It was then that he opened his own private practice in Sacramento, California. James would eventually give up his career in veterinary medicine to become a full-time author; however, to this day he still volunteers his abilities to help the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and spaying and neutering trapped feral cats for the Sacramento Council of Cats. James currently resides in Sacramento, California and shares his home with his golden retriever, Penny, and his miniature dachshund, Paiwakit.
Although his first novel was released clear back in the year 1999, James does not consider writing as his career. In an interview with St. Louis Magazine in 2012, He describes himself as a veterinarian who occasionally writes novels.
His Inspiration
James was inspired by many different authors such as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. He was also inspired by his many travels and adventures through the United States, Europe, New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, as well as in South America.
Conquering the globe has not been the only inspiration for this writer, however. James was also self-inspired by the tall tale stories he would use as pranks on his siblings. He enjoyed, and still does to this day, making his fictional stories believable by adding some truth to sway the minds of his readers.
The Banned and the Banished
With over thirty titles translated in over forty different languages, it is no wonder how this author has become so well-known world-wide. James’s first novel, Wit’ch Fire, was written in 1999 under the pen name James Clemens. Book one of the Banned and the Banished series, Wit’ch Fire tells the story of Elena who is trying to save the lost empire of Alasea from the Dark Lord.
Critic reviews include: “ I couldn’t put it down ” (R.A. Salvatore) and “ I loved every page.” (John Saul) The Banned and the Banished series includes four more novels. The second, Wit’ch Storm, was released in May of 2000 and continues Elena’s quest against the Dark Lord leading her to a lost city that holds the key to the Dark Lord’s defeat.
In Wit’ch War, released in July 2001, Elena has now mastered the energies of blood magick and the fate of her kingdom rests on her recovering the Blood Diary. Book four, Wit’ch Gate was released in October of 2002. In this novel, Elena must journey to Gulgotha to uncover the Dark Lord’s secret identity.
The last novel in this series, Wit’ch Star, was released in November of 2003. In this final chapter, Elena must with her companions to find and destroy the last deadly Weirgate and defeat the Dark Lord.
Stand Alone Novels
One title several people are familiar with is his novel Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Released in May of 2008, this novel was based on the fourth of the Indiana Jones films by George Lucas and Jeff Nathanson. This adventure takes place in the Cold War times of 1957.
Raider, Indiana Jones is forced to help the menacing Reds retrieve the Crystal Skull which leads to him losing his job as a teacher. His retirement is short-lived after one of his colleagues is kidnapped. Indiana then has to embark on a dangerous rescue mission through the Amazon jungle.
Sigma Force
Sigma Guide, the informative novel of the Sigma series was released in June of 2012. This chapter of the seven chapter series is a detailed journal describing all that is Sigma. Eight years prior to its release, Sand Storm, released in July of 2004, was the first novel of the Sigma series to be published.
In this chapter, Painter Crowe, an agent for Sigma Force must embark on a perilous race to find the source of power that caused the explosion in the British Museum in London. In Map of Bones, released in July of 2005, the Sigma force must retrieve the preserved bones of the Three Magi stolen by a band of alchemists and assassins attempting to use them to alter the future of mankind.
In July of 2006 James released Black Order, Sigma has to figure out why Buddhist monks inexplicably revert to cannibalism. In The Judas Strain, released in July of 2007, Dr. Lisa Cummings and Monk Kokkalis are aboard a cruise liner hijacked by terrorists. The Last Oracle, released in July of 2008, tells the story of two men in a race against time to solve a mystery based on the Greek Oracle of Delphi.
In The Doomsday Key, released in June of 2009, Sigma comes up against the deadly ancient artifact known as the Doomsday Key. In The Devil Colony, released in June of 2011, Sigma faces controversy with a local Native American tribe who lay claim on ancient mummified bodies and artifacts deep in the Rocky Mountains. Bloodline, released in March of 2013, tells the story of how Sigma rescues a pregnant American woman from Somali pirates in the jungles of coastal Africa after her yacht was hijacked.
His most recent novel, The Eye of God, is the ninth novel in the Sigma Force Collection. Released in June of 2013, The Eye of God, is an apocalyptic story where Sigma, Commander Gray Pierce, and Vatican historians must save the world by finding a weapon hidden in the lost tomb of Genghis Khan that holds the fate of humanity.
This attention-grabbing novel has gained such critic review as “ Adventurous and enormously engrossing” (Alan Cheuse; New York Times) and “ After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man” (Huffington Post)
His Contributions
James is responsible for starting the Authors United for Veterans, which is a nonprofit organization of best selling authors dedicated to raising funds for U.S.A. Cares. This program helps soldiers and their families with job placement, housing assistance and emergency aid.
