The name ‘Jack West Jr.’ refers to a series of novels written by Mathew Reilly. The name also refers to the primary protagonist of the series.
+The Story
The Jack West Jr. series has been described as a cross between Indiana Jones and Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code books. The series is a wild adventure filled with pulpy stories that are designed to temporarily thrill and enthrall.
A central aspect of the books is Jack West Jr., the protagonist of the series. Jack is the son of an Australian High School teacher and a ruthless American Colonel. At a young age, Jack joined the army. He initially had his sights set on the U.S Army but he eventually settled for the Australian Armed Forces.
And it didn’t take Jack long to prove just how effective he was at soldiering. Jack rose through the ranks, becoming a captain, joining the Special Air Service Regiment and attaining the sorts of achievements that elevated him above his father.
Upon departing from the army, attends Trinity College in Dublin. There he meets Professor Maximilian T. Epper and begins to study archeology. However, Jack’s military career is by no means over.
Over the course of the next couple of years, he has the opportunity to participate in numerous missions, this including multi-national exercises in 1990 at the US Naval seals base. It is during those years that Jack meets Marshal Judah, the man that will become his enemy.
The world that Jack West Jr. inhabits is one filled with conspiracies and mysteries of a supernatural nature. When Jack is first introduced to readers in ‘Seven Deadly Wonders’ the world is facing an apocalyptic threat.
Every 4,500 years, the earth is devastated by a cataclysmic event. This event can be stopped by finding a special item and positioning it in the right location. However, the person who achieves this feat will not only save the planet but also gain dominion over the human race for the next one thousand years.
Jack West Jr. leaps into the fray with his team not to acquire ultimate power but to prevent other nefarious forces from claiming it. His feats in the event catapult him to stardom in all the wrong places
And it isn’t long before the elite soldier is thrust into one supernaturally-themed conspiracy after another.
The Jack West Jr. series is outlandish by every standard one can measure it against. For a lot of people, the idea that Jack’s arm was burned off only to be replaced with a bionic version made from a titanium alloy is simply too ridiculous to ignore.
Others readers take offense with the way Mathew Reilly plays with history and physics. Fans of the author defend the Jack West Jr. series by saying that the books tell simple, straightforward action-packed adventure stories that can only be enjoyed by those that can check their disbelief at the door.
This defense hasn’t stopped Mathew Reilly from being ridiculed for his silly protagonists, incredulous plots and excessive use of italics and exclamation marks.
+The Author
Mathew Reilly is an Australian author that writes action thrillers. Born in 1974 to a mathematics teacher and a government worker, Mathew grew up in Willoughby near Sydney.
A student of St. Aloysius College in Sydney and the University of New South Wales where he studied law, Reilly was always writing. His first book was rejected by every publisher he approached. Undeterred, the 19-year-old decided to self-publish the book using a bank loan.
Cate Paterson from Pan Macmillan stumbled across a copy of the author’s book and saw fit to give him a book deal. Mathew’s subsequent books were written while he studied law and they quickly elicited attention from audiences in the United Kingdom and the United States, eventually going on to sell millions of copies.
Mathew Reilly stands out because of the outlandish ideas he injects into his action thrillers. In fact, the ridiculous nature of his fiction has been known to draw new fans to Mathew even while causing others to abandon his works. In that regard, Mathew’s penchant for straining credulity is his greatest strength and worst weakness.
Mathew tried his hand at writing for television. However, the pilot for his first script failed to take off and was eventually dropped by ABC.
Mathew Reilly is an unabashed fan of Hollywood blockbusters. His passion for the movies might explain his habit of collecting prop reproductions of characters, items, and elements from franchises like Star Trek and Indiana Jones.
Mathew’s passion for the Hollywood blockbuster also shows in his writing style. Mathew’s Jack West Jr. books have been praised and criticized in equal parts for reading like Michael Bay-style blockbuster movies.
+Seven Deadly Wonders
A legend has haunted certain archaeologists for a long time. According to particular records, there is a terrible solar event which is unleashed upon the earth every 4,500 years, bringing about untold destruction across the globe.
However, even though this event is a certainty, the planet can be saved from death and mayhem if the Golden Capstone can be placed on top of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Jack West Jr. is a super soldier with a mission. Jack knows of the destruction coming upon the world. Jack also knows that whoever sets the Golden Capstone on the Pyramid of Giza will not only avert disaster but also cement their dominion over the world for the next couple of centuries.
As nations rise up against one another, determined to find the capstone and attain the ultimate treasure, Jack, with the backing of a group of nations, makes it his mission to keep the frightening power out of the hands of any one country.
+The Six Sacred Stones
Jack West Jr. thought he had saved the world. But then a secret ceremony triggered a countdown that will destroy all life on earth, practically undoing all Jack’s hard work.
But all is not lost. There is an ancient machine capable of stopping the global disaster. Jack West Jr. just has to find the clues necessary to locating and rebuilding the machine. The answers to Jack’s questions are found in Six Sacred Stones that Jack must locate before a nefarious force stops him and his team.
