The American author Jasmine Warga is an author of contemporary fiction who has been making a considerable impact within the field of Young Adult literature for quite some time, all thanks to her highly unique voice and interesting alternative take upon the genre, as she speaks to a young audience of readers worldwide, giving them characters and situations that they can easily relate to, with the stories and their inhabitants resonating long after the novels have finished. This is something that many critics have also taken to, as she has managed to come a long way in a relatively short amount of time, creating a style and a tone that is entirely unique to her. Coming from Cincinnati in Ohio she is very much an author of her background and location, which isn’t to say that her themes aren’t universal, as they are, with the stories themselves resonating with readers both young and old on a global scale. Breaking taboos, she is not afraid to shy away from certain subjects as well, something which her young readers have come to respect, as they don’t feel condescended or talked down to through her writing. Creating realistic characters with unique, but easy to relate to, outlooks on the world she manages to draw in the reader through her well researched and in-depth portrayals of subjects such as modern relationships and young love, as her readers see themselves in the characters and the situations that they are all going through as well. This is also juxtaposed with harder subject matter, such as that of suicide, something which she dealt with in her first novel, allowing her to approach a range of subjects that aren’t usually broached within the field of Young Adult novels. Knowing and understanding her audience, she also manages to speak in her voice with a sense of passion and conviction that really shines through on the page. Dedicated to her craft and the artistry of her prose, she really elevates the genre to another level, allowing it to truly come alive in the process, something which will ensure she continues to remain a mainstay on the literary scene for quite some time.
Early and Personal Life
Born in the United State in Cincinnati, Ohio, she would harness a strong passion for both reading and writing from a very young age, as she would continue to nurture it throughout her life. This would then continue throughout her education as well, as she would carry on learning and progressing as a writer throughout her life, constantly developing her style. Over time she would also gain a number of experiences, all of which she would put back into her writing, allowing it to really come alive off the page in the process.
With a host of interests that fuel her and her writing, she is also a lover of music and new experiences, all of which allow her to write in the inspired manner that she does. Still living in Cincinnati, Ohio, she is very much a novelist of her environment, taking in ideas and inspiration from the world around her, then makes them accessible to a worldwide audience. There are still plenty more books and ideas that she has planned for release in the future, as she doesn’t seem to finishing writing stories anytime soon.
Writing Career
It was in 2015 that the HarperCollins publishing label would bring out her first book, allowing her to make a name for herself respectively as a writer. Whilst not being a part of any series either she would write stand-alone titles with self-contained stories that really spoke for themselves, giving the reader a clear narrative straight through. Her characters are typically young and coming-of-age as they’re trying to find their way in the world and attempt to make sense of it all.
Attracting the attention of reviewers and other writers alike, she has come to be one of the most respected authors currently working within her field to date. Amassing readers from all over the world, she has been garnering a lot of positive attention marking her out as one to definitely watch in the years to come. Showing no signs of stopping, she will carry on bringing out books at a regular pace, whilst simultaneously maintaining a strong presence both online and off, something that shall continue for a long time yet.
My Heart and Other Black Holes
This was the first novel to come from Jasmine Warga, as it introduced her as an author to the world for the first time, setting up her overall writing career. Released through the HarperCollins publishing imprint, it was first brought out in 2015 on the 10th of February, giving a stand-alone story in the process. With a number of the ideas that she would come to be known for, it managed to bring her into the limelight as an author, giving readers a clear idea of what to expect in the years to follow.
With a mother who has difficulty looking at her and a father who was convicted of violent crime, one which shook their entire small town, sixteen year old Aysel is overcome with the feeling that she wants to take her own life. Obsessed with physics she’s consumed with the idea of transforming her energy into nothing, an obsession which finds her looking at the online suicide forum ‘Suicide Partners’, as she finds Roman going under the username ‘FrozenRobot’. Both her and Roman then share a bond despite their differences, as she comes to learn that maybe she and him could share their energy together. Can she convince him though? Will they go through with it? ‘What’, Aysel asks, ‘will become of my heart and other black holes’?
