 called Bladed Magic.

The main character of Blade Song and Night Blade is Kit Colbana, a woman who is an assassin, a thief, and a half breed among many other things. She is a girl who is no stranger to action in the life she leads and her skills as a jack of all trades aid her at every turn. She lives in a world where the supernatural is normal and her jobs frequently involve dealing with various tasks and people, this time including shape shifters in the debut novel.

She has also written a novel called Misery’s Way which was published in 2015 and her novel Final Protocol, a novel that was published in 2017.

Blade Song

Blade Song stars the refreshing powerful main character of Kit Colbana. She is part human and part half breed with supernatural blood running through her veins. There are supernatural beings out there in the world that are more powerful than her, but she also has some tricks up her sleeve even though she is often underestimated by those who meet her.

Kit is an assassin and thief as well as jack of all trades who had a miserable childhood that had lots of violence, training, and blood. She wields a magical blade, hence the name of the book. Now she is an assassin for hire and taking odd jobs when she can get them. Her newest job is to track down the ward of one of the alpha shape shifters in her area as they are missing, which seems like it is going to be a walk in the park.

However, Kit is nervous because the job seems too easy, and it was brought to her by a powerful and sexy cat shape-shifter that showed up in her life out of the blue. But with easy money and easy jobs contrasting against the chaos that comes with dealing with the shifters, what is a girl to do? When Kit starts working the case, she starts finding out that there are more than just a local shifter that is missing– tons of kids have gone missing as well, and her instincts are starting to shout at her that she is in way over her head. Not to mention the fact that if she’s caught in the wrong place or wrong time on this gig, she could end up dead.

Kit is half human and half aneira, which is a type of exotic race. Her grandmother raised her and was responsible for her traumatic childhood as her father was not in her life and the mother died when she was very young. She ran away as a teenager and that is how she got into this situation, the line of work, a and life. Not to mention that the agency that she owns is not doing great.

A vampire that won’t stop following her and her business woes are making Kit crazy. She’s ready to bounce and find a new life in a new place when the cat shifter shows up by the name of Damon. His Alpha’s nephew is missing and he wants her to fix it, and Kit considers the job despite her annoyance at his obnoxiousness (and a cat shape shifter reputation of being a little crazy). But Kit takes it for the money, and maybe a little to help save the boy.

Kit meets with the Cat Alpha, who is fairly crazy. She lets Kit know that failure will mean her life, and Damon becomes her bodyguard on the job. But is there more between them than just a working relationship? And can Kit trust this new shifter who she barely even knows? Kit doesn’t know whether she will succeed in her mission, but one thing is for certain: she’s not going to give up.

Night Blade

Night Blade is the second book in this series starring Kit Colbana. With a resolution on her past gig under her belt, trouble is coming for her– will she be ready? Kit is surprised when someone who comes from her past comes to her with a case that she cannot refuse. Kit has been requested to investigate the deaths of the People on the Council. The only problem with this is that the prime suspect is her lover Damon.

Kit must clear his name and prove that the deaths are coming from another source before Damon pays for the deaths because if she doesn’t Damon will be sentenced to death. Even if she does figure it out, they may still decide to execute Damon. She also can’t tell him about the case as well, making their encounters more than a little awkward. So with the stakes higher than ever, Kit must work to find out what or who is causing the deaths of the people of the council and take them to justice. If she doesn’t, it might be Damon who ultimately ends up paying the price.

The book is an up and down ride of emotion that tests Kit Colbana to the core. She is an assassin, but this time around she must use her skills to figure out a mystery rather than track someone down or kill them. Will she succeed, or will her failure result in Damon being put to death– the ultimate consequence?
