An American author, the writer J.D. Rhoades has been writing for a long-time now and is a firm fixture on the literary scene. Largely focusing on fiction of the mystery and thriller variety, along with elements of romance too, he’s an extremely versatile and interesting author. Falling into the sub-genre of ‘Redneck noir’, he’s seen as one of the leading figures within this specific field, creating a highly distinctive and creative backlog of work.
Influenced by such luminaries as Hunter S Thompson and Elmore Leonard, he was to have a strong and well defined presence all of his own. Knowing and understanding his genre well, he has given it a voice, taking it in new and exciting directions that were previously unseen. Distinctive as he is unique, Rhoades is a highly versatile author, and one that has a global following, despite his books looking a very specific take on Americana.
Early and Personal Life
Born and raised in North Carolina, America, the author to be J.D. Rhoades was very much of his time and country, as his books would inject a serious sense of Americana into them. Growing up and immersing himself in this culture, he would harbor a passion for both reading and writing from a very early age as well. Taking inspiration from his environment he’d put it back into his work, creating a more rounded and versatile voice.
Educating himself on the subject he’d be constantly reading and writing as well, continually honing and refining his skills. This would provide him with the foundation he required to take his writing career forwards later on in life. Not only that, but it would also allow him to gain the tools necessary for building a more professional understanding of the craft.
Before becoming a writer full-time he’d work at building upon his experiences as well, giving his books a greater sense of grounding in the process. Working as an attorney too, something which he still continues to do, he managed to gain a unique first-hand perspective into the law. This is something that has allowed him to give his novels an even more refined sense of realism as well.
Still writing to this very day, he continues on with the craft from his home in Carthage, North Carolina, in the United States. Always looking for his next big idea, he’s likes to immerse himself in the more mythical aspects of America and American culture. This is something that’s expected to continue for some years to come, as there’s plenty more novels set to be released on the horizon.
Writing Career
Releasing his first novel in 2005 he made his initial debut on to the literary scene with ‘The Devil’s Right Hand’. This would also set-up his long-running and much loved ‘Jack Keller’ series of novels, featuring the eponymous bounty hunter. Establishing many of his themes and ideas that were to be recurring, it would manage to not only introduce his readers to a new character, but his writing career as a whole.
Not just known for his ‘Jack Keller’ series of novels either, Rhoades is also well regarded for his ‘Tony Wolf/Tim Buckthorn’ collection of books as well. Working as thrillers in a similar manner to the Jack Keller books, they are filled with mystery and intrigue set at an action fueled pace. They also manage to maintain recurring arcs and characters, something which his now loyal following of readers have come to appreciate.
Gaining recognition for his various contributions to the genre by both his many peers and contemporaries alike, he has become a firm fixture within the industry. Previously writing a newspaper column for the ‘Southern Pines’, his weekly ‘North Carolina Pilot’ piece won best in its division in 2005. This would allow him to build his brand name as an author and writer prior to becoming a full-time novelist over the subsequent years to follow.
Previously working as a radio news reporter before becoming a writer, Rhoades had managed to already build a profile for himself. Also working as an ad salesman, a club DJ, a television cameraman and a waiter, he would gain a lot of experience through many of his jobs. Maintaining his position as a practicing attorney, he continues to write at the same time, something which is clearly reflected within his work.
Writing from his home in Carthage in North Carolina, he also practices law, to activities which feed off one another. Knowing and understanding his genre well, he is very much an author of his surrounding environment and times. Not showing any signs of stopping anytime soon, his writing career will carry on into the foreseeable future, as it grows from strength-to-strength.
Storm Surge
Originally published in 2010 on the 20th of March, this was to be a stand-alone novel from J.D. Rhoades. Whilst it brings in many of his previously seen themes and ideas, it works as a self contained story for readers new and old. It also works as the ideal entry point for any readers looking to get into the work of Rhoades for the first time, as it is a highly accessible and engaging read.
Sharon Brennan, a beautiful waitress, is hoping to make a living working at the luxurious ‘Pass Island’ resort, while Max Chase, the handyman, hopes to escape his past there. That’s when a storm descends upon the resort, as both Max and Sharon take cover there, all whilst a mysterious object is going to be taken during the commotion. With her daughter Glory, Sharon and Max must face a number of mercenaries hired to retrieve the object by some extremely powerful people. Will they be able to protect themselves? Can they keep the object from falling into the wrong hands? What will happen during the storm surge?
Lawyers, Guns and Money
Brought out through the ‘Amazon Digital Services, Inc.’ publishing outlet this time, this was another stand-alone title from J.D. Rhoades. Initially released on the 21st of February in 2011, it was a taut thriller with plenty of the tension and drama that readers have now come to expect from him as an author. Using many of his recurring ideas and themes, such as the practise of law, it manages to show a well developed and confident take on the genre.
Ensuring that he is always paid in advance for his defending criminal offenders, the small town criminal lawyer Andy Cole has managed to build a successful practise. That’s when Danny Fairgreen, a reluctant and law-abiding member of the Fairgreen family clan, is found to have supposedly murdered a barmaid. Taking on his case it appears that someone has attempted to frame the only good member of the family, and Cole is determined to find out who. Will he find the real culprit? Why are they attempting to put pressure on Danny and to what ends? What will happen as they all face lawyers, guns and money?
