About Janet Evanovich:

The world of literature has amateurs and professionals all striving towards one goal; creating bestsellers. As fate would have it only a certain number of authors are able to make an outstanding name for themselves. Getting to be a top notch writer is a feat in itself just like creating memorable stories is. Janet Evanovich stands out as one of the best authors in the genre of romance, mystery and suspense literature. Also known by the pen name, Steffie Hall, she has been filling bookstores with her novels since 1987.

Life and times of Evanovich

Evanovich, whose middle name is Schneider was born in April 22, 1943 in South River, New Jersey. This is the place she spent her early days, growing up. She attended South River High School and later proceeded to Douglass College. Born to a machinist father and a mother who was a housewife, Evanovich happened to be the first in her family to attend college. Evanovich pursued a degree in art from the college which was part of Rutgers University in New Jersey.

She graduated in 1965. A year before that, she married her husband Peter Evanovich and they settled in New Hampshire. They have two children, a son and a daughter. When Janet Evanovich became a mother, she saw it fit to become a housewife and raise her children up by herself. When she hit the thirties, she began the journey of writing novels. In a bid to learn how to better her writing of dialog, she took lessons in improvisational acting. Her first task saw her spend many years trying to write the Great American novel.

Her efforts seemed futile when she was unable to make sales for the three manuscripts she had managed to complete. Ten years after she began writing, she decided to change her genre into writing romance. She finally got a hold of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow when her second romance novel attracted a publisher. She sold the manuscript for $2000 which she considered a whooping amount. Thereafter, she began establishing herself as a prolific author and luckily success was on her side.

The literary works of Janet Evanovich

Over forty novels have been written and published by Evanovich. She has also been able to work collaboratively with other writers like Charlotte Hughes, Stephen J. Cannell and Lee Goldberg. Her debut novel, Hero at Large, got published in 1987 under her pseudo-name Steffie Hall. In 1988, she landed a deal with Bantam Loveswept publishing house. For the subsequent five years, she began writing romance novels for Bantam under her real name.

This experience was beneficial to Evanovich because she learnt how to create characters that the reader would love and identify with. She stamped her identity in writing with her style that featured humor amidst the dominant romantic theme. Over the course of time, it dawned on Evanovich that she enjoyed writing the action-packed scenes in her novels rather than the sentimental, intimate sequences. By the time she completed writing her twelfth novel, she made up her mind to shift focus to romantic adventure novels. This was the beginning of a total shift in the style of writing for Evanovich. Her new novels would incorporate the format of first person narrative.

Moreover, her stories would feature a central character and the rest of the characters would revolve around this one prominent character. The new novels would also portray heroes and heroines and carry a family spirit; a sense of community in the style of writing. The first novel in her new category of romance adventure is One for the Money, published in 1994. This book introduced the heroine Evanovich had chosen for her next series of novels.

Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter became a household name among Evanovich’s novels. The series which has over twenty books gradually became a hit. The sixth book in the series, Hot Six, clinched the number one spot in the New York Times Best Seller list. This was her first book to win such an accolade. From that moment onwards, all the subsequent books in the series made it to the number one spot. The novel One for the Money, earned Janet Evanovich $1 million when Columbia Tristar bought the movie rights to this book.

Apart from the eight single romance novels she wrote as Steffie Hall, she has a large collection of novels under the following series;- Elsie Hawkins series Stephanie Plum series Wicked series The Barnaby series Full series with Charlotte Hughes Hot series with Leanne Banks O’Hare and Fox series with Lee Goldberg One for the Money is indeed the ultimate romance adventure novel. It introduces Stephanie Plum who happens to be a lingerie salesperson in dire need of a job.

She seeks for a filing job with a bail bondsman, Vinnie who happens to be her cousin. The job turns out to be taken but she is advised to apprehend a number of clients who have proved unreliable in settling their bonds. She agrees to this just because she is in a financial quagmire and the job would earn her some commission. Her first task is to find Joe Morelli who also happens to be her former sexual acquaintance.

The mystery adventure picks up when during her job activities, Stephanie crosses the path of a boxer linked with the murders of several women. The second book in this hit series is Two for the Dough. Stephanie Plum is still learning the ropes on being a bounty hunter. Therefore, her boss Vinnie brings her to the task on a manageable case; apprehending Kenny Mancuso cousin to Joe Morelli. The boy Kenny, allegedly shot his best friend on the knee then jumped bail.

While on this quest, Stephanie meets Spiro Stiva whose father owns a local funeral home. He asks her to help him find some basement caskets and body parts that have gone missing. As she progresses with her investigations, Stephanie begins getting threats and pieces of embalmed bodies in her apartment.

The height of it all is when Stephanie and her grandma are locked up in the the basement hall of the funeral home owned by the Stivas. Janet Evanovich builds up the sterling performance of Stephanie Plum as the consistent heroine in the subsequent books in the series.

I’ve read or listened to almost all of your books. I hope you continue the Moon and knight series. I was pulled into the characters and want to see where they all end up.

I love the Stephanie Plum series. I laugh out loud throughout. But I’m getting to the end of the series. Where do I go for a similar series and characters? Lizzy and Diesel and the Wicked series and Fox and O’Hara did not compare for me. Is that all there is?

In 2006 I ran an office of 15 women and told them about the Number series,
I had all that was out then and passed them around, we picked the current actors at the time ieThe Rock was voted to be Ranger, The lady from “where’s the beef” commercial was voted to be Grannie, etc, We all thought the books would make amazing movies. I even had my husband reading the books as I would be reading and laugh out loud at some of the antics and he wanted to know why, I told him to read the books.
I personally thought the movies was great and have watched several times, It always makes me feel better, especially when Stephanie takes in Morrelli,
    and the cupcake ending.
We all were hoping for more.

My daughter in law got me hooked on Stephanie Plum. I have read all 28 plus the in between and Diesel and Lizzie. There are no more books for me. I don’t know what I’m going to read next. I really like the little bit of magic and mystery and especially the humor of he .

I wondered why Lee Goldberg and you stopped writing the KateO’hare and Nicholas Fox series together? I really enjoyed your writing styles together. I felt the change in characters with the other writers. They were still enjoyable to read however I felt the characters were portrayed differently. Thank you for all your wonderful reads Janet.

Yes, the characters personalities changed without Lee Goldberg’s influence, and the playfulness between Kate and Nick disappeared. We would love to see more Fox and O’Hare books with Lee collaborating. Also missed Kates family and the team they used. Bring back the fun!

Couldn’t agree more about the actor choices for the movie. My dream cast list would have been Sandra Bullock or Marisa Tomei as Stephanie Plum, Antonio Banderas as Ranger, Estelle Getty as Grandma, Matt Dillon or Keannu Reeves as Morelli, Queen Latifah as Lula, Danny de Vito or Joe Pesci as Vinnie

I agree with the actor choices as well!
I think Marissa Tomei for sure!!! Antonio would absolutely make a great ranger! What I find historical is, as I was reading the story I could hear DeVito talking in my head for Vinnie’s character!!
God Bless.Estelle, a Grandma Mazur for sure. Queen Latifa maybe or, haha, Martin Lawrence as big Momma lol, jk
Joe now that’s a tricky one. It would have to be someone smokin, muscled, looking good in his white tshirt, with Italian wavy hair cut short. I love Keanu but maybe he’s not ‘Italian’ enough. The same with Matt, he’s easy on the eyes but still has a kid-like face. Jury out on this one I suppose.
It’s fun to put my 2 cents in. I’m just happy that others felt the same about the movie. The book was great and the movie didn’t do it justice.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Stephanie Plum series. Was very dissapointed in the movie (the cast of characters was all wrong) I would absolutely LOVE to see it in a tv series in any shape or form, but with the right people playing our beloved characters. How about it Janet?
