J.F. Holmes is an American author that writes military science fiction. Holmes was a soldier before he took up the pen to write fiction.

+Biography

J.F. Holmes spent twenty-two years in the army. Considering the experience he accumulated, it was a little surprising when the author decided to write science fiction. Holmes wasn’t the first army veteran to turn to publishing.

But most former soldiers have a preference for military fiction. Holmes’ bibliography is far more wide-ranging and it features books in the fantasy and detective genres, not to mention Space Opera.

J.F. Holmes’ military career was pretty varied. He spent time in both the National Guard and the Regular army. He saw action on the field as an artillery section leader and behind the scenes with the planning staff.

He was also on the ground on September 11th when New York City was attacked. His literary career kicked off in 2010, though Holmes did not know for sure that novel writing would be in his future at the time.

The author made a bit of a name for himself with ‘PowerPoint Ranger’, a cartoon strip that made fun of life in the military.

By 2014, though, Holmes saw the rationale in dedicating his life to putting the crazy stories running around his head on paper. So he proceeded to do just that, churning out more than a dozen books and novellas over a short period of time.

J.F. Holmes spends a lot of time online, specifically on Facebook. The platform is the author’s primary marketing tool. He makes an effort to engage with his readers on a regular basis.

The author has imputed his success in the publishing field to his discipline. Holmes can have as many as four books in production at the same time without letting anyone title suffer.

The author encourages any aspiring writer to make an effort to write. As far as he’s concerned, there are no shortcuts to success in publishing.

+Invasion: Resistance

Earth has been conquered by the Invy. A decade ago, David Warren was the general in charge of preventing the worst from happening. The powers that be trusted him to keep the planet safe from a fleet of enemies.

David fought hard but he was overmatched. He could only watch as the enemy overwhelmed the earth’s forces and proceeded to bombard the planet. In the years that followed, civilization collapsed and an alien entity took its place as humanity’s new master.

Warren is still alive. He has found some solace on the farm where he lives in peace with his sister and her son. They have worked hard to steer clear of the Invy. And for years they had succeeded in doing just that.

Then two travelers ruined everything. Now Warren must decide if the planet is worth fighting for.

This is the first book in a series. The story takes place more than a decade after the Earth was conquered by an alien invader. The Combined Earth Forces were, as the name suggests, an amalgamation of every offensive and defensive power that the planet could master.

The CEF was earth’s last hope against an unstoppable foe. Warren stood at the head of a fleet of ships charged with beating the enemy back. Warren failed. He realized early on that their forces were simply overmatched.

He attempted to retreat. He urged his bosses to surrender, the idea being to save humanity from a devastating defeat. Warren was ignored. And just as he expected, the CEF fleet was decimated.

The resulting bombardment by the alien horde resulted in a multitude of deaths. Those humans that survived the assault were enslaved. Warren escaped with his life and succeeded in carving out what amounted to an ordinary existence.

Warren would rather be left alone. He doesn’t believe that there is any chance of the earth ever escaping the control of its alien conquerors, so he has discarded the notion of fighting back.

The scout team that comes knocking on Warren’s door doesn’t give him much of a choice on the matter, though. They bundle him up and take him to CEF HQ. Everyone thought the organization was destroyed.

But in truth, the CEF went underground. They have been watching, waiting and looking for a crucial opportunity to strike. That opportunity has come. Warren needs to get on board. He needs to realize that the human race has been beaten but the fight is not over.

This novel has been commended for the military knowledge that J.F. Holmes brings to bear. Though, some audiences have criticized the story for that very reason. There are places in the book where Holmes throws a little too much military jargon at readers, jargon that only military enthusiasts will understand.

+Invasion: Day of Battle

The Confederated Earth Forces were defeated a decade ago. An alien enemy swooped it, battered their ranks and bombarded the planet’s surface. The CEF should have been destroyed that day.

But the organization survived. It went underground, recuperated and made preparations to strike back. In the meantime, the alien enemy planted roots and established its control over the human population.

The invy thought the planet was conquered. They believed that humanity would simply lay low and persist in an existence of enslavement. But they were wrong. The time to fight back has come. This book looks at a unit of regular soldiers as they do their part to win the war against an unstoppable foe.

Many of the characters from the first book appear in its sequel. J.F. Holmes picks up the plots of Book 1 and continues some of them in ‘Day Battle’ while he closes others. The human race has initiated a covert mission that could change the tide of battle.

The enemy has every advantage. A direct battle would see the CEF destroyed. So they have to play it safe. They have to be cunning. They need to hit the enemy where they won’t expect.

There are a lot of pieces on the board at the same time, a lot of aspects that must go right if the good guys are to win. Holmes tries to explore Earth’s most important battle from every significant point of view.
