The author is also known for his gamebooks and outstanding computer software he has created while still engaged full time in writing. Over the years, Brennan’s writing has evolved to include a wider audience and reflect time changes. Due to this evolution, Brennan’s work has been translated to over 50 languages making it easy for his readers in different parts of the world to understand his work.
Castle of Darkness
Castle of Darkness is the first book in the Grail Quest series. This book introduces King Arthur, the ruler of a troubled kingdom. Thanks to attacks by powerful warlocks and monstrous dragons, King Arthur’s kingdom is in danger. The Round Table Knights set to protect the kingdom and ensure that evil is chased away from the land. You, on the other hand, will be involved in yet another adventure. The reader in this gamebook is expected to break into the Castle of Darkness to rescue queen Guinevere, who is in danger of Wizard Ansalom and his sorcery. The castle walls are not for the faint-hearted, and it will take skills, tact, and a little bit of luck to survive it all.
To complete the gamebook, you need a pencil, eraser, and two dice. You are required to defeat the creatures you meet along the way and avoid the deathtraps you will encounter in the Castle of Darkness. The gamebook starts with an introduction, where you also get to choose how to play the game. Whichever play you settle for, you must remember that your choice doesn’t make much of a difference as it cannot influence what is happening, and you cannot die. However, the introduction gives a background of what is happening, helps you get ready to fight, and provides spells and equipment that will come in handy later.
You can opt to start the game by fighting Mean Jake and hitting his nose. However, you do not have to win this fight to proceed. The atual adventure begins once you get to the forest that surrounds the castle. You have to be careful and watch the stables, creep slowly, and basically investigate before making any move. Rolling your dice will make it possible for you to open the secret door once you are in the castle. You will also need to write a poem, longer than ten lines, after praising Fiend’s poetry. In your adventures, you will be forced to seek allies wherever you go to avoid a fight. You will also have to use a magic wand to get past guards, make use of fireballs, and endure a few false starts before you can free the queen.
Castle of Darkness is a light-hearted read for anyone looking for an intriguing story. As a game, you will need a lot of tact to avoid the deathtraps you will barely see coming. The author incorporates a lot of humor into the story, which adds to the intrigue. With this game, you can be sure that once you start playing, there will be no stopping until you get to rescue the queen. There is enough action on every page, and, incredibly, the book ends with you as the hero after a successful rescue.
Whisperers
Whisperers in a non-fiction piece that takes you through the history of the spirit world. The author doesn’t just state historical facts, but he goes a step further to provide evidence of how the spirit world has influenced the course of human events. Since the start of civilization, humankind has had an affinity to the supernatural. Renowned leaders like Nebuchadnezzar to Hitler have made serious decisions based on supernatural encounters and beliefs. These decisions have impacted our world as it is, which is the reason why we know about them in the first place. So, are there Whisperers out there who are guiding every step we make?
Aside from taking you down memory lane, the author also examines visions and their impacts. The book is written in a documentary style, so it doesn’t feel like Brennan is trying to push his beliefs down your throat. For the most part, it reads like he is just providing information so you can make your conclusions. In the last chapters of this book, the author presents his explanations based on quantum physics, Boggle Threshold, and several religious beliefs. You will also get to see his view on the connection we have to the spirit world and how we can use this to our advantage.
From his writing, it is clear that Brennan did his homework. Instead of just making statements, he goes deeper into history and compares belief systems in different religions and even science. It is incredible how the author writes about this controversial topic and makes it palatable to a broader audience. Whether you believe we have a connection to the spirit world or not, the author does make a good point. The author doesn’t make any assumptions, making this a perfect read for a novice interested in this study area. You may disagree with Brennan’s conclusion, but he does provide a lot of solid research that you can use to get started on your investigation.
Whisperers is an intriguing book that presents a fascinating look at history. The author takes you on a journey to a time when Egyptians consulted their gods before taking any step and comparing this with contemporary views on the spirit world. Since the author did this research as part of his academic work, the story is well detailed and links the past and present. The narration is flawless, and the way Brennan argues his points makes it easy for the reader to believe everything in the story. It helps that enough evidence is provided, so this is no work of fiction. If you are into microhistories and biographies, you will love this book.
