Midnight at the Well of Souls is the first in the ‘Well of Souls’ series. It was published in 1977. The main character in this science fiction novel is Nathan Brazil. He is the owner of a cargo ship that he regularly has available for hire.
At the moment, Nathan Brazil is transporting human cargo and regular cargo between planets. When he goes off of his normal route for the purposes of answering a distress call, he has no idea that a hidden stargate is about to transport him– and his passengers– to Well World. The hidden gate has taken them to an entirely new planet.
What is the Well World? To start with, it is a very unique place, this is a master control planet for the cosmos. It was made by a race that designed the universe. They once resembled gods, but by now they are long gone. They were apparently an ancient race that either went away or died out called the Markovians. The Well World is essentially in control of 1560 worlds and it is also the gateway to these worlds, which were apparently made by the Markovians towards the end of their presence.
Confronted with unexpected entry to this planet, Nathan is embroiled in a sudden mission to find and protect the Well of Souls. Finding and wielding this power will allow whoever discovers it to control the entire cosmos, with only this simple cargo captain in between them and their evil plans. One thing is for certain, and that there are strange forces that want to take control of the Well World and the universe too using the powers of this place.
Determined to keep that power out of their hands, Nathan Brazil does what he can to set out to stop these forces from discovering the Well of Souls. Along the way, he has to deal with a number of strange things that seem to be true to this world– strange transformations of people changing into mermaids, centaurs, and giant insects.
There are many of these creatures in this land, and when it comes to his own memories of what is going on– well, there seems to be trouble recalling them. Nathan must come in between the forces that want to find the well and rule the world too. Can he do it? Pick up this book to find out.
The second book in the Well of Souls series is titled Exiles at the Well of Souls. It was published in 1978. In this novel, Antor Trellig has seized a super-computer that is so powerful it’s practically the path to godhood. This is not good as Trellig happens to run a ruthless syndicate that of course extends its reach throughout the stars.
Master criminal Mavra Chang has been offered any reward she wants by The Council if she can stop Trellig. They have also offered to give her a horrible death if she refuses or fails, so for Mavra the choice is clear. But neither of the two very different individuals counted on the Well World coming into it.
This strange world designed by the Markovians controlled and kept the cosmos in order. It can transport anyone, and when opponents are transported from across space here, they find themselves in new alien bodies. You never know what will happen on Well World. Not only that, but it seems that they have landed in the middle of a desperate battle for control of the universe. Will Chang catch Trellig before he becomes a god? Read this novel to know for sure!
