A writer of contemporary Young Adult novels with a witty and humorous slant, the American author Jennifer Brown is well regarded for her unique take on the format, as she speaks to her young readers in a way that is easy and simple to relate to, whilst simultaneously not short-changing them on deeper issues, such as those involved in growing up, as she has a gift not only for wit, but brevity and substance as well. All of this has lead to her becoming one of the most prolific authors currently working at this present date, as she has already built a name for herself writing various columns, namely that of her weekly column in ‘The Kansas City Star’ which offered a great showcase for her talents for comedy and humor. Now producing novels full-time though, she has been able to amass a large following of fans worldwide, all thanks to the manner in which she relates her many themes and ideas on a universal level, giving them a somewhat timeless quality in the process. Winning awards for her efforts in recent years too, it is not only the general public that have warmed to her work, as she has begun garnering the acclaim and the applause of both her many peers and contemporaries alike. This has allowed her to become one of the most prolific authors currently working within her field to date, as more and more are continuing to discover her work every day, something which will continue for many years to come. It is also her use of character that really works too, as it offsets what is happening in her rich and intricate narratives, as they compliment each other throughout her novels. With a lot more books set to follow in the future as well, it looks like she’s all set to continue for plenty of time to come.
Early and Personal Life
The future author to be Jennifer Brown always had a good sense-of-humor ever since she was a young child, something which she would continue to nurture throughout the years to follow. Over time she would start putting this into her writing, as she would constantly be found with her head in a book, always looking for new ideas to write about as well. This would, in time, allow her to become the writer that she currently is today, something which she would carry on developing throughout her education, whereby she would hone and refine her skills.
Constantly writing, she would continue to refine her voice as an author prior to becoming a full-time writer, something which has helped provide her with the highly unique and succinct voice that she currently has today. It would also allow her to build her brand as an author, as many would come to discover her work in time, as she would work at building a sizable and impressive audience. Now currently living in Kansas CIty in the Missouri area, she resides with her husband and their three children, as she continues to write to this present day.
Writing Career
Bringing out her first book in 2009, Jennifer Brown would make her initial big debut with the title ‘Hate List’, which would also be the first in her first series of the same name. Other series that she would come to write would be the ‘Nikki Kill’ series, the ‘Pennybacker School’ series and the ‘Shade Me’ series, along with a collection of stand-alone novels too. All of this would lead to her receiving a number of awards for her various efforts, including the ‘ALA Best Book for Young Adults’ which she would gain for her first initial release.
Going on to win a number of other awards as well, she would receive such prizes as the 2011 Arkansas Teen Book Award and the YALSA Popular Paperback in 2012. All this would lead to her becoming one of the most prolific authors currently working within her industry, something which was progressed from her time spent working at ‘The Kansas City Star’ for over four years. With a lot more to come yet it appears that she isn’t stopping anytime soon, as she carries on into the future for some time to come yet with a lot more titles planned soon.
Hate List
First brought out through the ‘Little, Brown Books for Young Readers’ label, this was the debut novel from Jennifer Brown. It would also set-up the ‘Hate List’ series of novels. Establishing the style and tone, it is somewhat of a hard-hitting first novel, but nonetheless impressive for both its ambition and scope.
Dealing with the aftermath of a school shooting, this looks into what occurs in the wake of such a tragedy, as seen through the eyes of leading protagonist Valerie Leftman. Stopping the shooter, her then boyfriend Nick, after he opened fire in the school cafeteria, she inadvertently came to save the life of a classmate, saving them from certain death. Six months later and she must return to school, as she feels she must make amends, especially after a ‘hate list’ was found by police containing the names of the school’s most hated, which was created by both her and Nick. Will she ever feel that she can make amends? How culpable was she? Just who is guilty of the hate list?
Thousand Words
Initially released in 2013, this was once again released through the ‘Little, Brown Books for Young Readers’ publishing house. Working as a stand-alone title it is not a part of any other series. Showing a sense of progression from her earlier work, it is a must for any fans of the author.
Ashleigh is most worried about her boyfriend Kaleb as he’s heading off to college, as she’s nervous that he may be lead astray by certain temptations whilst there. In order to circumvent this, though, she decides to take a picture of herself in her swimsuit, one that’s slightly risque, so as to keep him from temptation whilst there. After texting it to him though, she soon finds the both of them facing a bad breakup, something which leads to him sharing the photo with the entirety of his baseball team. How will she come back from this? Can she ever get her revenge? Does a picture really say a thousand words?
