Jane Porter is an American novelist popular for her series of women’s fiction and romance novels and novellas. Born in the small town of Visalia, California, Porter asserts that she is a small town girl. Having grown up in a small town she has grown to love the miles of farmland, oak trees, and Central Californian golden foothills. For this author, nothing beats the piquant scent of orange blossoms on a humid summer night. As a little girl she would spend hours on her bed staring out of her window, dreaming of the princes, princesses, and handsome knights in faraway lands. Never the nerdy bookworm student, Porter had a very vivid imagination from a young age. She usually saw herself more as a Joan of Arc crusader, a magical fairy, or a princess.

While her schooling would require her to put on her geek costume from time to time, a trip to Europe, which completely changed Porters perspective. When she was 13, her parents took the whole family to Europe for a yearlong vacation. It was in Europe that Jane Porter was exposed to a wide range of customs and cultures that would change her career path forever. Everything about Europe just seemed to be what she was looking for. Italy was one culture that she really took to, particularly its gorgeous and passionate men. It is no wonder that the protagonist in her very first novel was an Italian man.

The years in Europe would set the tone for the following years as the travel bug suddenly bit Porter. Most of her college and even high school years were spent studying in Ireland, Japan, and South Africa. South Africa became one of her favorite countries, particularly it politics complex, the land, the people, and the heart wrenching stories. After studying and traveling all over the world for a few years, she finally had to earn a living and settle down. She went on to work as a director of a nonprofit organization and in sales and marketing. She enrolled for an American Studies Bachelors from UCLA that focused on American history and American literature. She went on to get her Masters in Writing from the University of San Francisco and later went on to teach high school and Jr. high School English.

After living in the Greater Seattle area and Hawaii for about 16 years, Jane Porter moved back to California. She now lives in the grand Ole Hanson home in San Clemente with her three sons and her surfer husband. She is a writer for all seasons and asserts that she does not mind a rainy day as it gives her an opportunity to write fascinating stories about people in faraway mystical lands, and most important of love. Living in California means she gets to walk everywhere and go to the beach whenever she feels like it.

Jane Porter says that most of her novels are about love, the need to be loved since she has a penchant for a story with a happy ending, which love almost always provides. For Porter, love and family are very important components of life, which is why she writes women’s fiction and romance. Moreover, having grown up in a family with some very strong willed women, she always tends to portray her childhood heroes in her novels. While she has been a huge success as a fiction and romance writer, she asserts that some friends still find it baffling that she retains the same ambition and vigor in writing a good story that she had before her success. With over 50 women’s fiction titles and romances, she has been a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author several times. She won the Novella Category of the RITA awards for her novella Take Me, Cowboy after being nominated for the award five times. In 2006, one of her most popular novels, Flirting with Forty, was named Red Hot Summer Read by Redbook Magazine, before it was adapted into a movie by the same name in 2008 starring Heather Locklear.

One of the most popular novels by Jane Porter is the first book of the Brennan Sisters series, The Good Woman. Meg Brennan Roberts is a loving mother, faithful wife, and successful publicist that has a knack for making the correct decision in a variety of situations. After years of putting out many fires in her domestic and professional life, Meg increasingly feels empty. The feeling is greater at home where her husband is always distant and disconnected from her, than he has ever been. Disheartened and lonely, she accompanies Chad Hallahan, her ruggedly handsome boss to the London Wine Fair. Alone in an interesting city, Chad comes out and confesses that he has always had a desire for the beautiful Meg. Desperately confused, flattered and overwhelmed, she goes back home, but she now starts second guessing every decision she ever made. Leaving behind her marital responsibilities is seemingly reckless and is certain to have irreversible consequences. Nonetheless, the idea of getting out of her dead end marriage seems so liberating. Now Meg must decide if what the essence of being a woman as proscribed by society is worth abandoning her pursuit of becoming the woman she believes she could be.

Another highly popular novel by Jane Porter is, The Good Daughter, the second novel of the Brennan Sisters series. The novel portrays Kit Brennan, a school English teacher that has made sound yet largely unsatisfying decisions for the past seventeen years. With her fortieth birthday coming up, she starts considering options that had never before been on her plate. For instance, she thinks she may just skip the love and marriage part, and instead get a child and raise it herself. A girl’s weekend offers the perfect opportunity for Kit to get away from Mr. Wrongs and the school, and make some life-changing decisions. She meets just the man she needs; he is dangerous and challenges her to be what she could be. She wants to test the waters if only just this once, but a call from a student in crisis threatens to spoil everything. Should she give in to her desires or succumb yet again to family burdens that have weighed her down for so long. Whatever decision she makes may have potentially life changing implications.
